Last album worth buying.

Ouch! I was gonna buy this, but now I guess I will just steal it from somewhere.

Heretic: Pinkerton does rock hard!

Wasn't the Green album after Pinkerton? Maybe it wasn't worth buying, but that was definately worth burning.

I think the Red Album is pretty strange. I don't dislike it, per se, but I do find a lot of the songwriting either bizarre or lazy.

I certainly wouldn't pay for it...

The Third Man 2008-06-03 01:24:43 PM
It's not going to be worse than Make Believe..."Pork and Beans" is their best single since Pinkerton, not that that's saying a lot. So the one half-decent song on the new album is more than they had on their whole last album.

If Weezer had broken up after Pinkerton, we'd still be talking about them as one of the great bands of the 90's, maybe of all time. But their recent stuff..."bizarre and lazy songwriting" isn't the half of it. It's just jaw-droppingly bad. Like "stuff an 80's hair-metal band would put on B sides" bad.

I was never a really a hardcore fan beyond owning some albums and after the song "Hash pipe" came out I thought they were kinda' being pretty mercenary by writing a heavier song that referenced drug culture but then I saw a part of their internet viral marketing campaign and I knew that they were writing to sell units to a demographic. Which is fine, they have to eat and they never really stood there with their fists in the air and decried the marketing machine but there just seems to be a level of crassness and cynicism about their fans to their music now that is kind of insulting.

You read my mind. Thats the first thing I thought of when I saw the link.

People actually think the stuff after Pinkerton is worth anything? I bought the Green Album when it came out with a faint hope it would be good. After listening to it maybe 3 times I said fark it.

It made me like the band even less.

Blink182 is another good example. Loved them until Enema of the State. Then the hipsters went apeshiat over them and they lost their appeal to me.

I really liked that band too.

Thanks Mr. Helpful. No one would ever know where they could not pay the band for their artistic output without you saying that.

On a totally unrelated subject, has anyone been reading the regular "Popless" feature on the AV Club (latest one here (new window)). it's really good...I've learned about a lot of great music from that guy

Beverly Hills! That's where I want to be!

/sad.

When Matt left the band it all went downhill.

Hash Pipe will always be my favorite Weezer song, that probably makes them sellouts or something.

Exactly, it's almost like they went out of their way to make crappy music.

I bought it at lunch today and enjoyed it. It's as if they said, "sorry for everything since Pinkerton." I did like Maladroit, though.

Haha, yeah, what's up with that? There you were trying to show THE INTERNET how cool you are because you can download an album for free and this guy comes and makes fun of you for it because basically everyone with any computer knowledge knows about usenet.

Jesus, what a troll he is and look at that user name? I bet he thinks he's clever with an offensive word in it.

*COUGH* ASK YOUR FRIEND TO BORROW IT AND TAPE IT OR "BURN" IT TO A CD OR YOUR MP3 PLAYER *COUGH*

You and me, bro, we're posting bros for life. We are going to take down the man and let THE INTERNET know we are doing it.

I don't think it's offensive to exterminate sock monkeys.

Perfect Situation and This Is Such A Pity are two of my favorite Weezer songs. Suck it, haters.

If the so-called "Red Album" really is an elaborate goof on an all-too-forgiving fan base, that doesn't make Weezer's newest worst album any less insipid.
I don't think this guy liked it very much.

thomps [TotalFark] 2008-06-03 03:47:32 PM
I just bought the new album to pay my respects to one of the first bands to ever make me really like rock music, but I can't see myself listening to this shiat more than once or twice.

Overall, I enjoy the album.

Weezer, to me, follows a simple formula with their albums. They put in 2 or 3 really kick ass songs, and the rest just kind of floats around not really to be payed attention to.

I enjoy Pork and Beans and I think The Greatest Man That Ever Lived is epic, but after awhile the whole thing gets tiring. If I like something I can listen to it over and over and over and over and...you get the point. But with Weezer, I recognize that it's good stuff, but I stop caring at some point.

OMGlookatthat_HUGE_P_HOLE 2008-06-03 05:41:13 PM
I highly doubt a "band" that sucks as bad as they do is capable of putting out an album worse than they already have. They're just all horrible. A plane crash would have done this band much justice before anyone had ever heard of them.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-06-03 06:05:44 PM
There's only ONE "red" album that i consider worth having:
"Red" by King Crimson, 1974.

that is all.

Um, WTF? Blink 182 were the ultimate munter-beer drinking band. Hipsters stayed well clear of them - as difficult as it was, every covers band in the country played them non stop from about '98 - '02.

I was never a big fan of pinkerton. But I liked the green album and the blue album. so maybe I'll like the red. Maybe i like colors. Idk.

A Farewell To A Perfect Score 2008-06-03 08:09:50 PM
There's no doubt the Blue album and Pinkerton were absolutely phenomenal. Anyone saying otherwise has no valid opinion in this here thread [in my opinion, at least.]

There were parts of the Green album and Maladroit I liked, and I even liked 1 song off of Make Believe ["Perfect Situation"]. The new album, to me, seems like it should have been released between Pinkerton and the Green album. Some parts of it have a really cool, old-school Weezer vibe a la Pinkerton, but a good chunk of it really IS boring and sounds like Green album/Maladroit/Make Believe b-sides. I think "Thought I Knew" is a pretty cool song, but then again it was written for and by the other guitarist's band, so it's not TECHNICALLY a Weezer song. I like "The Angel & The One" a lot, though. One of the better Weezer songs, especially in the past 10 years.

/all my opinion. No attacks, farkers!

Late to the show, but I'm sensin a little bit of win right there.

If you decide to check it out, make sure you get the deluxe version. The songs "Miss Sweeny" and "Pig" are great.

I'm a die hard Weezer fan, and I'll buy anything they put out. I admit, they haven't done anything that compares to The Blue Album or Pinkerton. What band is putting stuff out right now though, that does equal the greatness of those two? The Red Album is probably a close third, and the song "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" kicks all sorts of unholy ass.

/ =w=

Bigsigh 2008-06-03 11:45:02 PM
I've only bought pinkerton, I burned the blue and green albums.. and totally gave up on maladroit and make believe.

But, i've never missed a concert they played in my area since 7th grade. And I know the words to pretty much every song they ever play in concert.

They were on my windows 95 CD and i fell in love. I was 9 years old. They were the first band I ever liked that my mom didn't tell me about. So whatever they do for me is golden.

Well, then your a tool for not liking a band because it went mainstream.

You seem to have confused "hipsters" and "stereotypical pop-punk teenagers before emo was huge"
