Human beings have some pointy teeth and some flat grinding teeth. Human beings are omnivorous. Ignoring that to impose a strict and very arguably unnatural diet is just plain stupid.

Why is it OK to hurt plants but not animals? Plants don't even have a chance to escape and the only ones that can fight back are those that have evolved poisons.

Damn hypocritical vegans! And don't tell me plants don't feel pain (^). Go eat rocks or something.

I like some of the comments:

If meat eaters believe that stuffing their kids with meat and dairy is the only way, then they are welcome to do it. If vegans believe that meat and dairy are unhealthy why would they give that to their offspring? There is nothing scientific about this case.

This is a good effort, but a better troll would be:

If the eaters of innocent, slaughtered animals believe that stuffing their kids with the dead flesh and forced lactation of tortured creatures is the only way, then they are welcome to do it. If vegans believe that meat and dairy are the unholy road to damnation, and must be shunned by any spiritual being with a soul and a mind that empathizes with the suffering of other sentient lifeforms, why would they give that to their beloved children? There is nothing scientific about this case.

The hell?

1. How does anyone even GET rickets anymore? Just go out in the sun.
2. Kids can be vegans if you do it right (new window). Babies can't (they're supposed to nurse), but beyond that it's fine.

I'm no vegan, but I'm pretty sure they could have prevented the girl's rickets by supplimenting her diet with multi-vitamins (which is generally reccomended that all vegans/vegitarians should do).

I'm sure there's probably plenty of kids that are raised on vegan diets and do fine. But when you don't have a well-balanced diet, the chance to fark it up is greater.

If you're having to supplement your diet with external vitamin supplements, something is very wrong with your diet.

Living with a vegan has taught me one thing.

if you do it right, you never need supplements.

On the flip side, are you saying that anyone who takes any vitamins or supplements are "doing it wrong?"

Kome: Humans are supposed to eat meat as well as fruits and veggies. There really isn't anything more to say than that.

We're also "supposed to" sleep in caves and die when we are about 30 years old.

Anything else is just plain "unnatural."

============================================

It's possible and even healthy to raise kids vegetarian or vegan-- you just have to know what the hell you're doing.

I think many--BUT NOT ALL-- vegans (like this couple) are actually people with serious eating disorders. They argue health and ethics when in fact they're just covering up for slowly starving themselves for whatever dysfunctional reason.

============================================

I've been an on-again off-again vegetarian for a long time because I do have a very big problem with the horrific, nightmarish way almost all meat animals are treated.

If a typical person treated a dog half as bad as most pigs are treated, that person would be charged with a felony. And pigs are actually more intelligent than dogs.

There's also the fact that most farm raised animals are being fed corn and grains that, in this time of skyrocketing food costs, should be reserved for people.

So, ethically, I have much less problem with free-range raised animals and game meat. I still find it highly distasteful to see a large mammal being killed and slaughtered, but intellectually I can understand how it's OK so long as the animal suffering is minimal.

Rickets used to be very common. That's why we supplement milk with vitamin D, people in the northern latitudes rarely get enough sun exposure to meet their dietary needs. Caring more about fish than the health of your own child is stupid but being dumb enough not to give your child a 1 cent vitamin supplement is criminal. Lock the parents up and give the child to someone with a little bit of sense.

This was the only truly intelligent thing you said in your entire post. Everything else was strange, or not entirely thought through, or just plain wrong. But the above statement was absolutely perfect, especially the end clause.

Lack of calcium has the same effect on the body as a lack of vitamin D, as far as rickets goes.

That means that, not only did they not give her dairy, but they also didn't give her any of those Soy type milk replacements that are fortified with calium, nor did they give her much spinach or anything else containing calcium.

Or flintstones vitamins.

mamoru [TotalFark] 2008-06-08 12:30:56 PM
Just out of curiosity, for the people who keep bringing up vitamin supplements...

How easy is it to be sure that the vitamins in the supplement don't come from any animal products? Are they specifically labeled whether they do or don't? How strenuously to vegans check this?

If you have to supplement your diet with pills just to avoid disease, it is by definition an unhealthy diet.

Veganism is just dietary hypochondria. It's an expression of mental illness.

I'd say anxiety, depression, with a sprinkling of OCD. With douchetastic overtones.

TruBluBaptist: Vegetarians, vegans, whatever you call them, are all wrong. They have an illogical idea, and one which has nothing to do with morality or the bible and everything to do with liberal silliness.

"Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all of the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, now I give you everything." Genesis 9:1-3

So basically God went all willy wonka on creation? "everything you see here is edible."

Ignorant McNugget 2008-06-08 01:44:10 PM

Woah- megatroll?
Vegans and vegetarians are different.
