The cop was heard to say, "Hey, I'm a douchebag, but even I feel queasy around those crazy MADDerf*ckers!"

This is a bunch of garbage, it's not okay to fabricate a story like this in order to "teach" people a lesson.

Great. Next week, they will come in saying susie has been violently raped, and then later tell them it was just to raise awareness about rape. yes, this should all end well.

seriously farked up.

my ex-husband was tangentially involved in one of those accident reconstruction things, but it did NOT involve lying to children and having other children dress up as ghosts.

/it did involve a helicopter and blocking off a street, though, which was kind of cool.

Grrr 2008-06-01 03:27:30 PM
"Every 15 Minutes" used to be an multiple-day program, with everybody knowing about it (and a mock accident / arrest) well in advance.

I would think laying the rose on the seat was over the top...

Last I heard, the statistics had improved quite a bit, closer to "every 30 minutes"...

When forewarned, these hijinks might shake up the invulnerable can't-happen-to-me mindset a little bit. It's still manipulative, but I really don't know how else to get through to the kidlets that they're mortal.

HagarTheHorrible [TotalFark] 2008-06-01 03:36:43 PM
I'd love to see a class get wind of something like this beforehand and pull something like laughing hysterically as the cop puts the rose down.

Or he'll come in and start firing red paint-ball blanks at students to make them aware of the dangers of drug steroid abuse

Or they'll do a class lock down and frantically announce there's a shooter down the hall.

These things are going to ulitmately be like D.A.R.E. Wind up encouraging it more than discouraging.

Hmmm... saying something to a group that causes panic, distress, and a state of fear. Recalling my history lessons correctly, this is actually a violation of the 1st Amendment, right along the lines of crying 'fire' in a crowded theater.

I don't care if the whole thing was put out to 'teach people a lesson'. It's complete bullshiat, and the people who thought this plan through and played a part in it should be castrated in one form or another.

This reminds me of that campus where a cop ran into the class pretending to be a school shooter and lined everyone up against the wall. Apparently it was supposed to be a "publicized drill." But since they only publicized it by way of a list of students who signed up to be part of the "cell phone text message alert system". only a handful of the class even got the message, not including the teacher. Scarelarity ensued.

No you are very wrong. It is okay to teach people a lesson with something like this. A bastard that drank too much took the life of my child and if one person will not drink because of that lesson, then it was a job well done.

Anyone that drinks and drives deserves to feel the pain of what my family and millions of others have suffered at the hands of pathetic drunk drivers.

Rodeodoc 2008-06-01 06:38:57 PM
Would have been funny if the alleged deceased then walked into the room and shouted that he had risen. Also would make the whole gesture pretty well meaningless. "Look, you don't die when you drink and drive after all. There's good old Chad with the rose in his teeth."

they did this when i was in highschool a decade ago.. also parked a smashed up drunk wreck on the lawn among other things

honestly, its effective. kids need to see the world as it is because they think they're invincible and that its always someone else. life is fleeting, and its good to be reminded of that every once in a while

It wouldn't really violate the first amendment, although it might not be protected by it. Intentional infliction of emotional distress seems like a good cause of action for some of the more affected students. Usually IIED gets thrown out at the door, but this was a particularly deplorable and extreme situation and the goal was clearly to cause emotional distress (otherwise what's the point).

WizardofToast 2008-06-01 06:40:46 PM
I'll bet my allowance it wouldn't really make a difference to the students.

I remember that one. As a teacher I don't know what my reaction would be, but I've certainly gone through the scenario in my head a few times and imagine I'd probably try to do something. If it involved hitting a cop-in-terrorist-drag with a chair or stabbing him with a pocket knife I don't know what the public response would be. In this case, with the MADD cop, once I found out it was a cop I guess I'd call him a douchebag and tell him to quit farking with kids who are in the middle of life's biggest hormone surge and are easily pushed over the edge.

I also might end one thought with a '.' and then continue to the next.
Maybe next time.

My condolences for your loss, but once again, this is a bullshiat way of teaching kids the lesson on not drinking and driving. Its the same as having a bunch of masked gunmen rush into the classroom, force everyone into a corner, then threaten to kill them with assault rifles.

The lesson? If you see anyone on a school campus with a weapon, let the authorities know. Sure, the kids will learn a lesson, but in a farked up way. Treating the students like adults, and having actual conversations with them will drive the lesson home more than the fear-mongering you condone.

TheJoe03 [TotalFark] 2008-06-01 06:43:08 PM
Have y'all seriously never heard of these things? They make up a mock-DUI thing or whatever, and some kids walk around in white facepaint and act like they are dead or something. It was cool by my book cause it prevented school work from happening that day. You guys act like this is the worse thing that ever happened, who cares, its a freaking assembly!

while i feel sorry for your loss, i also feel sorry that you are such a dumbass. making people believe someone close to them is dead is farking ridiculous. drunk driving is wrong, stupid, moranic, but so was this stunt.

Are you kidding? We live in a culture that's going broke, both economically and socially, because the ends justifies the means.

Besides, they're mothers! Fear-based training is just part of the job.

/sarcasm

Yes, this was a remarkably stupid stunt, on par with PETA trying to scare kindergarten kids away from dairy products. But, as with PETA, MADD has become increasingly polarized and fanatical - they were once a good idea, but are now out of control.

Hmmm...based on the PSAs on network TV, I thought the way to teach about the dangers of DUI was to show 25 seconds of grainy home video footage of a pretty white girl at a birthday party, then fade to a black and white placard that says she was killed by a drunk driver.
