Well, as I'm submitter knows, bicyclists in NYC are above the law so it hardly matters what the mayor says.

BizarreRecords 2008-06-07 01:25:07 PM
Cant they put a little rack on the front like the busses?

lolmadillo 2008-06-07 04:02:48 PM
they should let you ride the bike behind the train pulled by a leash or harness or something

Antidamascus 2008-06-07 04:05:00 PM
Or they could ride the bike to wherever they want to go, isn't that why they have it?

chrismurphy 2008-06-07 04:06:36 PM
It is crowded, but that does not make it too crowded for bikes. You can't get everywhere in this city in a timely manner by subway and walking alone. Would he also ban baby carriages and fat people to reduce crowding.

Since it's not really the mayor's decision anyway, why doesn't he do something that is within his power, like pounce on drivers that see it fit to intentionally cut off bikes whenever they can. I'd like to see him suggest some bear pepper spray in the eyes of thugs in big cars that get all aggressive and cocky.

chrismurphy 2008-06-07 04:09:21 PM
On the other hand, I'd also suggest the mayor make it legal to clothesline bikers who bore full speed through crosswalks full of people while also going against the direction of traffic. No pain or torture, like pepper spray, merely prompt head removal.

It often is way too crowded for bikes.

Baby Carrages are not allowed.

If you limit yourself to riding in the bike lanes and stopping for red lights you would be amazed how much less pepper spray you will need.

If the subway's too crowded, the answer isn't banning things, it's expanding service and getting more trains/routes operating.

Antidamascus: Or they could ride the bike to wherever they want to go, isn't that why they have it?

I agree that it's odd to use one form of transportation to move another form of transportation. However, multiple things can go wrong with a bike. The other day my left pedal stripped the crank arm and fell off, and I had to ride the bus home. In addition, while this isn't relevant in flat NYC, here in Cincinnati there are ~45 (degree symbol) hills which are near impossible to bike up without a crank with lots of teeth and fixed gear.

The Lexington Ave line is well above capacity. No more headway for additional trains nor platform space for longer sets.

I haven't seen any bikers on the subway causing trouble, but the comparison to baby carriages is ridiculous. Besides the fact that if you have a baby, you're not going to carry them around in your arms all day, bicycles take up a lot more space (and are a lot less maneuverable) than baby carriages. Now maybe if you had a unicycle that would be a fair comparison, but it's not.

The Lexington Avenue line is my nearest line.

It's by far overcrowded. I read recently that the daily ridership on the Lexington Ave. line is greater than the entire daily ridership of the Boston, San Francisco, and D.C. subway systems combined. And the Lex line is just one of many in NYC.

Supposedly the 2nd Avenue line is coming along at some point to alleviate the pressure, but I'll believe it when I see it. It's only roughly 80 years behind schedule at this point.

I don't think the mayor doesn't want to see tight pants and wangs on the subway with him. They make him act gay and he doesn't want that. The mayor does in fact ride the subway in New York for work just like every other New Yorker.

Don't worry Lexington Avenue riders, the 2nd Avenue Subway has finally started construction again and the first part will be done in seven years.

Cunning plan, thought all the way through, not.

Anyway, why not simply relegate bicyclists so they can only have their bikes on there not during rush hour? That's what the PATH system does. The trains really ARE too crowded during the rush hour, but there's no reason they can't have two bikes per car off-hours.

The First 2008-06-07 05:24:30 PM
As a subway rider in NY, I'm not opposed to this. The subways are incredibly crowded as it is. Many of the bike riders decide to stand in the middle of the car, taking up an incredible amount of space. Then when their stop comes they rush to the door not caring if they hit anyone along the way.

Besides, if they riding the bike, why the fark do they need to take the damn subway?

Christ. I retract my previous statement. Ban everything except people and maybe a couple bags until they get some contruction done.

The First 2008-06-07 05:29:23 PM
Doc Daneeka, The 'F' and 'E' line is just as crowded. It's funny how these MTA folks and analysts only look at the Lex Ave line when making a case for over-crowdedness. Many people forget that ALL trains coming from Queens into Manhattan have to go through the Roosevelt Avenue station (E, F, G, R, V lines). And E and F are the only ones that are express so you can imagine how crowded these lines get once the train hots Roosevelt Avenue. Some days it so bad that you literaly have someone 1/2 inch away from your nose. I wouldn't complain if the person looked like Jessica Alba -- but they don't. God, they don't.

How do they balance both tires so perfectly on the tracks?

/SEPTA allows bikes on all trains and buses during off-peak hours
//it's decent even though it's $2/fare, unless you buy tokens which are $1.45 each but you have to buy at least 2.
///and $2/token gets you from anywhere to anywhere in philly wit da free interchange under city hall, plus some of the 'burbs

Look at it this way: The MTA doesn't have station workers push you onto the train.

Have you been to New York?

I often see trains in NYC that are as crowded as the one in that picture, or worse. Particularly during rush hours.

I see floorspace for at least four more people on there.

Perhaps they can put a rack on the front and tie Bloomberg to it.

According to the article, not even the MTA buses have bike racks.

FTA...Norvell noted that unlike other municipalities, buses here, according to the MTA, aren't equipped to handle bicycles.

How about a smaller frame and one less wheel (new window) ? Is that OK?

Mayor Bloomberg is simply evil and insane.

F*** IT! MAKE THE BABIES WALK!

/also, make the age- and height-challenged persons walk, in addition to the bicyclists

Okay, but no cars in Central Park, EVER!

I guess I'd say it's too crowded for bikes," the mayor said.

You guess? Way to tell the Metropolitan Transit Authority the way to do their jobs, asstard.
