No offense, but considering Henry Rollins hasn't done anything interesting in about 25 years, forgive me if I pass on his thoughts about electronic music. There's a shiatload of bad electronic music, probably more so than any other musical genre. But in the end, I'd much rather kick back and listen to Boards of Canada than listen to another farking spoken word album of Rollins screaming at low hanging fruit.

Henry Rollins' middle name should be "Daddy Issues". This guy's entire personality has been created as a reaction to the things he hates. I can't farking stand people like that.

Full disclosure: I'm a Daft Punk fan.

I've yet to see why everyone fellates Henry Rollins so damn much. Dude comes off like just another macho jackass, except with a slightly above average vocabulary. Hell, he wasn't even the best frontman for Black Flag.

sigdiamond2000:

You're wrong. Rollins himself never did shiat that was remotely interesting. He was, however, in a band once with a guy who did interesting things(Gnaibunn). Rollins was just along for the ride. Hell, did he even write anything with Black Flag?

NO, ROllins didnt write anything for black flag, it was all Gnaibunn`s baby, he did contribute lyrics, but frankly, i agree with the other guy: he was not even the best singer in black flag and their best songs (almost all of them) were already written when he joined...

I liked black flag sense of humor "gimme gimme" "tv party" ect...

but when Rollins joined, the lyrics got all broody and they got too serious for their own good

but for a good Rollins-era Black Flag, check out "Slip it in" ... the guitar is awesome

Oh yeah, and Alive 2007 by Daft Punk is 10x better than anything Henry Rollins has ever been associated with. At least 10x.

And he doesn't know jack shiat about techno, house, trance or any other electronic music.

I can only take so much.

Oh get off it. I'm not going to defend Rollins, but Daft Punk is one of the weakest excuses for house music there is. They are annoying and overly simplistic. They slap a "quirky" video onto it and you annoying little dribble heads who don't know one damn thing just eat it up! How farking lame can you get?! It's more major label garbage, but instead of some farkwit plastic surgery sculpted female singer it's a couple of guys in robot suits. Oh how clever.

Look, you like it? Have fun. Enjoy it. But don't start acting like it's the best damn thing in the world, 'cos it ain't. And the real underground heads just shrug their shoulders and leave you to your kiddie tunes. You're worse than the happy hardcore punters. At least they know they are being ridiculous with all their shenanigans.

People who sit there and cite Daft Punk, Tiesto, Oakenfold, van Dyk, Moby, etc. are the ones who, as you put it, don't know jack shiat about techno, house, trance or any other electronic music. Don't bother saying their music "grooves like no other" if you the only music you ever bought came from Best Buy in the form of a compact disc.

Get some perspective, then if you still like Daft Punk, you're damn entitled. Until then, please stop bashing Rollins, who's accomplished a hell of a lot more than you ever have.

MikoSquiz 2008-06-03 11:03:56 PM
Dude, Harder Better Faster Stronger is basically a funky four-minute keyboard solo. That's not quite the same thing as a three-note loop.

Also, Henry Rollins isn't actually a musician. He's a writer who happened to do some of his writing for purposes of shouting it tunelessly over some guys playing music, back in the day. I mean, he's cool and all, but he has the actual musical skills of a Chia Pet.

Scientician 2008-06-03 11:19:21 PM

Please tell me you are kidding... I saw them in L.A. last year and the pyramid/light show thing was insane.

His rant on dj's kind of surprising to me. It sounds like a lot of the bullshiat arguments people use to disregard the validity of hip hop music which is weird considering that Rollins seems to be pretty down with a lot of hip hop...I've caught his show from time to time and I've seen chuck d, jurassic 5 and DJ Z-trip on there as guests. Plus the dude was an unlockable character in one of those def jam wrestling games.

Then again, I don't really know too much about techno music and if there are any fundamental differences in the role of the dj in the genre

seabass242 2008-06-04 01:19:20 AM
What do you mean same 3 notes? Daft Punk just samples other music. You will find more samples on a Daft Punk album than on Paul's Boutique.

I'm down with some new Daft Punk. They have some good cuts. What Rollins fails to comprehend, and incidentally what most people who haven't immersed themselves into the electronic music genre fail to grasp....is that techno is a sub-component of electronic music. His position would be like saying nikelback sucks(they do)...and therefore so does all rock and roll.

There is great electronic music out there...jazz infused, soul infused, house infused, hip-hop infused, and everything in between. Rollins may like to listen to music that drives him to F**k on the floor and break sh*t, but that's not me, man. I like to listen to music that sunsets my mind, make love under cool sheets, and listen to piercing soulful horns laid to a steady beat. But that's me.

DJ f**ckhead....roflmao

peeny bunslinger [TotalFark] 2008-06-04 03:46:07 AM
I think Daft Punk are some of the most talented musicians out there right now. Few artists combine samples with recorded material and tweak it through filters and computers quite like they can. Take a look inside their pyramid they use during their live shows:

www.tranism.com

That's 4 Moog Voyagers, two touch-screen MIDI controllers, shiatloads of mixers and triggers all hooked up to a bunch of supercomputers running everything. And they do it all dressed in farking robot suits. And they trigger the light shows from the stage as well. That's some virtuoso shiat.
