Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.

I agree. In America, we only allow chicken, duck, turkey, squab, crab, lobster, mussels, oysters, clams, prawns, pheasant, lamb, beef and pork to grace our dinner table. We neglect to allow the rest of the animal kingdom their place alongside our mashed potatoes. I can only imagine the deep sense of abandonment and rejection these poor creatures must feel

Kent State?

The Belmont was yesterday and they got Kent State? PETA needs to fire their agent, man. They'll never attention whore in the big leagues if they don't get exposure.

The difference between PETA and true animal lovers, is that PETA doesn't really love animals, they love their cause.

The human being who are caring for this animal which was born and raised in captivity are morally superior to those who would turn it out to fend for itself in an environment which it does not understand?

Or...

Those who would turn this magnificent animal loose in its natural environment to live as it was intended to live are morally superior to the cruel monsters who keep it in unnatural captivity?

Just more proof that PETA doesn't actually know anything about animal behavior. A golden eagle that is frightened would be totally impossible to control. It would freak out and try to flee, or bite its handler.

If the people rehabilitating the animal (who are, you know, experts) believe that the animal is okay with it, then you should believe them.

PETA makes me sad.

I've talked to a few PETA supporters, and it's crazy. They love animals SO DAMN MUCH, they honestly care more about animal suffering than human suffering. It's not like they'd come right out and say it, but I get the feeling that some of them think a little genocide never hurt anyone.

Yeah they sadly took four lives while this left the door open for Ohio State students to riot. My mother was at music practice at Hughes Hall that evening and they had to cut practice short because of the riots. I don't think its too soon for the Ohio National Guard to take care of hippies and PETA people getting rid of the last vestiages of Ohio hippism. I mean Antioch College closed down this year.

It's nice when they show hot chicks doing strange shiat though. I like that part.

I've often said that humanity has spent the last million or so years working its way to the top of the food chain, so we should eat everything we can before the dolphins take over.

Clearly, all animals should live in the wild as nature intended.

So, I assume PETA members, (as bipedal primates belonging to the mammalian species Homo sapiens) will all abandon their homes and vehicles and go back into the wild and live in accord with Mother Nature's plans as we did 130,00 years ago.

It's been my experience that raptors are okay with meeting people, provided their handlers are there and ready to put the little hoods on if the bird becomes nervous or the crowd gets rowdy. Busch Gardens partners with raptor-rehabilitation and captivity-born raptor programs, for example, and it's kind of cool to see an eagle or falcon in person.

The handler I met there was very nice. She cheerfully explained to my little cousins why it wasn't safe to pet the eagle when they asked and suggested they take a picture instead with the flash off. She was happy to hold her gloved hand in place while we posed the kids about ten feet away so that false-perspective put the eagle on their shoulders -even said it was a good idea and she'd suggest it to others. Every question our three ten-year-olds had for her, she answered, and quite a few from my fiance and I. She even threw a thawed baby mouse so the triplets could see the eagle catch and eat it.

The eagle herself seemed perfectly okay with the attention, and she preened a bit when we remarked what a beautiful eagle she was, sort of like a giant deadly parakeet might respond to 'pretty birdie.' My cousins were enchanted and have since refused to shut up about the experience; writing papers for school about eagles, decorating their room with bird pictures and reading a ridiculous number of books about raptors in general. For their birthday we've planned to sponsor three endangered birds in their names, hopefully an eagle, a peregrine falcon and a snowy owl. There's an aviary we're in touch with where the triplets can go visit 'their birds' every so often, which should make for several nice outings. (Of course, my aunt and uncle are ready to kill us for starting the raptor fad and may not be interested in farming them out to us again...)

If PETA really liked animals, they wouldn't get in the way of programs that ultimately result in more attention, education, funding and interest going the animals' way. The eagle encounter I witnessed resulted in a set of ten-year-olds that can not only spell 'ornithologist,' but who have given up Slurpees and bubble gum altogether in favor of World Wildlife Fund donations and books on zoology.

PETA's clearly jealous of the attention.
