Does Spike Lee know that the Sopranos guy is doing a Marvin Gaye movie?

It was Truman Capote 2 years ago. It's nice to have a head-to-head clash of biopics.

Foster has reportedly secured a package of Gaye's biggest hits, while Gandolfini and his co-producers have secured the rights to Gaye's post-Motown tunes for Sexual Healing.

Ugh. David Foster gets the good tunes and Tony Soprano doesn't? This resolution was the work of the debil. I was so looking forward to a properly-done biopic.

this is whats missing from pop these days. Sure, clay Aiken and Timberlake can sing good, but not with the emotions and soul that Marvin had

It always makes me sad a good number of people don't know anything of him other than Sexual Healing. What's Going On was a sonic masterpiece that rivals Dark Side of the Moon.

Jesse L. Martin is a great choice for Marvin. When I first saw Rent I was struck by how much he reminded me of him.

What about the proposed M. Night Shamalamadingdong Marvin Gaye biopic "The Grapevine"? That movie looks like it will rock more than "The Lady", "The Village", and "The Sixth Sense" combined.

Not just his work (and he was a jack-of-all-trades in the early days of Motown, lending songwriting and other help to tons of great tracks), but he had a fascinating life worth looking into. His death and what led up to that will probably tell a big part, but he was tormented by other demons like drugs and failed relationships that fueled his artistry. He also came out of a gospel background, singing in the church as a boy, and for guys like him (and Sam Cooke, among others at the time) to make the crossover into secular music was also a painful thing that created a lot of tension. I like the choice of Jesse L. Martin for the one film, just hope they do some justice to the story.

One other thing that was key was his insistence on his own independence, and the difficulty of going up against Berry Gordy and his rigid ways of doing things. Stevie Wonder, as well. Motown was a "hit factory" oddly modeled on the local auto industry, and factory workers were supposed to stick to their job on the assembly line. I hope they dig into a lot of this stuff.

This subject has taken TOO long to get out there as a movie.

Marvin is truly one of the greatest of all time.

PERIOD.

I just can't wait for the movies. But I hope they are decent and not "TV movie of the week" style.

I don't know if it was me, but I was MAD when they released RAY and saw it wondering, "why haven't they still made a movie for Marvin Gaye?"
