Oh no a crazy white catholic guy making fun of Hillary. Oh NOES!!!
Mika on Morning Joe. (who admitted she was for Hillary and lost her journalistic objectivity cred) was running this clip over and over this morning.
They asked Matthews about it and he was like "whats the story?" Mika was all like this is explosive and damaging to Barack and they're making fun of my homegirl. And he's like quit foaming at the mouth and try to appear objective why don't ya? But,but he made fun of Hillary crying!!!

not going to happen. I think the IRS and FEC have already investigated Trinity and gave them a clean bill of health.
if they go down that road the GOP is going to take a bigger hit than the Dems. it would blow back on the current administration.

non story. over zealous radical priest.

first off, the guy is a white clergymen, so the media have apparently sworn a blood oath never to criticize him. second, he's attacking hillary clinton, which is practically the national pastime of 2008. this is a one day story for the curiosity of being another chicago preacher saying stuff that an ordinary person might say.

OlafTheBent: I can hardly wait for them to be taxed.

This. Or if they continue to get a pass because they're "non-profit organizations" (which is a load of bullshiat) there should be an income cap on all individuals who work for non-profits; which would effectively prevent anyone from becoming a millionaire by running a non-profit.

Actually, that'd be a pretty damn good idea in general; it'd deal with the asshats at the Red Cross and other charities who make high six figures (the CEO of the American Red Cross gets an even half-million yearly) instead of using more of the donations for actual charitable acts.

I'm so disappointed! I really like Mika.

Regardless, this has got to stop. We have ample issues and controversial topics to deal with without having to manufacture them. I fault all the news outlets for even taking this up. But I suppose it's inevitable. Could they just instead play the clip and say, "Well that guy's wacky" and be done with it?

dgc360: I thought Rev. Pfleger was funny as hell.

I kinda did, too. But you know people are being scutinized to the atom at Trinity right now.

You don't want to give Hillary any fodder, no matter how insignificant or insubstatial. And especially nothing that belittles her gender or paints her as racist. Simply becuase you know the Hillary Army will take it and run with it.

Obama supporters being mean to Hillary isn't cool.

priestrape 2008-05-30 11:00:44 AM
Obama should just go back to being a Muslim. It was less damaging to his chances

HotWingConspiracy [TotalFark] 2008-05-30 11:00:47 AM
He then went on to parody Clinton, sobbing and wiping his face with a handkerchief.

This guy should hit the right wing talk circuit as a warm up.

TMBGfreak 2008-05-30 11:01:52 AM
I think the media didn't really get what was so damaging about Wright.

This is coming from a white catholic, so it mitigates the racial undertones. There are no societal allegations. It seems obvious that the father just wanted to have some fun playing the role of preacher at a black church. Chicago often forgets Obama isn't president yet. I don't think it's inappropriate for a church to be political if a member of the congregation is running for president.

Did she say that, or was that your interpretation? I always thought she sided with her dad on the presidential race.

Just for the record, this Priest is a huge attention whore here in the Chicago area. He's on the news all the freaking time. He's a white Jesse Jackson. Annoying as shiat. Anyway, carry on.

jeffwashingdc 2008-05-30 11:04:05 AM
Durrr. That's what Gee Dubya Bush has been doing for the past 8 years. He doesn't go to church ever except on Xmas and Easter.

But he plays a pastor during the presidential debates, so that's ok.

Does anyone actually disagree with this?

Except that you know, he's a priest, and in theory they are supposed to act a little better than us.

Except that, you know, the crowd (Obama's fellow parishoners) were going wild with laughter and glee as this priest was mocking a fellow human being. Nice people.

Everyday it's becoming clearer that if you want to succeed in politics, stop going to crazy church

FTFY

As an atheist, I humbly posit that someone who ceases to attend church entirely is still at least a half a century away (probably more) from even being in the general election.

This is deeply disappointing to me, since studies have shown atheists to be more committed to rational, fact based policy, but as that ever-famous poll has shown, the USA is more inclined to elect Muslims and homosexuals than atheists (not much more, to my continued chagrin, but a bit). For now, in the spirit of change though, the more secular a candidate, the better.

Edsel 2008-05-30 11:10:45 AM
Goddamn, before this election I had no idea church sermons could be so freaking exciting. First Wright, Hagee, and Parsely and now this. Mosques are WAY boring by comparison.

siener 2008-05-30 11:11:34 AM

Outside of the fact that he stated Hildog felt entitled because she was white, not really.

To be honest, when Hillary cried, that's when I lost it for her. I cannot go through 8 years of this sh%^.

Obviously because Obama doesn't have a super long term friendship with this priest, conservatives are going to let this one go.

How about we start with property taxes and we'll come up with a definition for income in the meantime?

Saiga410 Outside of the fact that he stated Hildog felt entitled because she was white, not really.

He also said it was because she was rich, powerful, and married to bill clinton.

And I don't think he meant "she was entitled to win" bc she's white. I think he meant "she was entitled to beat Obama" bc she's white (there's a difference). And is it really out of line to think that some on her staff, possibly herself included, thought the fact that he is black made him less electable, therefore, "I will beat him in part because I'm white"?

Admitted biases: Atheist & Obama supporter

That said, I'm happy to see this new focus on how crazy some of these pastors can get - as well as how unabashedly involved they are in their official capacity in the political process. The more light is shined on this inappropriate behavior, the more the religious right will have a chance to learn why separation of church and state is a good idea.

Twice I've heard the media segue this into the "Obama hasn't been to Iraq" story.

Is this just the token white guy at Obama's "racist" church?

Lee Jackson Beauregard 2008-05-30 11:21:21 AM
No, no, NO, subby. You've got to go to a church approved by the Falwellistas.

Lawnchair 2008-05-30 11:23:34 AM
Interesting from the study of religion. Liberation theology is, originally, an offshoot of Catholic study. The Vatican has generally hated it (preferring an apolitical Jesus, to stay friendly with despots everywhere). James Cone, based his ideas mostly on radical Catholic theologians, and both Pfleger and Wright are connected to that heritage. Not surprising to hear Pfleger at Trinity. While I like liberation theology (as a liberal, albeit a bare deist), I'm surprised to hear much of any liberal religious thought in America.

I'm finding it hard to believe that you're seriously taking umbrage at someone laughing at mockery.

The interesting part of this story (especially if you heard it) is that it has a Catholic borrowing his act from the "Fire and Brimstone" types.

Jonathan Edwards is probably spinning in his grave.

This isn't Obama's fault, but seriously WTF is wrong with these people? I know a lot of it is hyperbole, but you can't expose your kids to this shiat. This is one farked up church.

dgc360: I thought Rev. Pfleger was funny as hell.

Father Pfleger is a funny guy. He's also someone you don't want to mess with. The guy has kahunas (sp?) of steel dealing with what he's had to deal with over the years in his Parish.

I disagree, the problem with non-profits (including the one my wife works for) is that upper management is usually incompetent and/or grossly under-qualified. Most good managers either leave for more money, or stay to save the world and are burned out in three years.

//end threadjack.

As a long time Chicagoan...and a long-time Catholic, although I converted a couple of years back to the Lutheran version aka "Catholic Lite"

Father Pfleger is a douche.

He's a media whore who is always on TV playing the self-loathing white man. Rather than acknowledging that everyone has faults, he blanket absolves the black community of any faults, they are just persecuted by the police and whitey. I'm not sure what goes on at St. Sabina's but I doubt there is much of it that the Pope would recognize.
