Panic's debut album, 2005's "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out," sold 1.67 million units, according to Billboard, thanks mostly to the hit single - and MTV Video of the Year - "I Write Sins Not Tragedies."

Wow, a whole 1.67 million units? Just barely platinum? I bet each band member got a nice 5 figure check.

So they want to sound like The Beatles, Dylan and the Who instead of that emo crap they put out before?

And this is a bad thing?

Someone needs to tell these lads that they aren't allowed to grow or change. If you are a flavor of the month, you are required to do the same thing again and hope it pans out. If not, you will be replaced by the latest flavor and watch from the sidelines as they go through what you just experienced.

You can't have artistic integrity. Not yours.

Even the pre-teens that buy this stuff know a bad Beatles rip-off when they see one. The public can be ridiculously stupid, but not that stupid.

Verfall 2008-06-06 03:50:39 PM
So how do you say their name again?

Do you shout out PANIC or is it like that Russell Peters joke and you go Panic "click" At the Disco?

Gravyguts 2008-06-06 03:54:37 PM
i dont know about that Boris. they sold over a million albums on their first one. But this band is truly talent-less, regardless of what the article says. i'm willing to bet this band didnt even write most of the music they play. Same with most of the crap-tacular emo bands of today. people are finally getting over the emo thing and are thirsting for something new. Metal (however you can describe that now) is on the rise. i think its from Guitar Hero. Bringing back real music the masses instead of this shrink wrapped shiate they try to pass as music today.

/rant over.

Their first album was a guilty pleasure for me. I knew it was crap but I liked it.

When I listened to the second album I hadn't read anything about it. I didn't know what direction they were going for but I remember thinking, "This is ok, but I liked it better when the Beatles did it first."

They should have taken a page out of the Killer's book. Dumping the make up and attempting to grow up after you've had ONE popular CD doesn't work. You have to age over time.

CarnySaur 2008-06-06 04:08:44 PM
They should change their name to Pancake! at the Disco.

Funny how many emo bands are quick to throw emo under the bus. Maybe they realize that suicide-driven shoegazers aren't a profitable market for over-produced studio junk music.

Whether or not I like their music, and I don't, I respect them for this. When you're in the momentary gaze MTV's ADHD culture you have every reason to stay the same in order to keep people's attention; it's product branding.

Nickleback are the kings at this, they not only release the same album every 4 years, they release the same single over and over too. They barely change their look, their hair, their guitars, their tone, their song structure... they basically just keep everything the same because as soon as they change one insignificant thing they're going to alienate their rabidly-finicky fans and their sales will drop. Suddenly they'll be looked at as failures and has-beens.

So I guess what I'm saying is that if this industry calls you a failure, where a band like Nickleback is the benchmark for success, then you're probably doing something right... even if your music does suck.

Well, I'd say their "suicide-driven" album is actually turning out to be more profitable than their current one.

Funny thing is, the Killers also jumped the shark on the sophomore effort in much the same way - Brandon Flowers grew a goatee and pushed the band from the euro-glam they built their sound around to Springsteen-style Americana.

To quote Pitchfork's review of Sam's Town: "When you reach for Springsteen and miss, you become Meat Loaf."

I like both of them.

First one was damn catchy and bouncy, not even really emo. It goes from techno dance over to cabaret styles. Most of you are probably only calling it emo because of what the guys look like.

The second one I don't like quite as much just because its a sound that I have to be in a certain mood for. Its calmer and well...pretty and odd really.

Before they released their first album, they never played a live show. This was their first album. Kind of impressive.. Fall Out boy had a lot to do with Panic's success, but still 1.67 million is damned good for a bands first album.

With that said, i never really listened to the second album. The first one was a great poppy album. Don't think i even gotta hold of the second one yet.

Their music isn't bad at all. As a Bluegrass guy, I'm surprised at how good emo, well 21st century emo, is. I couldn't really get into the original emo.

creepycrawly 2008-06-07 12:27:35 AM
Panic at the Disco was never emo. Same goes for Fall Out Boy. If the music can be played in a dance hall, it is not emo. A band like Weezer is more emo than either of those two bands.

Panic's second album is quite excellent, actually, if you like the Who. I think it sounds more like the Left Banke, the Turtles and Mike Nesmith's First National Band. Most of the lyrics don't really mean anything, but I'm not sure they're supposed to. It just seems as if they're going for a particular sound. You can call them mimics if you like, because it's true. Every band sounds like some other band, though.

I dislike Fall Out Boy, but I can't say I hate them. My hate is used up on bands such as Nickelback and Hinder and Buckcherry. Putrid. But if you like those bands and want to "rock out" to them, go ahead. Just tell me in advance so I can be somewhere else.

I don't own either Panic album, but I liked the singles that hit radio. They never were TRULY emo. I like the comparison to Cabaret... and if you've seen their videos, they've been in that vein too.

falconpunch: Why does everyone rip on "emo"(if Ian Mackaye heard you call it emo he would smite you) for being depressing? Doesn't anyone remember grunge?

Grunge seemed to come from people with actual problems, much like the blues (see all the alcohol/drug problems in Northwest Washington state for a reason).

The problem with Emo (as it stands today) is it comes from people with made-up problems, or at least that's the consensus.

Panic! At The Disco is not emo... Most of the bands people call emo, fit into the "Pop Punk" genre.

If you would like to hear some actual emo bands, may I recommend "Circle Takes The Square", "Pg. 99", "City Of Caterpillar", or "Moss Icon", just to name a few. I'm almost positive they'll sound nothing like you're expecting...

/First Fark Post
//Oh well...

Pop Punk is crap too. how the hell can you add "Pop" to Punk? Doesnt punk totally stand for anti-pop? non mainstream? against the grain? come on people, i hate punk, three chord crap, but i still understand what they are trying to do. even if it is crap :)

Whether it's any good or not, I'm just sick of people labeling Pop Punk bands as emo...
And while we're at it, there's no such genre as "Screamo"... It's called "Third-Wave-Emo". Unlike the first and second waves of emo (Which contain of the bands I listed earlier), third wave draws a lot of influence from Pop-Punk, which people commonly mistake as emo. Which is probably why, with the hardcore element thrown in, third wave has commonly become referred to as "Screamo".
So, I'm asking nicely, please get your genres straight... otherwise I might implode...

...then again, that might be pretty cool.

I really enjoyed their new album. Yes, it was sort of Beatles, hippyish sounding. That was the point. Have you seen the video for Nine In The Afternoon? It's very similar to Sgt. Pepper. They say in interviews that The Beatles were there main influence. I've enjoyed both of their CDs. They have a different sound than most of the other stuff out there. And Brandon can ACTUALLY sing. You don't see that very often.
