(ABC News) Interesting Istanbul re-emerges as Beacon of Bosporus. Even old New York was once New Amsterdam, why they changed it I can't say, people just liked it better that way   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 97

Not Constantinople?

ndotseth 2008-06-07 10:12:06 AM
Because New Amsterdam was Dutch, who were in control of the city at the time. When the Brits took over they gave it a British name - York.
Duh!

i don't hate TMBG, but I think it is an emperor's new clothes type deal. the fan base is typically more educated than that of Steve Miller / Limp Bizkit, so I think there is a "we get the joke and you don't" element to their fan base. but they really suck, but no one wants to admit it.

that said, I do like the "little bee in your bonnet" song.

I have a theory that each and every band, no matter how gagtastic they are, has one good song. "Little Bee In Your Bonnet" is TMBGs. Everything else blows ass.

There's a documentary on TMBG, "Gigantic" that really pushed me over into the camp of hating them, because their fans were such smug pricks, most notably the truly hateable Sarah Vowell (yeah, we get it, you talk like you're 10 and don't like anything) and public radio douche Ira Glass (yeah, we get it, you talk like a nerd because you don't want to have a "radio voice"). And I don't like the music enough to want to be in that set.

/does like the song "Ana Ng"

Never understood the light hearted nature of the city's renaming. It was in the aftermath of the brutal '19 - '22 Greco-Turkish War; a war which saw the massacre of Greeks, Armenians and Turks by the combatants and ended with a population exchange [expulsion of Greeks and Turks from their respective homes] resulting in the destruction of centuries (or in many cases millennium) old communities.

TMBG - great set of talent, poor execution.

Great lyrics, content yet still is mostly unlistenable.

Their 'style' is that of a comedy group with instruments.

She's walking round wearing all of my clothes
But we decided long ago

Just remember that every gal in Constantinople actually lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople.

So if you have a bikini-clad date in Constantinople, she'll be tethered to a chandelier in Istanbul.
