I joined Facebook at a student's urging in the first place (as a lark). I didn't think anyone of my generation was on it. And they weren't at the time, but now they are. So I have students on my friend list (it's pretty much the only way a kid can contact me outside of school, so it can be useful for them. Every so often I get wall posts with "Miss! Is band cancelled tomorrow??").

Limited profile is my friend. But I have almost nothing questionable even on my full profile.

I can't say the same for many of my colleagues, however. One teacher's profile photo is of herself in a bikini. Another two staff members have "Super Walls" (or "Fun Walls" or whatever it is. I block them, so I really can't keep 'em straight) where their friends had posted pictures of naked men. And yes, they all have students added as friends.

Because most of modern American society thinks Teachers are Substitute Parents, they expect full line-toeing super-serios-biznes at all times.

No, you can't have a personal life
Not yours!

I locked down my profile when the conditions changed. I was cool with only .edu email addys being used to sign up. Never comfy enough to share my phone number, but as soon as it opened up to everybody with a wallet and teenage-girl like free time, I did some housecleaning and don't really visit.

To me, it's nothing more than a convenient contact method for former classmates.

Social networking is more of a drinking hobby to me.

/It saves the environment by using less energy!

Exactly. Why are teachers held to a higher standard when nobody else is? Yes yes, some idiot will pull out the "they're a role model for THE CHILDRENS!". If so, then pay them what they're worth, and stop loading them with ridiculous requirements.

Nobody has to do anything. However many employers will look to see if you have a profile on myspace or facebook and if you have pictures weed leaves and other nonsense and the other person applying for the job has a plain profile or no profile at all, they will probably go with the other person. Everyone is free to self disclose any information on the internet, but they shouldn't be surprised when someone sees it and passes judgement on them.

My coach does fairly regular monitoring of the team's facebook profiles, so we have to keep it clear of pictures with alcohol and the like, even if we're over 21. The football team is actually barred from having accounts from their coach (well, under Carr they were. Not sure about Rich), which I found interesting.

I keep my profile pretty clean anyway, partly because I have a lot of my former students who joined when they let in High Schoolers and I felt weird about that for some reason. Besides, job recruiters are supposedly digging deeper and deeper at prospects, so couldn't hurt to keep it sanitary.

/nothing on social sites is private, ever. Always assume this.

FTA: His page also lets people take quizzes with questions like "What's Your Secret Sexual Fantasy?"

So, in other words he added a quiz to his profile, which randomly presents 5 out of 2000 quizes, and it just happened to get a gem, instead of 'Whats your favourite fruit' or 'Whats your favourite color'? Youd think if they were going to get someone to write an article relevant to facebook, they'd be able to find a person who knows the slightest thing about it.

People are idiots if they put compromising stuff about themselves online. They all have a good firing coming to them. Serves them right for being idiots.

Lesson: If you put anything about yourself online, your employer can see it, or a potential employer can see it and not hire you.

Trust me students do not care if they see their teachers drunk. When I was in HS a couple of teachers went to the friday night football game drunk. Monday comes by and it was all over the school, none of the students thought "ZOMG THEY ARE BAD", instead we laughed it off and made fun of the teachers.

In my new job in professional staffing I was informed that several companies now use, as a part of their screening process, a Google search. That was not a huge surprise.

What WAS a surprise was that the first 5 pages become a part of your permanent file. So even if your name isn't on the page that might be embarrassing, a link to something posted by someone else that uses your name and shows where you can be found could very well be in your file. And if someone in HR, or maybe a boss who doesn't like you, has a little free time...

And heaven help you if someone else has set up a page dedicated to trashing your reputation or one alleging to be yours.

What teachers are being paid is insulting, and not nearly what they should be making. I think it's outrageous for you to claim otherwise. Maybe you're not a teacher so it doesn't affect you, you selfish selfish man, but teachers deserve more than thirty grand a year to assist in the development of the friggin' future. It's worth as much as doctor. There's a cultural stigma to teachers that I find reprehensible. They are not second class citizens. They do not get paid enough to be told how to live in their off hours, or be judged because they do not act like parents to your precious little snowflake.

Also, if you paid teachers 90,000 a year, you'd attract better teachers.

Also, the school system blows anyway. Nuke it and start over.

Also, no more principals or standardized testing.

The only thing about this that's foolish on the teachers part has nothing to do with them being teachers--if you're a professional, you shouldn't leave something that's incredibly easy to find that will put doubt as to your professionalism. That goes for lawyers and stock brokers too. In that regard, these teachers are kind of clown shoes.

If you're incapable of comprehending the idea of having a life and having sex without posting pictures of either one on a PUBLIC WEBSITE then I think you should see a psychologist about your intimacy issues.

Or don't post it under your real name and occupation. Duh.

Littledogg 2008-06-01 01:26:12 PM
I don't have a problem with teachers drinking or smoking or swearing or spanking. I have a problem with the teacher who is stupid enough to broadcast these things to the world and expect no consequences. My sister told her 6th grade cheerleaders during tryouts that they had to delete their myspace page if they were going to be on her team because she "wanted only mature and respectable members." (She also didn't want pedos stalking them)

Lawyers, doctors and other professionals are also advised not to have these pages for all to see. There is something a bit unnerving about finding the myspace of the doctor that operated on you and seeing nothing but pictures of him high doing shots of tequila.
