The song is damn catchy, but I'll be surprised if the number of comments for this submission reaches the double digits.

Sometimes you can't help but love the catchy pop tunes you'd usually hate.

Complete waste of 15 seconds (before I turned it off)

Thought this was going to be about Karen Duffy. It isn't. Our loss.

I almost beat you. I could only make it to 13 seconds though.

Isn't this just Amy Whorehouse in a blonde wig?

NIce-nicess. I'm lovin' the retro vibe. Nice hook, interesting voice, cool video... This is win-win all around!

Literally, it is ON FIRE!

DarkJohnson: Isn't this just Amy Whorehouse in a blonde wig?

In a sense, you're right; soulish-voice doing the retro thing. Take two.
However there is something about Winehouse that I just don't like; I think she's a little tone deaf and I don't get the hype.
But this comes off as "better" in my mind. YMMV.

She's reverse or rather bizarro amy winehouse / ripoff of dusty springfield.

Yes, because Amy Winehouse is unique, and nobody else ever sounded like her before.

Jesus Christ people, there actually was music before you were born that wasn't Rush or Led Zeppelin.

Sooo..... I clicked on the link with an open mind. I was not expecting it to be anything decent...... I made it to 10 seconds before turning it off.... Yes it was that bad. That song is now in the running for the worst pop song in the last ten years. Also the only thing retro about the song was the clothes and hair styles. I say that because at one point in time if you sang a song as bad as that the general public would drag you away in handcuffs and beat you in the public square with some sort of heavy object....

\Not making that up.

Duh. Don't be deliberately obtuse to the point. Of course I know that and both you and I know that Winehouse was brought back that sound to the mainstream and this Duffy chick is another music company's response to that. My personal feelings are that "sound" should be left dead and buried back in the 60's.

Not that it was great or anything, but if you think that's even remotely close to being the worst pop song in the last 10 years, then I suggest some exposure to Gwen Stefani is in order. Nothing, I mean, NOTHING could ever be as bad as the collection of auditory feces that is her solo career.

No it was that bad. Say what you want to about Gwen Stefani. That song was really incredible. I still don't believe people will not only defend the merits of the song but will also purchase it. Honestly I think that in six months most Farkers will be so sick of hearing it, that they will start dying of starvation. Not because they have lost the will to live but from not being able to enter a supermarket from fear of hearing it played over the loud speakers.

\I also think it is funny when someone over reacts to me over reacting
\\Really now isn't that what makes the world go around?
\\\Because it couldn't possibly be El Freaks taste in popular music.

Wow, an open mind for all of ten seconds?!? Impressive. Was that consecutively or did that need to be spaced out?

Whether it's drawing on Martha and the Vendelas or not it's still pop, and will not be worth it's weight in gold, but it may just point some kid whose idea of music is Britney, into looking and opening their horizon. Even a bit.

Other than that it's not a bad re-imaging of what has been done, now let's see where it takes us this time.

I have heard much, much worse that that. Flo-rida anyone? Rihanna's remake of Madonna's take a bow?

rbabe1485 2008-06-02 01:13:25 PM
Rocky, It was not a re-image of a previous era. The song was horrible because of how it was produced. I am referring to the samples they chose to put on a loop. The way they altered the singers voice to sound as if it was recorded with outdated equipment but in fact all it accomplished was to make her voice sound nasal and the notes flat. The fact the lyrics were horrible, the fake band sad and the idea already used almost yearly for the last 40 damn years. The only place this song will go is the One hit wonders section of the dollar rack in the local cd store. Now understand I do not honestly think it is the worst pop song of the last 10 years, but it is bad. I did listen to the whole song and was just making a jokey joke.

Get it now Rocky?

Balrog1 2008-06-02 01:28:34 PM
Is this song a classic? No way, but I think it was better than 95% of the stuff I hear on the radio anymore. I don't see why all the hate.

Interesting voice, as long as she doesn't Autotune.

The song makes me want to go on a 13 hour Mad Men marathon.

Lot of ignorance in this thread, not surprising though as it's not Led Zep or Rush we're talking about.

Duffy started work on this album in 2003, writing the material with Bernard Butler (from Suede). Winehouse broke through in the meantime, but they'd started the album beforehand.

I-IV-V-I,

I-V-IV-I,

I-IV-I-V-I,

drum break.

Rinse, Repeat, Wipe hands on Pants

Done.

/kinda boring but it sells records

Not sure of the hate for this. This is good, solid white, english RnB/soul. Sure it sounds "retro" but so what. Duffy has a definite Ronnie Spector vibe going and it is a very catchy three and half minute song. I'm glad this stuff isn't dead and buried and is making its way around again.

craigscomputer 2008-06-02 07:51:22 PM
.....Ben E. King on the other hand should sue the writer of this song for lifting the bass line off of "Stand by Me"

I think your chord progressions are a little off. I don't hear a a I-IV-V-1. The verses are 8 bars of I followed by V, IV, I. The chorus is a standard 12 bar blues: I, I, I, I, IV, IV, I, I, V, IV, I, I.

This doesn't suck!

Sure, she doesn't have a great GREAT voice, but the song ain't bad.

It gets better as it goes, for all you 10-second-turner-offers.

Retro R&B/Soul/Blues. What's wrong with that?
