Can I have some fries with that?

Not naming it after a person is not a valid excuse. It appears to be anti-Latino sentiment behind the reasoning. This issue should be left to the community, not a board.

yup. you have the freedom to have your democratic vote ignored. YAY DEMOCRACY!

OMG for once I actually agree with you. I think it's time for that lobotomy.

Here's a hint for driving in Urban Texas: Never turn down any street named Cesar Chavez, or MLK. You'll only get raped.

A lot of Mexicans here don't really pay much attention to who Cesar Chavez really was out here. That's much more of a California thing. Thinks they thought it was the boxer.

/Mexican from CA who now lives in TX.

I think that applies to anywhere in the US with said streets. Although CC out here isn't too bad, MLK on the other hand you do need to be a bit more careful. Oh and you can't be white.

But for Mexican-Americans in Texas during the 60s and the 70s Cesar Chavez was important, whether they were farm workers who directly benefited from the UFW's activities or where up-and-coming politicos who were inspired by Chavez.

Maybe the ones I've talked to out here about the subject just didn't care about the subject. His movement was a big thing for me in my childhood. I grew about about 500 feet from his home where he started his activities on Scharff Ave in East San Jose, and would have to walk through demonstrations going on at Mayfair Park when I'd walk home from school. Didn't know what they were really all on about, but I though the chanting and flags were pretty cool.

"At City Hall on Friday, officials who at one time saw the Internet and telephone poll as a way to engage the public"

There was an Internet poll?

Someone tell the city council that they're damned lucky they don't have to commission signs for UFIA Boulevard.

(farkers, we failed.)

They tried to name our Interstate Ave. in Portland to Cesar Chavez Blvd. It failed with a big GTFO from the voters.

Why do you look like Cesar Romero?

Because you don't know what Cesar Chavez looks like.

When will they learn that you can't use internet polls to determine anything of substance.

//although it is close...

Urban Texas? Have you been? You must be confused. I used to live right next to MLK in Austin. The worst thing that will happen is you'll get your car towed if you decide to walk around. Cesar Chavez is nothing to cry about either.

/are we talking about east Austin?
//Because east Austin is Mexico

superspeck 2008-06-08 12:08:33 AM
Stevie Ray Vaughn Boulevard was also a choice. He has Dallas ties and is a much better guitar player than Chavez.

As a Dallas resident, I must say that the part of town Industrial Boulevard is in will never be "nice." Lew Sterrit Justice center (the huge Dallas jail) is there. Pawn shops. Liquor stores. Bail Bonds. Warehouse businesses.

The name Industrial is apt. They want to change it in order to spray some perfume on the stupid Trinity River Improvement project, which is going to be a dismal failure.

Dallas has been doing it wrong since 1963.

fotojenic: Is Industrial Blvd. the street with all the hookers?

Hilariously enough, given the headline, Kansas City's hookers ply their trade booty on *Independence* Avenue.

Freedom Boulevard, FTW!

This seems similar to something that happened in my home town.. They went to rename the minor league baseball team, and let the 'fans' votes for their favorite name... There was a clear winner... The team went with the name that came in second to last..

What the hell does the Sky Chiefs have anything to do with Syracuse NY anyways? Not like we ever saw the sky.........

Well i dunno about anything Cesar Chavez related, as i can't think of any around my area (and i live in Long Island, New York... maybe it's just not a NY thing?), but anything named after MLK is instant death.

It's sad really, such a great man who fought for great things, now his name is basically associated with crime and trash. There are two MLK's around here that i can think of off the top of my head, one is a street where even the cops don't drive down (that's the word on the street anyway), and another is in the town where I work. Both are really REALLY bad areas, where delivery drivers get robbed all the time. I personally haven't been so lucky to get robbed, I've only met really nice people there myself. But the pizzeria where i work, is the ONLY one in the town that will still deliver there... which sucks.

/Yes, you know the type of people i'm referring to. I don't think i really need to spell it out.

Damn the oppressive white man. I blame Bush!!!!!oneoneone!!!

Austinoftx 2008-06-08 12:28:19 AM
How about "Bald Eagle With Tear In His Eye Blvd", and they can name one of the crossroads "Real ID Avenue". They can build the "George W Bush Presidential Diner" and serve "Freedom Fries" there.

OMFarkinG I'm looking forward to the cultural backlash to come someday.

I'm just glad they didn't name it Democracy Blvd.

darkvstar 2008-06-08 12:36:33 AM
in Carlsbad CA, the last outpost of the bleeding heart white upper middle class, where they call their manholes "access holes" for fear of offending the crazy feminists, it is mandated by law that all the new streets lying within the boundaries of the old original ranchos must have hispanice names. it is rather hasty to presume that only poor mexicans live on streets with Spanish names.

I_AM_M 2008-06-08 12:37:48 AM
Cezar has enough streets named after him. He ruined Army St. in SF, so that's enough. I guess I should have picked lettuce for a living instead of going to college, I don't have a friggin street named after me.

Yeauch. Driving in that city is awful. Granted, driving in most really big cities is awful. But still.
