(Some Guy) Obvious "Emo is not a suicide cult" No, no it's not. It is however a cop-out for gender-confused males to wear make-up and put on girls jeans -- and it gives fat girls an "edge" over skinny blondes by dying their hair pink   (newstatesman.com) divider line 137

Yes. White culture has to try to "find itself" when in it's youth.
It won't, but it must try.

Kome: It is a cult of stupid.

A cult of lack of personality? Emo back when I was in high school was defined by Dashboard Confessional and emo kids were just whiney dorks, which is pretty standard for high school kids. Now emo kids are even whinier dorks who dress like goth kids but don't have the "fark everything" nihilistic attitude that made goth kids vaguely cool from the outside.

So, adding it up you get depressed + poor fashion + "My parents/the world just don't understand!" = every single 14-20 year old ever. Emo is just one way that they congregate and perpetuate this attitude far past when they should've grown out of it.

I'm old. Get your boombox off my lawn.

Maybe it's because of the way I swing, but I find (slender) emo guys not that bad looking.

The girls, on the other hand. .reminds me of the "goth" culture when I was in high school. There is no such thing as a slender emo girl. They are all overweight, abhor exercise, and wear that pleather shiat from Hot Topic and just looking at it makes me thing "god how badly must she STINK from those horrible fabrics?"

I'm going to my room.

After I text my friends on my cell phone, I'm going to sit behind my laptop with wifi and order some music for my ipod. Maybe I'll kill a little time on the Wii. Then I'm going to drive down to the mall and buy a bunch of black clothes on my mum's credit card.

Usually I just hang out with friends smoke a spliff and buy a $4.00 cup of coffee, but I'm too depressed today. My life sucks.

this. although, i'd argue saves the day and get up kids were the defining emo bands. strangely enough, it was a common transition for the punk rock kids to get into that stuff. they went from being angry to being angry but sad about girls.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-06-03 01:37:17 PM
I don't really mind youth culture, I am over 21 so it doesn't matter to me what kids are wearing/doing/whatever these days. I just wish that the women would stop getting those Garth Algar haircuts with the sh*tty Chrissy Hynde dye jobs because it's seriously detracting from me staring at their tits and wondering how moist they get when you rub their vagina through their tights. That hair is the stirrup pants of this generation.

Yep. That's about where I was at that time. Other notable bands were Jets to Brazil, Further Seems Forever, Poison the Well, Indian Summer, Alkaline Trio, Texas is the Reason and American Football.

I have no clue what the scene is about now. It's like the indie scenes, emo scenes, and goth scenes all blended together.

Emo is someone that sits around Starbucks, drinking $6 Latte, listening to Dashboard on their iPod, complaining about how much their life sucks. Then they drive away in the modern VW Bug complaining about how much their parents suck.

Common clothing is black dyed hair, black fingernail polish, wearing everything from hot topic.

/Am I close?

True. But I do wonder sometimes how what trend or lifestyle I would have followed if I wasn't black. I'd hate to admit it but I probably would have been goth. But no, I'm black and most of my friends were black so I was hip hop. Didn't matter that I actually listened to a lot of alternative during the time too, had to be hip hop. Oh well, it was a good time in hip hop and I obviously can't get that pale anyway.

Lot of pressure in high school to be what others expect you to be when I was there. Thankfully, as I watch my little brother and sister go through high school, I think that pressure is starting to fade away as they seem to change styles weekly without any reservations.

/Still thinks goth chicks are hot

I have a question not a comment

emo was from goth which was from punk and grunge? that abotu right?

Its all not to much different other then labels. I don't mind emo much, HATE scremo though... a frined told me recently its apperently big in Seattle *shudder*

mandyer 2008-06-03 01:56:22 PM
I don't know why but in the last month or so the local CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX affiliates here have all run teasers on tv and the radio for various little bits of "in depth, hard hitting" reporting on the emo thing. It's annoying but funny when one of them shows a fat little middle school kid in the commercial, face scrambled, saying something along the lines of "at first it was like, cool, and then like, I did this to my arm with an eraser until it started to bleed, and then we like, talked about how stupid life is, and like..."

Funnier part is that these little farkers started popping up when I was in high school and the news geniuses are just now getting to them. I kind of like seeing the little bastards in public. I get a kick out of making eye contact with kids like them and the goth kids and pretty much anyone else whose dress (or music) angers me (you too mister "I don't own a pair of pants or a shirt that isn't three sizes too big" black guy) and just shaking my head. I like the quizzical look I get in return. It's cute how they think they look acceptable.
