Hanna Barbera once planned on making a Dobie Gillis cartoon. The deal fell through and the character designs were used for Scooby Doo.

Predictions:
Anticommie (R)s who will prematurely ejaculate on the way in here to bash teh FAILed commie system

Procommie (D and G)s who will rush in here to blame every president since Kennedy for not supporting the Little Workers Paradise That Could, and who will gush about Castro's splendid healthcare system.

And hopefully people posting pictures of Cuban hotties.

Cubist Robot Party 2008-05-31 10:05:49 PM

I hate to sound all "OMG CAPITALISAM IS TEH AWESOME! COMMIES SUX!", but this quote from the article,

``Don't you think people would prefer to have independence, to have something they can be proud of?'

makes it sound like the ordinary Cuban is ready for some free markets. It would be mutually beneficial for them and the US. Sad as it is, 50 years of economic stagnation has made their country a very desirable destination. Everything is still art deco, the cars are all classic Detroit metal...it really could be a resort paradise.

With awesome food.

This is why pure socialist systems will always fail. When you offer people the ability to sustain themselves indefinitely on government handouts, a lot of people are going to opt out of work. Does that mean that the government should never help the people? Absolutely not. The governments exist at the will of the people, and it should help its people. The line is drawn at indefinite help. Short-term help is and should always be acceptable, long-term help should not be acceptable, exempting of course cases of disabilites.

Capitalism and socialism go hand in hand in rotating doses to make a functional society.

Communism is a failure beyond belief and was since ground zero.

No motivation, no economy. No social spending, no populace willing to support the capitalist infrastructure. Cuba's been a black market since Castro came ashore on Grandma. You can't expect people to work for a currency that's basically worth dried leaves. Somebody remind the fed of this.

Onager 2008-05-31 11:54:09 PM
'I am not going to tell you something different: there are jobs here in Cárdenas where I live. Doing what? Cleaning hospitals for 150 pesos ($7) a month,' said Loraicys, a single mom. ``For 150 pesos, I would rather stay home with my kid. I am willing to work really hard, but not for nothing in return.'

We should just hitch Cuba up to a pickup and drag it next to Mexico. Hell, they even speak Spanish!

They both like monitoring your internet use and phone calls and prosecuting fags too... They also like letting companies pollute and mistreat workers because it's good business.

Though I guess they differ on the value of "Christian" theocracy.

I think a political party in a democracy should aim higher than that, however.

Why should they work...they have the government taking "care" of them, giving them just enough to survive, but that's it.
That is the whole problem with socialism. Why should you bust your ass to make your life better, when it won't do you any good.

The Cuban border is open to most countries. Apparently, if you are American, yr government would prefer that you didn't (and will prosecute you if you do) have dealings there.

PS. The food there really does suck, people are friendly, and support their president even though the system obviously doesn't work. Much like Ohio.

dahmers love zombie: Predictions:

We've known the Cuban system of socialism has been a complete failure for many decades. So I'm not sure why anyone would be in such a rush to bash just because of this one article. It's not like everyone thought Cuba was doing fabulous up until this article was written. The refugees coming here in bathtubs and rafts kinda tell the story. You know?

Here's another clue for you - you don't have to be a far right wing Bush worshiper to realize that Cuba's government is socially oppressive and an economic failure. A lot of democrats and centrists (at least the ones with a shred of common sense) realize it as well. It's kind of like observing that the sky is blue. Doesn't have to be a partisan thing. Except for complete wingnuts like Micheal Moore. And perhaps yourself.
