I fail to see how this is ironic.... then again this is Fark.

Irony probably lies in the fact that hula dancers are being shipped in from Japan to Hawaii to dance, as if we don't have enough hula dancers in Hawaii already. Still, STRANGE or WEIRD may have been a better pick, subby

Ah I can see it from that angle, I was thinking more along the lines of the dancers being from Obama dancing in Obama's birthplace as being ironic.

How ironic that somewhere that is not famous for hula-dancers would send hula-dancers to somewhere that is famous for hula-dancers. Like rain on your wedding day.

Seabon 2008-06-07 08:29:17 PM
Like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife?

bartink 2008-06-07 08:29:47 PM
This is about as ironic as when it rains on your wedding day.

The story of people in 小浜市(Obama City) supporting Obama has been novelty news in Japan for some time. I never heard about the hula though.

The last NHK morning drama show "chiritotechin" had the main character from Obama City, so Obama City was sort of in the news already, and then the US Democratic primary was also in the news, so it sorta married I guess.

I never have been to Obama city but maybe now I'll visit on vacation, because of the drama (not the candidate).

It is ironic because Obama's hometown once danced in a hula girl from Obama, Japan.

Irony my shirt!

I came in here to be a vocabulary snob and point out that this is in fact anything but ironic, but now I find it very ironic that there were other people inhere doing it before me. Penis.

It's ironic because the town of McCain, Scotland sent a group of old drunken sailors to harass the Obama girls as they performed.

Sure, it's ironic. They're hula dancers but they're coming from Obama in Japan to dance where Obama came from in Hawaii which is already full up on hula dancers. There are like 3 or 4 separate ironic axes in there.

It is technically ironic. But its irony in the "its weird it happened" instead of delicious irony.

For instance, if it rains on your wedding day, its technically ironic. But if you are a weatherman, its irony gold.

Cuthbert Allgood 2008-06-07 09:08:11 PM
i don't think it's irony

alacy52 2008-06-07 09:09:10 PM
Not ironic unless the dancers support McCain.

zodar99 2008-06-07 09:10:54 PM
It's coincidence, not irony.

Obama already has a town named after him? In Japan no less. This cult of personality has gone too far. Soon, it won't be planet Earth, it'll be planet Obama.

Anyone who calls this irony is nothing but an appeaser.

Yea I said it.

That's not ironic, it's just coincidental!

No, more like sending ice machines to Point Barrow to mix margaritas for your honeymoon.

What's needed here is an "Irrelevant" tag.

Rain on your wedding day is in no way ironic, not even by technicality. I think you're otherwise correct.

I saw them, or a similar one, at said festival. Their announcer had a thick Japanese accent, I was trying not to scream.

"Our hura harau will now perform a piece about the beauty of the Hawaiian irands..."
