How can I forget, when the local radio station plays that song at least once a week?

Saw them back in 1980 or 1981 at Madison Square Garden on the Dream Police tour. The Romantics (that's what I like about you) opened for them. What a great show.

TOTALLY busted out theSaw them during their "reuinion" tour in I believe 1990 in a nightclub in downtown Chicago. I felt so lucky to see them. Zander has got the killer rockstar pipes.
/Had my Bic out for "The Flame"

Not just that, but one of the best band introductions EVAR...

Hey, it was the 70's, that's how we wanted it done.

As opposed to one of the worst band introductions ever... from the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East:

As much as I usually disagree with the Fark music cognoscenti, Cheap Trick rule.

At least up until 1980 or so. Then they went the same direction as most '70s bands who survived into the '80s, except for the Talking Heads.

Even into the early 80's they did the intros awsome.

Crazy guy banging on a bell "Are you ready for ______ to KICK YOUR ASS!!!!!! here they are ... _______ !!!!!! " crowd goes wild.

And always always always play AC/DC before the headliner , always.

I always wanted to have hot, sweaty jungle sex with Robin Zander...

dougfm 2008-06-07 10:51:47 AM
I don't know what footage that was but it wasn't from Budokan. Any of you who have the album, listen to the way Robin introduces the song and then watch the video again. Two different things.

I made a shirt that says "I went to the Michael Anthony and Tom Petersson bass clinic, and all I can do is play the top string"

Also, I wanted to add that Bun E. Carlos is underrated.

First live show I ever saw. They opened for Head East summer of 1978 at a crappy little venue downtown Cedar Rapids. I believe Max Webster opened the show. It was around the time "Heaven Tonight" came out. I was blown away. Been a fan ever since---seen them half a dozen times since and was never disappointed.

FlashHarry [TotalFark] 2008-06-07 12:12:32 PM
saw 'em a couple of years ago at the nebraska state fair. great show. zander's pipes are still in great shape. and from relatively far away, he actually kinda looks the same. one of the all-time great bands, and the best power-pop band evar.

... and yeah, we need more not-crappy bands in the area.

I used to pack Rick Nielson's guitars when he would ship them to various places. Expensive things, strange dressing man.

/true story
//is he still building his guitar museum/hotel off Riverside?

I've been to Rockford and the Budokan, and never managed to see Cheap Trick... 残念だな〜

shiznatz 2008-06-07 01:50:26 PM
My band plays this song every weekend and it still kills. Even if the crowd is dead, we always seem to get a few young ladies willing to sing the backgrounds on the chorus. Good Times.

Dear Jerk 2008-06-07 02:17:27 PM
I don't think anyone beats They Might Be Giants for intros.

"Every once in a while a band comes along that changes the course of human history, and that band is They Might Be Giants."
Tom Poston, the New York Times.

"Like so many things I can't understand, they left my teeth chattering for more."
Peggy Cass, Aquarian Weekly

"Maestro! I say right on!"
Orson Bean, Sky and Telescope

"If you hear only one song this year, there's something terribly wrong with you."
Kitty Carlyle, Easy Riders

Ladies and gentlemen, do not be alarmed. Please remain perfectly still. What you are about to see is real. The performers are not grinning scarecrows sent here to torture and manipulate you.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce the twin quasars of rock. Please give a warm, friendly hand to They Might Be Giants!

Yes. Right off I-90.

CravenMorehead: I thought you guys had the biggest porno book store in the country too.

I've never heard about that. As a matter of fact, adult stores aren't allowed in the city. Or nude strip clubs. Or pretty much anything else remotely risque'

I live about 10 minutes from Rockford, so I'm getting a big kick...

Seriously tho, the fact that Cheap Trick is the best thing ever to come from Rockford does not speak well for us.

Cheap Trick lives up to it's name.

Firststepsadoozie 2008-06-08 07:58:39 AM
I saw them in Augusta, Ga in 1986 when they opened for Ratt.
I still have one of Ricks guitar picks from when he started tossing them rapid fire during a solo.
An honest 1/3 of the crowd left after their set.

Peaceboy: As opposed to one of the worst band introductions ever... from the Allman Brothers at Fillmore East:

That Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East is an incredible album. They didn't need to use a lame stunt or a "cheap trick" to introduce themselves on stage as so many other lesser bands did.
