Wow the film vault? That's cool and sad. Cool because well, it may mean a change in the film industry. It will be sad because it may mean some original tapes to the classic movies are gone.

LEAD: Universal Studios received a bomb threat only 30 minutes before a fire leveled a block of movie sets and caused an estimated $2.5 million damage Friday night, the authorities said.

Universal Studios received a bomb threat only 30 minutes before a fire leveled a block of movie sets and caused an estimated $2.5 million damage Friday night, the authorities said.

The blaze forced the evacuation of the studio's European Street set, where about 200 people were watching the taping of a new television series. There were no injuries.

'We are trying to figure out whether there was or was not a bomb,' said Sgt. John Andrews of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.

SmackLT: The film vault is on fire.

That's very bad news - but haven't they heard of off-site storage? And if they're storing celluloid you'd think they'd have an extremely good fire suppressant system.

Don't be so naive. It'll mean a change in fire safety measures. If you think this is the end of the likes of "Dude, Where's My Car?" or "Indiana Jones and the Lame CG-Laden Movie for mo' Cash-Cash," then you are obviously delusional. Expect more garbage superhero movies and "National Treasure VIII" to help pay for the reconstruction.

SevenYearHawk 2008-06-01 10:09:52 AM
if it is the film vault, it will only be recent movies or television shows ...

All the Classics are safe and sound far below the state of Kansas:

Going underground began decades ago. Film and television studios recognized that our uniquely cool and dry atmosphere, the distance from natural disaster and metropolitan exposure, and our location 58 floors below ground, were ideal for long term archiving of movie films. We eliminated high warehouse lease rates as well as reduced labor and utility costs. Our film vaults are void of anything that challenges asset protection at surface level, including seismic activity, fires, and intrusion.

Just sad to see something go up in flames. For a moment there, I thought it was an alien space ship reeking havoc onto Los Angeles, but that was a scenario from Sim City 2000. I wonder if Babs is alright?

Ewww. Universal has rights to a LOT of stuff, and at least a decent portion of it is not in distribution nor has it been for quite some time. We could actually be looking at a serious permanent loss of certain works.

/Universal is dumb as hell if they don't have backups stored offsite.
//But they wouldn't be the first, last, or only corporation to do something stupid to save money.

You'd think some of these idiots could take a film school class on camerawork. Maybe the fire is ironic. Only folks that look like they knew what they were doing is the BBC.

nstutsman [TotalFark] 2008-06-01 10:17:10 AM
it seems to me like I remember a big fire back in the early 80's, mostly a brush fire on the lot, but they lost a lot of stuff back then too, one of them being the original Psycho house.

Didn't see anything about it on Wiki though.
