Comunity college is a requisite of becoming a productive member of society?

/HS grad (barely)

Community college gets such a bad rap. I've noticed, with the exception for a handful of "13th graders," community colleges are full of students who are really trying to better themselves.

Boy I love those articles where the journalist can't bother to write anything that isn't exactly what's in the video.

"High school was about discipline for me, that was the wrong idea at the time. One of the reasons I dodged college for so many years, is 'cause I thought, 'It's school, what do I want with that stuff?'" said Pinkerton.

Der. What a maroon.

It always amuses me to see what passes for personal assessment skills in people. This guy is clearly not some useless hippy. Maybe subby needs to get the fat ass off the couch and get a life.

I was at a 4 year university until I had to make a very last minute move out of state to deal with a "family crisis". I ended up in community college for 2.5 semesters (summer doesn't count), and I was shocked.

The teahers ... cared. The students ... worked. I enjoyed my time at the CC way more than my fancy-ass university.

/I was also in math-based classes where slackers were unlikely to be found.
// I'm sure they're still plentiful in "[insert ethnic minority here] Literature" class.

A college degree? Let's be fair, it's a community college degree.

Actually I have no problem with community colleges, and I'm thinking about going to one to get another degree after finishing my bachelors at my overpriced university.

I think it was more a statement about hippies not being productive members of society.

/I could be wrong though.

Mana: The teahers ... cared. The students ... worked. I enjoyed my time at the CC way more than my fancy-ass university.

My father taught music comp, music theory, history of music, etc at CCP for like, ever, and he used to say CC's were the only place where you'd see the most diligent, studious students sitting side by side with the the kids who are goofin' off and doodlin' or empty seats because they never come to class.

Unfortunately, he was a real asshole and a deadbeat dad who taught me absolutely nothing except that he was an asshole and a deadbeat dad.

My sister took a bunch of classes at CCP before transferring the credits to Drexel, where she got her degree in ...accounting.

/she's got her masters and she still ain't makin' that much, and she works at A...Asher? I don't know how to spell it

When I saw it was a WCCO article, I cringed. But it wasn't as bad as I imagined.

Frankly, I'd rather the losers from my state be represented by goofy hippies than by cross-eyed rednecks.

There was a time when I thought I wanted to be a professional opera singer. After I realized that the odds of that succeeding were astronomical, and that I probably wouldn't get over my stage-fright anyway (I had a great voice for small audiences -- crowds did me in) ... point is, I've been in music classes at the collegiate level, and every single person there was a raging asshat, without exception.

I've seen so many college graduates get out and continue their "careers" as waiter/waitresses because it pays more than a "career" in their field would.

Fark that I say.

Leashlaw [TotalFark] 2008-06-07 05:53:50 PM
I dropped out of HS in 10th grade and lived on the streets for years. Got my GED when I was 20 and started going to CC when I was 26. I was amazed when I stared CC and discovered that, in spite of what my HS teachers had told me, I was smart. I was on the Dean's/Prez's list while working full time, and having my daughter in the middle of my 2nd year there. I graduated with honors and was chosen to give the Commencement speech. Last June I finished my BA in Human Services at a great State Univ and also graduated with Prez Honors. I am starting Grad school in December.
HS is bullshiat and I am still at proud of my decision to spend my time in the school of life instead. Aside from being a Hippie, I think this guy is awesome for what he has accomplished.
/getting a kick...
