Thanks for that, I'll be getting to bed much later than expected now...

Awesome more for the insight into Butch Vig's mind than for the song itself, perhaps. Thanks, subby, made my night.

Yeah, I went and watched the whole damn thing, too, good stuff. Enjoyed Vig. There's always a "looking behind the curtain to see Oz" element to this stuff, I'd almost rather not know, I come to hear songs (and almost imagine seeing them) as a whole, or if they're some kind of living, breathing thing. I felt that way with the Beatles' Anthology project, once you start isolating tracks on the mixer or hearing alternate takes of classics it demystifies a lot of it. And "In Bloom" is one of my least favorite Nirvana songs, yet there's something captivating about watching stuff like this, it gives me a deeper appreciation for what went into it.

1. Love Butch Vig.

2. There's a Beatles special; I think the 20th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

George Martin is doing the same thing with the master tapes. Incredible.

Even though I thought, and still think, Nirvana is 90% crap, it's always interesting to hear the parts of the whole.

Oh hell yeah.

I love VH1's "Classic Albums". Seen Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd and each was just incredible.

Interesting. I still, and will probably always think Vig kind of ruined this album by making it sound like it was recorded underwater (though it made the cover nice and illustrative), but still interesting. God bless "In Utero" for giving you a better picture of the band.

Watching the other ones, this is a great series. Butch Vig, much as I may disagree with some of his overdub decisions, is what I'd like to see every music documentary feature. Awesome link, subby.

I also find Nirvana to be overrated, but one has to admit, Nevermind is still an excellent album.

I dug Vig showing off the vocals. Especially the acapella with Grohl & Cobain.

/almost didn't recognize Novoselic.

No, one does not have to admit that.

"......serve the song"
(part where Grohl said he avoided fills)

YES!

Like Nirvana or not he nailed it with that.

Always serve the song.
All else is masturbatory.

I hated Albini's production on In Utero. Granted, Nevermind sounded very commercial, but the mixing and mastering was outstanding. In Utero sounds raw and harsh to me, and it's not the music, it's the production.

Butch Vig sucked the life out of Nevermind.

It's a shame you never see Butch Vig behind a console talking about recording Killdozer albums.

nirvana is alot like the rolling stones. they had 3 good songs and the rest is pathetic garbage. this song rules though.

you either don't know who Steve Albini is or missed the intent of In Utero....

That was kind of the point. The record company even got in REM's producer, Scott Litt, to try and fix a few of the tracks so they could get radio play, can't recall which ones - Heart Shaped Box, obviously though.

There really isn't anything to talk about. When he was doing their albums he was doing it on the cheap and he wasn't specifically making pop albums for mainstream consumption like he was here.

If you liked that, a really good DVD is Tom Dowd And The Language Of Music. He breaks down Layla in a similar manner. There was a lengthy chunk of time when almost anything great that came out on Atlantic Records had his fingerprints on it, and the DVD documents his career as both an engineer and a producer.

Pennyroyal Tea, as I recall.

In Utero was the first Nirvana album I actually liked--I wasn't all that interested in Nevermind as a young teen (except for "In Bloom," fittingly) and, although I appreciated the Devo cover on Incesticide, it wasn't until In Utero that the band's formula began to make sense to me. Cobain was a pop songwriter who didn't feel comfortable the further he got from the punk idiom--the flimsiness of his song structure shows considerably with super-slick production a la Vig, which almost completely emasculated the band's intensity.

I hear the whole album itself (Utero) was remastered, adding more low end to the mix--which was a wise decision, as Novoselic [sic?]'s bass tended to be a bit more like a guitar as he played it.

In the end, it's like comparing apples and oranges--one is the super-sleek pop "debut" (I know it's not their first album, but you get the point hopefully), while the other represents the band's artistic peak.

It's a shame Cobain tried to distance himself from that kind of harsh sound (and the band in general). "You Know You're Right" is an okay song, but it would have been great had it been given the Albini treatment.

/"I Hate Myself and Want To Die," "Marigold," and "Moist Vagina" are prime Nirvana cuts, all from the In Utero sessions

When "Smells Like..." first came out I thought it was one of THE worst songs I'd ever heard (from a technical and just a plain bad tune aspect). After the radio and MTV jammed it down our throats a thousand times per day it ended up being a decent song and then the rest became acceptable and then even somewhat likeable.

I guess that can be a good thing though. An old friend of mine forced me to listen to Soundgarden's "Louder Than Love" album all of the time. How on earth could anyone listen to that screeching crap, I thought. Til this day I think the old and new Soundgarden albums are genius on many levels.
