He did what he had to do... The court is no place for a cell phone and the obvious cover-up of the perp in this case made everyone complicit in this most heinous crime! Jail 'em!

If I were God, I would appoint this judge as Vice God, for security reasons.

skwerl 2008-06-08 10:19:19 AM
Almost as bad as the asshole judge Sloop here in Seminole County, he finally got thrown off the bench as well. A bunch of people came to court and went to the wrong courtroom because their summons were incorrect. He held them all in contempt anyway and had them all thrown in jail. Farking asshole.

skinink 2008-06-08 10:19:42 AM

Does that arrest stay on your record? I'd be pissed if it did. The CORI here in Massachusetts records everylittle thing, and it shows everything to employers who need to do a criminal check. It even shows cases where you were found innocent, or where a settlement was reached before your case went to court, and you didn't plea guilty.

That judge is totally farked up.

FormlessOne 2008-06-08 10:20:18 AM
He should've made them answer, individually, under oath. That way, he could've jailed them for contempt with more justification (or, snagged the one asshat who thought he was not only too self-important to turn his phone off, but that he could also lie to a judge with impunity.)

matto14 2008-06-08 10:23:05 AM

What I want to know is why the person sitting behind, or beside the guy, didn't leap up and point and say, "It was him!" the moment the judge said they should all be jailed. *I* sure as hell wouldn't spend the day in jail for some asshat who doesn't know to turn off their cell phone in court.

Either that, or just let it go. Freakin' asshole.

I'd like that judge to work as an usher in the cinemas I go to.
Amazes me that some idiots leave their phones on at a movie, but court... well, I can see how that would be worse.

JAIL'EM!

I agree. If the four or five people around the perp could not turn him in, then they were either family, or chose to not comply with the judge's order to oust the perp, and because of that, all deserved to sit in jail for a few hours.

Ok, I can agree with that. But all courtrooms that I have been in (just in the town where I live) they all have BIG SIGNS that say TURN OFF CELL PHONES or NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED. What is it about these signs that people don't understand??? Same at my credit union, sign says "No hoods, no sunglasses, no hats" and "please refrain from using your cell phone while in the building". And yet, it seems like it is always the members of a particular race that CONSTANTLY break these rules.

I have to side with the judge on this one.

and the "particular race" always wants to get vocal when asked to remove hats/sunglasses or to stop talking on the cell

I'm almost certain that Terry Pratchett has an episode similar this in one of his books.

And WTF is up with the people in Atlanta bringing farking laser-pointers to the movies? What's that all about? So glad I moved away from that place!

Active celle phone jamming is forbidden

Not Passive

A lot of newer movie theaters somehow have a lot of metal in their walls... So no rings, no calls, and magically the signal comes back an inch out of the door. Too bad these old courthouses can't be changed that easily.

Or only judges of your race?

I make signage for a living, so I'm getting a kick out of this reply...

No, really. People don't read the signs on the shop door when they come in to buy signs.

/Glad they still buy them though.

bgrainger 2008-06-08 11:07:03 AM
I work in the Court system every day. I go to about 5 or 6 different Court Houses on a regular basis. Federal Court they don't even let you bring your phone in. State Court's ALL have BIG signs about turning them OFF, not put them on vibrate, TURN THEM OFF. So the dude that had it on is douche of the highest order.

Now as for the Judge, he went about it the wrong way. If he felt he needed to find the perp he should have questioned each person individually to see if they were the perp or knew who it was. If the phone just went off once and that was it he overreacted. If was going off several times during session he has to put a stop to it.

The only time I have ever seen a person get away with having the cell on in Court is if their wife was expecting and it was about that time.

I believe it is about following the rules no matter what color of you skin. A white person gets told to please stop talking on the cell, no problem. A black person had to get vocal. I have seen it first hand at my credit union. I am just posting what I have observed.

Every arrest stays on your record forever. Trust me. Think of it as bad information on your credit report - you can get it cleared off 2 of 3 agencies, but the third one will report back to the first two and they will reinstate it and it's a never ending loop. Even your juvenile arrests now show up - even tho they shouldn't.

You are forgetting the 5th Amendment grants rights against self incrimination. Of course, a person can be compelled to testify, but only after they are given immunity from prosecution.

I suspect this speaks of a larger problem with this judge. A general willingness to throw 45 innocent people in jail to make sure that one is punished is deplorable.

Cormophyte 2008-06-08 11:30:12 AM
It calls punishing innocent people "inexcusable."

So punishing innocent people in the name of getting the people responsible for cell phones is unacceptable, but punishing every single person who drinks almost any amount of alcohol (cause it don't take that much to hit .08, folks) and then enters their car for any purpose is?

Exactly. Cell phones might be annoying as hell, but that doesn't excuse this judge's behavior.

Not every one of those other 45 people knew whose phone it was. Most of those people who didn't fess up knew nothing. To be thrown in jail for that should be the real crime.
