Japanese people are stupid. In a country that is very expensive to begin with, they believe that overpaying for things confers real prestige, and will line up to do it. Srsly. The $15k martini is a PR gimmick, but years ago they would buy $75 melons in wooden gift crates. Shelling out the cash means you care, even for something stupid.

Hey, didn't McDonald's have the Million dollar cup of coffee a few years back. You know, lady poured it on herself and blamed them for serving it hot.

Or even better...coffee beans processed (eaten, then digested) by cats...then pooped out! That's REALLY 'spensive!

Forgot what they called it, though...

Dood, if you want butt-coffee, come by and I'll set you up with a couple buckets. I've been meaning to clean out the garage, anyway.

Reread the case, apparently the coffee melted through the bottom of her cup and scalded her badly because of it. Huge difference.

/when coffee goes through the bottom of the cup, there's something wrong with it
//I don't expect hot liquids to go through the bottom of my cups, either

Nail. Head. Hit.

Things are definitely changing, though. The gap between rich & poor is growing and the prices commodities like gas & food are rising. Hopefully consumerism on this kind of insulting level will soon disappear.

FTA

Last year saw the launch of several luxury promotions aimed at the growing class of super-rich, including a $15,000 diamond martini and a $108 hamburger, reminiscent of Japan's 1980s "bubble economy" when the newly rich showed off their wealth with fast cards and lavish parties.

WTF is a fast card? I want one, unless they are like flash cards, then I don't want one.

Conspicuous consumption will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever disappear. It might decline, but it'll eventually flare up like the herpes that tramp Jessica gave me. Razor burn my ass!

My local coffee shop Zoka charges $2.50-$4.50 for a cup of coffee from their fancy pants "Clover" coffee brewer. It is like a vacuum French press.

It does taste better than normal coffee but I suspect it is due to the use of more grounds per cup.

As it turns out, it's actually the normal price for coffee over there. The weak dollar makes it look expensive.

As the Japanese pay $7 for a peach, this is not that out of line.
As for the $15 martini, isn't that the going rate in NYC, as well, in a nice bar/club/restaurant these days?

TPS Reports 2008-06-08 12:12:31 AM
dereksmalls: As the Japanese pay $7 for a peach, this is not that out of line.

No they don't. 2.50. Still way overpriced, for sure, but they are also about twice the size of peaches in the states and are damn tasty.

What IS expensive is good beer. Even Sam farking Adams goes for 3 bucks a bottle at my local supermarket. Microbrews are gaining popularity but even those are expensive as shiat.

I live in Osaka, by the way, which is #8 on the list of most expensive cities.

faceintheflame 2008-06-08 12:36:48 AM
$50 for coffee... Sounds like Starbucks.
