Bah.

Just put a couple of snipers in random locations. Someone whipping out a can of spray paint on an overpass or other "public" surface gets a bullet through the knee or calf.

Then they won't be able to run away.

Here in NY you gotta show ID to buy spray paint, any glue stronger than Elmer's, and Sudafed. Probably some other things, too. It's annoying as hell.

In Chicago you can't buy spray paint at allunless you're a licensed contractor. Poor taggers have to make trips to the 'burbs.

True. All the kids I know that still write cross the river into Jersey to rack paint.

This is news, submitter? I thought stores had been keeping spray paint under lock and key for a long time.

Oh noes, I have to go TWO MILES out of my way to get paint, I guess I won't go tagging today.

Oh, whatever. The worst graffiti that I see in Saint Louis is "4 give yo self" painted in huge pink letters on an abandoned warehouse while I'm on the highway.

Cops enforce the law not make them. Don't like it? Stop voting in these idiot legislators. If you made weed legal tomorrow, for example, the cops would be happier than anyone to not have to risk their lives for a harmless plant.

Term limits FTW.

mostly white men? Not in my area, and certainly not in So Cal.

Why leave that much to chance? A bullet could miss the knee, tearing up valuable concrete and wasting ammunition.

Allow me to suggest a refinement: same idea -- random snipers in areas that attract "artists" -- and then we load with tranquilizer rounds. That way you can aim for center mass. And it will usually be non-lethal.

signaljammer 2008-06-08 12:26:30 PM
I don't get this obsession with tagging. If its territorial gang signs, like one finds on the occasionally for a day on garage doors around here, its bad because its in furtherance of a broader crime. Otherwise, I am all for a 'people's art.' Why an aesthetic preference for blank concrete?

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-06-08 12:26:37 PM
Baringer maintains that the best way to stop them is to enact legislation that will basically treat spray paint and markers like weapons: restricting who can buy them, requiring buyers to show ID, and introducing a new criminal penalty for illegal possession.

Because that idea worked SO well in the war on drugs.....

Sudlow 2008-06-08 12:26:47 PM
FTFA:" "After doing some research into the world of graffiti, Baringer learned that the ornate, multicolored art is known as tagging and that its renegade practitioners tend to be 18- to 25-year-old white men."

Also FTFA:"Baringer arms herself with statistics and anecdotes to prove that there's an escalating graffiti menace,"

The writing in the article seems to be just enough over-the-top to make me think the writer wants to poke a little fun at Baringer.

Or the subway to far rockaway and a walk over to Nassau, but yeah stupid laws to give legislators something to do.

No, they would, by and large, be pissed that you took away 60% of their workload, and they get laid off in record numbers.

Already do this in California.

Not really, even with more and more laws the numbers of police on the street are declining.

That's ok, we'll just use federal troops to fill out law enforcement shifts! I mean really, what could possibly go wrong? It's For The Children and we Want To Be Safe, right?

Sounds like here in California. A friend of mine was recently carded at a walmart for the paint brush that you would use on models and he didn't even have any paint.Aand he is in his thirties. I think the clerk didn't know the rules so decided to be safe but it is for huffing prevention if I remember right.People have needed I.D. for spray paint or modeling paint also here for at least the last five years. It doesn't seem to prevent any thing at all just like prohibition of any sort. no I am not saying asking for id is a form of prohibition.

If you've got a privately owned/operated prison system then it's a GREAT idea. More people in the system, the greater the overhead.

same thing in NJ. had to type in the IDs when I worked at Home Depot. I was told it was to cut down on teenagers getting high of the stuff. I dunno. I just typed in fake ID numbers cause it got to be so annoying.

This is old news here in California...

In fact, my youngest brother is currently facing charges of posession of a spray-can by a minor, felony vandalism, etc. He was 17 when he did it...now he's 18. Gonna be an interesting court case.

The Angry Hand of God 2008-06-08 12:39:01 PM
When I was younger one of those asshats tagged my moving van when I was moving between apartments in Atlanta. The worst part about it was I worked with the idiot who did it. When I told him he owed me $100 for the deposit on the van, he laughed. That led to him getting a black eye and me taking the money right out of his wallet. (Those kids ALWAYS have money)

Anyway, I don't even mind grafitti so much when someone is actually painting something that requires talent. Those taggers who just give themselves a cute little nickname and write it on everything they can find can kiss my ass.

/rant off.

ahhhh, I love this country of ours so very much.

anyways
if they are all 18-25 years old what the hell is the point
of checking ID? no really, can some one tell me.

"yes officer, I did just recently buy 15 cans of spray paint.
tagging? of course not, however, all 15 cans mysteriously dissapeared out of my shed last night"

obvious lie but what are they going to do, give a citation for not securely storing your paint?

and whos idea was it to make the walls all one color anyways?
if they were plaid then no one would bother.

/needs a citation for bad spelling

I think laws like this are counter productive. Darwin is a busy boy and a little help is probably appreciated. Let the huffers buy all the paint they want. The sooner they're dead, the sooner the shallow end of the gene pool is cleared out.

Well, sure... I mean, why vote in the same old idiots when there are all new idiots waiting in the wings.

I move that we get as many Farkers to run for city council in as many cities as possible. It'd be like the Mets getting rick-rolled, only more productive. Trolls can run, too, but they'll have to answer to the people for all their outrageous posts.

/ Can I get a second?
