Memorial Day - "Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May (in 2008 on May 26). It commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country."

Veteran's Day - "Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans on the weekday closest to November 11th each year."

Q. What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

A. Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty. A complete history of Veterans Day, and why it is observed on November 11, can be found on the Veterans Day History Web page.

No... they aired about three sentences, all from the speech and not the Q&A. It was a portion of a quick news blurb on CNN. Kind of like a slight overview of what he did on memorial day.

In any case, no... it wasn't some kind of cover up or anything like that. I would venture to say that anyone who seriously thinks this is a cover up has lost control of their faculties. :)

You think I'm stupid? Really? It amazes me. Demilitarize the military. Fantastic plan. Stop future weapons systems, as the rest of the world moves forward. Don't militarize space, as Russia and China go ahead with that also. Get rid of the nukes so only radical nations have them. You call me stupid but you blindly follow Obama, defending him at every level. I have not seen one single Obama supporter say "yeah, I like him but there is that one thing". At least McCain is smart enough to know we need to keep up with the rest of the world.

Sheep.

If Obama were to stop funding the military stone cold in Jan, 2009, we could still stomp all over any other military in the planet with what's currently sitting in warehouses. We have more aircraft carriers in service than all the nations on the planet combined. We possess over 5,000 nuclear weapons, enough to get a good head-start on sterilizing this rock. We have more planes at sea than most countries have period.

What're you so scared of, Nancy? That Yellow Wave you see in your nightmares? It ain't comin'. They'll beat our asses economically (and for the moment, they are) before they would even consider attempting to screw with us militarily.

Unhip1 [TotalFark] 2008-05-31 05:37:29 AM
There is a little known nuance to arguing logically that should be applied if Obama wants to remain fresh and forward-thinking in the eyes of Superdelegates and the general public.

Argue FOR something, not against.

Logical arguments present something, back it up with a set of theses, and have contingency plans at the ready in anticipation of rebuttals and counter-arguments. They are based on logic and avoid fallacy, the most damaging of which is ad hominem.
If I had an hour with Barack Obama to discuss strategy, here would be my attempt to keep things going and maintain the mojo:

1. Forget about John McCain.
Everyone knows who he is. He has a high stature as a war veteran and former POW, he has shady business sense and scandals aplenty. You don't need t constantly remind everyone that he is basically wishy washy and inconsistent, and that he is totally agreeable to military action at the slightest provocation. WE KNOW THE MAN.

2. Take a small break. Get some rest with your family.
You've got it in the bag. You are the presumptive nominee. After these last primaries are concluded, take a break and rejuvenate yourself for the long haul to November. Discuss strategy when you return, but be accessible in case something demands a statement.

3. After your break, get to know the people of the Appalachian region of the United States.
Some have said that you hold no sway with them, but this is simply because they don't know you, or what you're about. Don't send a proxy, go yourself. You can win these people over very easily. Meet them, speak with them, hear their problems and offer your solutions. Earn their respect and vote. It CAN be done.

4. Before the convention happens. begin to give a series of evenly spaced policy speeches where you lay out, in detail, your policies one by one.
It is not enough to say "they're on my website." Give people the real deal, and the Obama experience first-hand. Lay out specifics. Allow the critics to do their worst. Let the public see "the goods."

5. Don't let scandal be the only barometer of news coverage.
Don't fall for the appeal of simply saying what the other candidate is, enjoy the freedom of defining yourself instead. BECOME the President, and on the way, continue to converse with the average American.

6. Inform your visible (newsworthy) supporters to act responsibly.
In this day of 24-hour news coverage and YouTube, ask those you support you to refrain from calling the wrong kind of attention to themselves. They can be hawkish and self-serving AFTER you've won the election. This is how the Ron Paul campaign got labeled as the "crazy fringe" and, BTW the Obama Girl got a gig now modeling, thanks to the attention she got supposedly endorsing you. (The McCain Girls, not so much...) Opportunists abound. Let them know you hold them accountable.

Let logic be your guide. Respond to attacks with facts, and trust the American people to believe the truth, rather than sort it out from bluster and innuendo your opposition thrives on. This is our time for a real change. Be the agent of change.
In summary:
--Argue FOR something, not against the past.
--Spill the details of your policies in carefully timed and clearly written speeches from here until the Convention, then use the Debates to reiterate them.
--Stay healthy.
--Talk with people you've not spoken with before. Let people get to know you and what you're about.
--Lead with compassion and balls. Don't grow bland.

stupidhippies: Sitting in warehouses right?

The fun thing about warehoused ordnance: it can be removed from the warehouse, where it then functions just like ordnance that wasn't in a warehouse.

stupidhippies: Nuclear weapons?

Yup, nukes. We've got em by the metric shiat-ton. We're one of only nine nations that possess them, and save Russia, we have five times more than all the others put together.

stupidhippies: No how does obsolete weaponry and nukes that you pansies would never let be used do any good as the rest of the world moves forward with new technology?

Have you ever even seen any of the Jane's publications? Show me a single fielded weapons system that is significantly better than its American counterpart. In several cases, our second string equipment is markedly better than anything else out there.

Besides, if you're talking about reasonable defense research projects like soldier-level integrated CCC networks, the money is already in the pipe. Cutting spending tomorrow won't affect a project whose budget was greenlighted a decade ago.

stupidhippies: Thats the best you can do?

Do you really want a full analysis of how the US military currently stacks up against other forces?

stupidhippies: And I am not afraid just cautious. Getting a little defensive are we?

I'm not defensive, I'm just tired of chickenhawks pushing unrealistic defense spending when we've already got the rest of the planet outclassed by a ridiculous margin. We don't need a new multi-billion dollar fighter jet to replace existing multi-billion dollar fighter jets which still fly circles around the OpForce. We don't need to develop smart bombs which measure their accuracy in centimeters when we already have smart bombs which measure their accuracy in inches. Over-the-top defense spending isn't caution, it's blind folly.

We're so far technologically ahead of the rest of the world militarily it's not even funny.

The prudent thing to do at this stage is to continuing developing weapons systems we're already working on, not really work on any new ones, and expand stuff like DARPA. That way if anyone is threatening to catch up with us technologically, we have a base of future technologies to start developing so we can leapfrog back ahead.

Murkanen 2008-05-31 06:46:26 AM
Anarchofascist:

Indeed. Technologically you've advanced to the point that the only way anyone has a chance at successfully attacking you, let alone eventually beating you, is a-symmetrical warfare.

The biggest reason for us to not (openly) militarize space: if we start doing it, everyone else will. So long as we aren't, we're in a position to leverage multilateral deals to keep nations like China and Russia from militarizing space. And the longer that space is a somewhat peaceful place, the further we as a species can get in our progress toward exploring and colonizing space. So long as we humans have the power to annihilate our species, getting us off this farking rock needs to be priority #1.

Besides, we've got some pretty boss ground-based missiles that should be able to dust just about any manmade object with ease. Within the next 20 years, we should be able to do the same with laser systems. Why waste the money and effort to put all that additional payload in space?

Murkanen: Indeed. Technologically you've advanced to the point that the only way anyone has a chance at successfully attacking you, let alone eventually beating you, is a-symmetrical warfare.

Exactly, and that's not the sort of problem you fix with military spending. A stealthier jet, a better tank, a more numerous bomb isn't the answer to a dedicated low-tech attacker with a sniper rifle or a bomb vest.

First off, when used in relation to the military, fallen means killed in combat. Nothing else. Not wounded, not depressed, not tripped..killed in combat.

Second, didn't CNN do this same thing with McCain? Some gaff about Sunni/shiati?
