Ah I can see it from that angle, I was thinking more along the lines of the dancers being from Obama dancing in Obama's birthplace as being ironic.

How ironic that somewhere that is not famous for hula-dancers would send hula-dancers to somewhere that is famous for hula-dancers. Like rain on your wedding day.

The story of people in 小浜市(Obama City) supporting Obama has been novelty news in Japan for some time. I never heard about the hula though.

The last NHK morning drama show "chiritotechin" had the main character from Obama City, so Obama City was sort of in the news already, and then the US Democratic primary was also in the news, so it sorta married I guess.

I never have been to Obama city but maybe now I'll visit on vacation, because of the drama (not the candidate).

I saw them, or a similar one, at said festival. Their announcer had a thick Japanese accent, I was trying not to scream.
