Well, good. No one is taking changes they might get his entire unit killed trying to keep him out of trouble.

At least he's serving unlike the current occupants offspring.

The reason they put him there is because him being in Iraq would put his entire unit in danger. Seriously. He actually wanted to go to Iraq, but they wouldn't let him.

FTA
Prince William is heading to the azure waters of the Caribbean as part of a two-month deployment in the Royal Navy despite his request to be as close as possible to conflict.

I'm sure they're patrolling the Caribbean occasionally also.

They'd never let him get anywhere near the action - he's second in line to the throne. His life is essentially controlled for him - he has no say... he even has to request permission of the Queen to marry.

Isn't there some sort of regulation that specifically forbids him from being in active combat?

Also, good for him. Not many multi-billionaire kids have any sense of duty, let alone enlist.

I'm a bit squiffy on the whole monarchy thing, but at least they have some understanding of obligation.

FTFA: The assignment beginning Monday will see the second in line to the throne spending much of his time trolling the West Indies aboard the HMS Iron Duke, a frigate on hurricane relief duty and counter-narcotics patrol.

so the prince is a farker?

Submitter is nice with the misleading headline, since he actually requested a dangerous mission.

The Prince knocks up some Jamaican girl and sparks a Royal coverup in 5, 4, 3, 2...

My wife was deployed about a year and a half before I was. Accordingly, in BDUs, she wore a combat patch and I didn't. It made me want to go mental every time we left for work in the morning. I can imagine how Prince #1 feels since he is a pogue and his little ginger brother has been there and done that, except it's probably worse for him since he is teh ghey.

Can't really blame him. I mean, who doesn't like going down that waterfall and then floating serenely between two warring pirate ships? Have you ever stood up in that boat to yell "Yaaarrrrr!" only to hear the voice from that darkened sky say, "All patrons must remain seated at all times or be expelled from the theme park."
Huh? Yeah, I didn't think so.

You don't know what it's like.

-1 for subby... william already did a tour in Afghanistan without complaining about it until some douche reporter reported that he was there which increased the risk to all their troops so they had to pull him out of there.

Braindeath 2008-06-01 01:07:48 AM
British people are still in Iraq? I thought they all left. What the hell is Bush blackmailing people with? If I get ahold of his files, I'm taking over the damn planet.

Wasn't that his brother?

sycraft 2008-06-01 01:13:44 AM
I'm not sure why there's so many people online who have this "Oh he's getting off easy," attitude. No, actually, it makes sense. If he were the son of the active president of the US, I don't know that they'd allow him to serve at all. It's a bad idea to have the children of leaders in places where they could be captured. It could lead to the leader being compromised in their decision making.

That's the reason the secret service protects the family of the president. They want to make sure they are kidnapped.

Well, similar situation here. While the Queen isn't the head of the British government (the Prime Minister is) she is the chief of state and thus an important political figure. So protection of her family is of concern to the British government. This is particularly true for the heir apparent.

I think it shows some stones on this kid's part that he's actually doing military service. He certainly doesn't have to, and has basically had everything handed to him in life. That he's willing to do so says something of his character, even if the assignment isn't dangerous.

It also should be noted that just because you aren't on dangerous duty, doesn't mean you aren't a valuable member of the military.

You joke, but that's essentially what they did with his brother. They said he requested a dangerous assignment, got denied and was forced to do some cupcake duty. Next thing ya know, he turns up in the middle of Afghanistan as a forward air controller. It's a bit more unlikely with William, but I wouldn't be shocked to find out that he spent some time on a ship in the Gulf.

0Icky0 2008-06-01 01:16:24 AM
I_AM_M: Face it, he's got it made in life.

The hell he has.
He is a prisoner with really good food and no buttxes unless he wants it.
After his father goes tits up, and then his gran (in that order), he's basically done for. After that it's all ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling and doing what the Palace goons tell you to do.

Fark that. The younger brother has all the fun.

Kurohone 2008-06-01 01:16:52 AM
I wonder...

After the fuss that happened when his brother's cover was blown, I wonder if the news services over there have been brought back into line re: the Royals. The story does seem almost too perfect...that he requests a dangerous mission, but is rather publically railroaded off to the Caribbean, where, even if they DO run across smugglers (the way the BBC is spinning it) there would be no chance of him in the operation 'if life and limb were in danger' (paraphrasing a RN intereviewed on the BBC tonight).

Anyone else catching the whiff of a feint, the media very loudly telling everyone where he is, while he quietly slips off and goes to do what he wanted to do in the first place?

Bit'O'Gristle [TotalFark] 2008-06-01 01:20:52 AM
Nice. Another spoiled political brat saved from the basic duty that all the general military units are exposed to. But i guess it's ok for the common man's son to die.

But for the rest of his life he'll never be able to go out for a pizza with his buddies, pick up an Asian slut, or walk around his house naked and piss in the sink.

What kind of life is that?

/probably has dental though, so he's got that going for him

Not always true.

The royal family arranged a deal with the media where Prince Harry was allowed to be deployed in Afghanistan (where he actually did see combat) and in return the media wouldn't report about it and make his unit a walking bullseye. I believe it worked for about 3-4 months until someone leaked it and he had to be brought back to the UK.

So, no, playing the cliched angle of "rich men's sons never have to serve" isn't always correct. The Republican frontrunner for president of the United States has a son serving in Iraq as we speak.

r1niceboy 2008-06-01 01:28:35 AM
He's not a marine, so not going to be "In country" ever. If he wants conflict, the best he'll get, until Argentina repairs their dinghy, will be patrolling for drug smugglers. It's not like he's being kept away from harm, it's just that the navy isn't likely to be fighting anyone right now.

RamblingKey 2008-06-01 01:29:13 AM
When McCain wins the election I'm 100% certain McCain's active duty deployed son is going to be put on short rotation and pulled out of combat.

If you don't remember, let me remind you that when John McCain was captured by the Viet Cong Commies, he was used as a POLITICAL hostage because his father was a admiral in the US Navy.

As far as I know, John McCain was the last known offspring of a elite family captured in combat and used as a political propaganda hostage/POW.

Funk Brothers 2008-06-01 01:33:35 AM
He'll probably hit a lot of women that look like Keira Knightley. Then again, the British Royal Crown probably doesn't want any illigiment children come knocking on the door wanting a title.

It's only the cousins that will ever serve on a frontline tour for real(without news blackouts) since they are "expendable"

I do like the fact that they decide his "service" was going to be multi-branch, it sounds like he will have had a taste of everything, from above the sea, to below it.

Any English Farker happen to know if it is possible for a regular person to do that? (all branches, at least?)

I know that in the US once your tour of duty is up you can start over in ONE more service, just not sure if you are allowed to do them all(plus not sure what happens to any rank you may have earned)

eph3k 2008-06-01 02:08:58 AM
Risk the lives of brave soldiers by letting Prince Albert serve in their unit? Bad Idea. Let that mofo cruise Caribbean waters till kingdom come.

If he's to run the monarchy, he should be exposed to a little combat.
