Oh man... the major record labels are so farked. It's a catch-22. Essentially the only thing they're still any good at is marketing. So if they succeed at mass-marketing an artist, the artist has name recognition and no longer needs the major label. They can ditch the record label and make more money as an independent without having to try and sell 8 billion records to recoup all that overhead cost.
