(News.com.au) Asinine Israeli prime minister says major incursion to Gaza Strip is "looking more likely." Strictly for security reasons, of course, and not because he's being investigated for bribery and facing calls for his resignation   (news.com.au) divider line 546

Right, because we all know that the knee jerk reaction for any leader under investigation is to start a war. Right? This has nothing to do with you know who's windy, continuous threat of extracting Israel from all those maps.

The daily rocket attacks lobbed over from Gaza aren't a factor either, I'm sure...

You mean the ones that they have a missile system designed to shoot down?

I think this smells a lot more of Bush pressure than kneejerks from the leader.

olmert may have more israeli support and people wouldn't care about his bribery issues if he grew a pair and actually kicked some hezbollah/ hamas ass.

Olmert's a sleazeball, but this is probably the right call. Tzipi Livni would do the same thing if she was in power (which she will be any week now).

I have a simple solution to the Gaza situation:

Gazans: Stop launching rockets at Israel.

Israelis: Open up some of the border crossings and let in some gasoline and electricity and stuff.

I'm not sure if this counts as a Godwin, but do you think if Hitler had been allowed to fully implement the Final Solution that Israel would be this powerful? I mean, I acknowledge that it would have been a horrific tragedy, but at least we wouldn't have the Middle East problems we have right now.

There is no such system today. What they have is the "Color Red" warning system, which sometimes doesn't even go off in time. The rockets don't usually spend more then a minute or two in flight.

the rockets are the chinese water torture approach to war, i suppose.

Myself i think hamas wants gaza re-invaded by the israelis. They did pretty good as an islamist "resistance" but they can't govern shiat.

Which have nothing to do with the force-of-arms creation of Israel after World War II, and the displacement of those who had lived there beforehand.

It's a giant shiatfest, and there is no peaceful solution, since neither side is willing to cooperate with the other. Because the Israelis have been given a country they don't want to give up, and the Palestinians have been gravely wronged in the process.

Basically, say you had two young sons. One of them has a popsicle, the other a candy bar. A bully beats up one of your sons, and takes his candy bar. So you take the popsicle from the other, and give it to the one who lost the candy bar.

Popsicle-boy is justifiable pissed off, because he didn't do anything wrong and shouldn't have lost his popsicle. Candy-bar-boy, having lost his candy bar, isn't about to let the popsicle go. There is no peaceful solution, here, since they two of them are completely unwilling to share the popsicle, and even if we try and force them to, it'll just make them both resentful for the lack of the other half they each feel entitled to.

The Duke of Carrot Flowers 2008-06-06 12:47:35 PM
Also, Israel said today that it would attack Iran"if it doesn't abandon its nuclear program" (new window). And that any military strike against Iran "would have U.S. backing." God, I like the Middle-East.

Israel-bashing threads are SO EXCITING!

I, too, wonder why Olmert hasn't been removed by Qadima in a vote of no-confidence or something. That being said, I don't think he's wagging the dog. Unless you think people launching rockets from Gaza into nearby Jewish towns is no big deal.

I'm sure some of you do. At any rate, a ground "incursion" ought to be a little more targeted than an air raid. Hopefully.

goodbomb 2008-06-06 12:48:32 PM
a person was killed by a mortar in southern israel. despite the fact that israel is a warzone, you can't expect the government to allow random mortar attacks on their land.
