So the predictions tend to be gloomy: some analysts see a shift toward regional trade, and even a major reversal of globalization itself, as rising transport costs make it too expensive to ship many kinds of goods long distances.

Maybe there is a God. I don't want this globalized socialist utopia and I'm not alone.

I don't know how people in other countries handle the rising prices since they pay an assload more than us already.

It is nice to see more people get into public transportation though

It's just simple math, mang. There are too many people and not enough to go around. Globalization requires an endless abundant source of energy that the world doesn't have. The result then will be, dismantle America (and any western country that has anything) and spread it around. Well, when the ideal means taking from you instead of getting free stuff...oh snap!!

You mean you prefer a 30$ ceramic bowl made by a Western artisan in your neighborhood to a 3$ plastic bowl made by a little brown girl in India chained to a table? How un-American.

Once the idiots realize that they can't sell their house for as much as they are or charge the rent they're charging maybe prices will drop. But I predict we'll have a hard time adjusting. I don't think any current americans can even fathom the idea of stuff going down to its real value.

"Globalization" and "socialism" are about as opposite as you can get. The driving force behind globalization is to open up every market to worldwide competition. The drive to close up local and national markets from international competition, on the grounds of "sovereignty," is far more "socialist."

Maybe the real value of a real bowl that would last 15 years is closer to 30$, and we just have no clue because of the "glut of objects" our culture has been suffused in. We throw away more shoes in a year than our ancestors ever owned in their entire lives. Are they less well made or are we more careless because "things" are everywhere?

Well, simple - but not math.

Your claim that "there's not enough to go around" is a falacy known as artificial scarcity.

You don't think there is enough land to grow enough food for everyone on this planet and more? Are there enough hands to build all the goods these people would need?

The idea that we should be shipping things all over the world and wasting energy never made sense - except to a society where waste and gluttony is acceptable.

By the way, I thought your call for everyone to register as an independent was brilliant but you would need to couple that with legislation that would allow independents to vote in one primary or another for it to be really effective.

Adjustments. The benefits out weigh the adjustments. I know there's plenty to go around, it's warring ideologies that are getting in the way and status quo. We have all the same old shiat man has been dealing with from one civilization to the next. Everyone can't be taken care of, that's just reality. It's dog eat dog and that's our species. I just think this notion of globalization and utopia is fanciful at best.

People are gonna start fighting over natural resources soon enough.

Tell that to my wife who just returned from grocery shopping where she paid $1.39 for a loaf of store brand white bread. That is double the price a year ago when it was $.69/loaf.

Inflation is going to be devastating to senior citizens as well as most hourly workers who didn't see a hefty raise in their paychecks.

Still that downward adjustment in rent prices is also going to wipe out a lot of property management companies, (right down to the small owner of a three family house) who have based their investment on cash flow.

From a capitalist mindset, there is no such thing as a "real value." A product's value is relative to a given society and market, at a given place and time. An object couldn't have an inherent or natural value outside of what buyers and sellers at the given place and time value it, because all objects are essentially worthless except in the eye of the beholder.

Not to say that I don't agree with what you're getting at, but I'd phrase it differently. It's not that some objects have "real value." It's that we tend to overvalue frivolous things, and as a result, large sectors of Western economies are unsustainable. Starbucks is a brilliant example of this. Coffee serves an important utility for lots of people, but most people don't NEED to drink froofy coffee drinks that cost $4 a cup. And more importantly, even if people WILL drink them, there aren't enough froofy coffee drinkers to support three Starbucks stores on every corner.

Have you considered that, motives aside, it might be a good idea to hang onto some of that stuff?

TinFoilHatMan 2008-06-01 02:30:26 PM
I think the aholes that keep telling us oil is going to be $200.00/bbl should be taken out behind the barn and shot. They talk, people believe, and then the very thing they are concerned about manifests itself because all the speculators rush out to make it happen. A few people end up getting rich while the rest of the world slowly swirls around the bowl.

our own resources, completely tapped and producing max output per day, would still leave us a net importer. we might drop the price per barrel by a dollar or so.
