But then there's this: It's time for more than tough talk that never yields results. It's time for a new strategy. There are no better ambassadors for freedom than Cuban Americans. That's why I will immediately allow unlimited family travel and remittances to the island. It's time to let Cuban Americans see their mothers and fathers, their sisters and brothers. It's time to let Cuban American money make their families less dependent upon the Castro regime.

Can we make a fark agreement? That it is reasonable to change your opinion on a subject when it is more than, say, two years?

This is for everyone, of course, not just Obama. Anyone who changes their stance in a week is still fair game.

Can we do this? Is it a possibility?

yeah pretty much.

Sir Cumference the Flatulent: And people think he's any better than any other Republicrat whore? He's just better than Clinton or McCain at hiding it.

it's a matter of scale. admitted, he contradicted himself. mccain and clinton contradict themselves on a daily basis. clinton contradicted herself in a debate practically in the same breath.

saying they are the same is like saying someone who rolls through a stop sign is exactly the same as a drunk driver who just hit a tree.

jenniferwillow 2008-05-31 11:17:09 AM
Oh no, a candidate rethought his position after time and experience! We can't have that. We must believe in the same things that we di 5, 10, 50, 1000 years ago!

On a more serious note however: To be honest I don't believe this is a policy change for the better. Russia and a lot of other communist nations have changed their political and economic principles because we began to allow trade with them, or they began to allow trade with us. Increased trade leads to increased wealth and flow of ideas. This is how the US should change the world, not with empty saber-rattling and isolationism.

As long as the opinion becomes progressively better, sure. If it's a dumb position, though, people should point it out.

Liberal Elite in 2004: God, Bush won again? It can't be worst than his first term.

Liberal Elite in 2008: Bush's second term was worst than his first.

Changing your opinion isn't pandering unless you do it weekly. When there are years between statements it just means you had time to reflect on past opinions and learn from it.

I don't see how "It's reasonable to sometimes change your mind" is much of a defense unless you can also offer up a reasonable defense of why he changed his mind on this particular issue.

There is absolutely no good reason to maintain the embargo, and there has been no new evidence in the past four years that makes the embargo look better.

jvl 2008-05-31 05:55:31 PM
Running a-puck: Can we make a fark agreement? That it is reasonable to change your opinion on a subject when it is more than, say, two years?

Yes of course. However, in this case it's the exact same flip-flop that every anti-Embargo presidential candidate has made -- including McCain. Those of us who are skeptical of Obama's message look at stuff like this and think that despite his wonderfully soaring rhetoric he is just another politician. Without his message of being a New Way, he becomes just another far-left politician.

If he had stuck to his principles, it would have better supported his message as a new type of candidate.

And while accusing Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) of wanting to continue the current administration's failed Cuba policy, Obama told the crowd that he could be counted on as supporting another failed policy-the drug war.

Back in '04, I would've opposed the death penalty, bar none. Now, I'm more open to it in extreme cases where guilt is 100% assured.

You'd better get the noose, because it's obvious I'm little but a pandering fibber, hoping to manipulate those around me.

What has changed in Cuba that Obama now believes the embargo should continue?
