Have we stopped capitalizing proper nouns?

I'm more of a Delta Blues man myself.

Don't care if he ripped 'em off or not. He still made 'em rock.

This is old news. He got sued for it back in the 80's, and had to pay the people he ripped off.

But having said that, he's still one of the greatest musicians/composers/producers in all of rock and roll history.

Now if he'd only go on tour with John Paul Jones. Robert Plant is VERY optional.

I met a guy at a keg party once who said all modern music comes from either Led Zep or The Beatles. I ended up punching him in the face later that night but I can't for the life of me remember why.

/got arrested

These guys are the real authentic stuff.

uhhh...blues is *supposed* to be ripped by others ...rebuilt...renoodled..that's the point of it.

So when does Motown sign Amy Winehouse?

karmachameleon 2008-05-30 06:05:36 PM
People who keep saying things like, "Jimmy Page ripped off the blues," don't understand blues, rock, or probably music at all.

/just how many blues chord progressions do you think there are, anyway?

He should start a band with Micky Dolenz. They could call themselves "Holy fark, Those Two Guys Look Like Twin Polish Women."

Meh... About a third of Zep was blues. Another third or so was a ballad or acoustic and the last third was pure rock and roll such as Achilles Last Stand and Kashmir. There probably averaged out to about 2 or 3 blues tunes per album. Maybe 4 on a couple.

Page never denied it really even back in the day. I suspect Peter Grant had more too do with the credits than anyone. I can see Page being to obsessed with the music than the humdrum paper affairs.

And it's not like they released top 10 singles of these old blues tunes and rooked the writers out of the individual songs royalties themselves. People bought the albums.

Whenever one the writers raised their heads, Page settled with them to their satisfaction quietly out of court and parted as friends.

Not sure why Page gets dragged through the dirt constantly about this still.

dereksmalls 2008-05-30 09:53:39 PM
In 1985 Willie Dixon sued Zep for stealing his lyrics from the tune You Need Love and using them in Whole Lotta Love. The case was settled out of court, and Dixon, as well as the 4 members of Zep now get songwriting credit for that song.
Plant also quotes two Dixon songs when he yells ; Shake for me girl, I wanna be your back door man. (Shake For Me and Back Door Man).

first you have to make up your mind what you want to talk about, the blues, the fans, or the stinking music industry.
i was talking about the music obviously...silly of me in retrospect i guess since that doesn't matter any more in the music industry.
as far as the fans, they're all sheep, they just mostly keep bleating: "baaaa! zep! zep! all original all the time baa!"
the music industry? they're bound and determined to do whatever they can to kill the creativity that *makes* their product in the first place while at the same time declaring war on their customers.
even the artists blow chunks. performers today lipsynch, use auto drumkits, autovoice tone correction, and can't even make it thru a few sets on stage without help. it's pathetic. there aren't even real dj's on the radio anymore for the most part.
no wonder todays music sucks, the media it's delivered on sucks harder, and the industry that delivers it sucks the hardest.

browntimmy 2008-05-30 11:08:42 PM
It sucks that they stole but it doesn't make me hate Zep because 1) they usually made the song better and 2)Their original stuff is just as good.

Yeah there are works out there that said page's biggest influences were the blues and grant handled all the paperwork, page was big on settling with them since he realized what went on then lawyers go involved and fought. Page gets a bad rap but doesnt deserve it he is still one of the best guitarists in the past 50 years.

Yeah if only black artists did something worth stealing these days we wouldnt have such shiatty music being made.

I have and I do. One of my favorite movies. But then again, about anything I've seen with Steve Buscemi is good.

Jimmy Page comes off as a pretty decent chap in the interview. Guy knows his stuff.

Any word on where the Chicago Blues comes from?

I'd like a list of the "musicians who created something new."

Soooooo subjective.

Again, Zeppelin wrote plenty of original songs. Most of which were good and likely better than the artists you're referring to.

There should be a drive to get black people playing guitar again. Some variation on the "No child left behind" policy. But with guitars and racially motivated.

I must say R&B is pure crap today, compared to the genius of Motown "black music" really went downhill fast
