Maybe it's because they realize they are about to inherit a really farked up world and they know their lives will suck.

Oh, I'm sorry, are these kids being submitted to the 'do or die' theory? You know, like everybody else?

It's like what my old man told me when I was a senior in High School going through the stress of exams:

"Learn to deal with this crap when your young, and you can take on anything when your older. It's not suffering, it's practice."

The only depression that I have sympathy for is chemical imbalances, and I have even met some of those individuals who learned to survive the world.

even feeling that their life is meaningless.

Well, honestly, their lives are meaningless, everyone's is. The world will orbit on no matter who lives, dies or is never born. Their lives should matter to them, and perhaps their parents, but other than that the question of the meaning of life has been pretty much relegated to the dustbin since the 1950s.

Why does life have to have meaning? Why? Because of the farking Greeks. The Eastern Buddhists (especially Chan/Zen) always had a leg up on Western philosophy in this regard.

I don't think you need to know someone living in an unstable society and still has 8 or 9 children to know that they are ignoring concerns regarding overpopulation. It is possible to reasonably determine someone's attitude towards on issue by evaluating their actions.

Do you really think this? "Really farked up?" While the world has it's problems, if you live in a developed nation your prospects for a long and happy life with a comfortable standard of living are far better tomorrow than they were say 400 years ago.

Fark is just a cross-section of "people" and most people are idiots.

Problem: Dog, cat, ferret, monkey, rat, or other animal shows signs of anxiety, stress, or depression.
Likely Cause: Improper environment and care.
Solution: Fix inadequate environmental factors immediately.

Problem: Human being shows signs of anxiety, stress, or depression
Likely Cause: Genetic chemical imbalance.
Solution: Administer medication daily.

Admitting that our farked-up, materialistic, concrete-jungle, workaholic society is producing these mental illnesses would require far too much responsibility.

I agree that the "chemical imbalance theory" may lack substantiation; however, when a person is seriously depressed, something has changed in how his or her brain functions, and no amount of willpower can overcome it.

It's like walking on a balance beam and you start to wobble. If you're mildly depressed because of the things life's thrown at you, you can use psychological techniques to steady yourself and stay on the beam. But at a certain point of depression, no amount of waving your arms will keep you on the beam and you're going to fall off. True depression may not be caused by serotonin imbalances, but its a very real organic illness.

Once upon a time there were three billy goats, who were to go up to the hillside to make themselves fat, and the name of all three was "Gruff."

On the way up was a bridge over a cascading stream they had to cross; and under the bridge lived a mikaloyd, with eyes as big as saucers, and a nose as long as a poker.

Oh, I agree with this part. I wasn't disputing that depression is indeed authentic, but only mentioning that the chemical imbalance theory as currently presented in popular culture is mostly a media and pharmaceutical advertising creation.
