Is this a 'fags' joke?

The article does specifically mention "knitwear", so I'd guess it's more of a fashion thing than a gender thing. Cold English weather is non-discriminatory.

I say, old chap. Whatever happened to the smoking jacket?

That's knit funny.

For anyone who DNRTFA but wants to know what it's actually saying:

"...the extra CO2 produced under even the highest of the official estimates of [patio] heater deployment means they're a very small menace indeed... we'd guess it wouldn't be likely to be more than 350-400 ktCO2, against the UK total of 554.5 million tonnes."

"DEFRA itself, when not boosting knitwear, is unperturbed by outdoor heaters. Earlier this year Lord Rooker observed: "While patio heaters are wasteful, they account for a relatively small amount of energy use in comparison [to other energy-using products]". So DEFRA knows the impact is negligible, the European Commission knows the impact is negligible, and as he's been giving MPs the numbers and he's the Climate Change Minister, Woolas knows the impact is negligible."

"Meanwhile one possibly larger problem, the requirement for daylight running lights on cars, is estimated by the government to be likely to cause a 0.5 per cent increase in fuel consumption... The 'small' extra cost for the UK in terms of CO2 will be 340-1,100 ktCO2 per annum for passenger cars alone (based on DEFRA 2006 figures). It will be compulsory for new vehicles to be fitted with daylight running lights from 2011."

I like patio heaters. They're nice in the UK climate on a cool evening. Must get one.

I remember going to Portland to hang out w/ some eco-nuts. We all had coffee outside under a heater. Being outside trumps the stupidity of it I guess.

Yeah, but they work, trust me.

I would say it is more about convenience. If complaining about carbon emissions furthers their current position/status/angle the eco-nuts will drop the eco-card all day. But, I'd be willing to bet most of these people would gladly huddle around these heaters on a cold day, take an airplane across the country for a meeting (*cough* Gore *cough*), or... Well, you get the point.

An outdoor heater? I become livid looking at stupid things like open-air freezers in supermarkets, heaters blasting at the entry of big-box stores, while the front doors are open (I'm looking at you, Wal-Mart), and air conditioning that is turned on the instant the outside temperature goes above 70 degrees.

Then you'd really hate the "misters" that Arizonans uses on patios in the summer to keep people cool (because for some reason people "deserve" to keep cool when it's 115 outside).

Think the produce section of your grocery store.

Patio heaters and misters are completely ridiculous. If you're that cold or that hot, go inside where things are climate-controlled, you retard. Otherwise, dress appropriately.

Sheesh.

/damn last-minute corrections

I thought it was even more interesting that daylight running lights on cars cause an increase in carbon emissions but nary a peep was said about them. Quite hypocritical imo.

You're bossy enough to be British. I guess you don't have A/C in your home and cycle everywhere. Or maybe not?

I don't have A/C, I get 44 mpg(US) from my diesel car and I like patio heaters. Go be pseudo-green somewhere else, please.

I have to admit, I love outdoor heaters. I'm one of those people that are constantly freezing. So when I'm sitting on a patio with friends having a cold one I really appreciated that nice blast of heat behind me.

/will undoubtedly be wearing a "jumper" too

It only take five minutes or so to smoke a cigarette. Anyone that can't handle some cold for five minutes should find another way to spend their break.

Does anyone in Britain have A/C in the home? I know I didn't when I was living there, nor does any of my family of friends still there. Hence we have to sweat it out when the temperature gets really hot, instead of whine by the a/c. Of course now it is such a price I can't afford to use a/c in the US either.

That's exactly what smokers would like to do. It's because there's been a smoking ban that this started.

Man there is a whole lot of anger directed at people for doing things that don't affect those being angered in here.

Those aren't as bad as they seem. The open freezers are usually laid flat with the open part up. Heat rises, so you'll notice if you hold your hand a foot or two above the freezer, it isn't even that cold (ie. the heat from the air doesn't 'fall' in to the freezer).

The blasts of heat make sense too. The door is the major source of heat escape for the building. If they didn't blast heat at the door not only would it be cold there, but the cold would 'spread' to the rest of the building and they'd just have to turn up the other heat more.

With energy costs rising, these practices would get abandoned quickly if there were huge savings to be had.

BTW, I think patio heaters are wasteful though. I don't go out of my way to avoid them, but I'd rather just stay inside if it's cold.

They don't even help that much, they radiate the heat such that only the side of you that faces the heater is warm.

One place I went to for somebody's going-away party was downright uncomfortable. We felt like we were going to catch on fire from the insane heater, but our feet will still cold.
