The lone book left on the shelf? Letter to a Christian Nation, by Richard Dawkins. Classic!

It's a silly stunt to be sure, but a harmless one that I can totally get behind. It's nice to see fundie heads asplode.

man ..... imagine trying to find a bible /?
bhwhahahaha

and what exactly is bible studies?
are these books that help "explain" parts of the bible which are less clear to the average tard?

I mean, techincally, you can not interpret the bible ...
you have to follow it to the letter or you go straight to hell
(jebus told me that)

do the study guides have hints?
avoid the parts where jesus says to LOVE all you neighbors
focus on the stoning of women and gays

It's a douchebag move, and I'm about as hardcore atheist as you get.

How would you feel if the xtians came to your favorite Borders and scattered the Neo-Atheist books?

The folks to watch out for are the ones cheering behavior like this. They're the same kind of control freaks as the hardcore fundies.

Ha. All this does is increase the chances of the books being picked up accidentally by someone else. Good work there Nazis.

Kind of a dick move, and I'm agnostic. It would have been funnier if they have left a phony official looking notice as to where and why they were moved to the different sections.

Don't get me wrong, I think religion is for the ignorant, the weak and the insane, but farking up a bookstore is not cool.

Let them have their little fiction/fiction studies section.

Maybe I'll attain their level of cool some day.

I also don't condone it, but thought it was funny.

Funnier still is that the bookstore clerk thought it was done by fundies.

Curious, aren't bibles usually placed in the 'history' section?

/Seriously

Whatsleft 2008-05-30 05:10:55 AM
Simply placing Richard Dawkins' book, Letter to Christian Nation, would have been a much better and more subtle prank. Some unsuspecting fundie might pick it up.

/Shouldn't books critical of the bible be included in the bible studies section?

They do. They also stage sit-in protests until the store removes the books.

It's a bookstore, they're going to cater to the audience.

But I'm pleased that so far most people in this thread aren't terribly amused by the antics of a few people subverting the exploration of beliefs they don't agree with, not to mention interfering with the every day business of the store.

But they're college students after all. They've discovered such amazing, enlightening things that the rest of us will never understand. We should thank them for acting like the brave, reckless gods that they are.

College students suck.

Occam's Chainsaw [TotalFark] 2008-05-30 05:24:28 AM
Huh. Usually, the Fark anti-theist crowd (who thinks douchebaggery is next to Dawkins-ness) would be hailing this as a blow against big bad JHVH. Nice to see you guys decrying this as childish. Good on ya.

/Either that, or the real douchebags just haven't gotten here yet.

LordJiro 2008-05-30 05:32:18 AM
It. Was. A. Joke. The atheists weren't getting *rid* of the books, just putting them in sections where, you know, they *also* fit. Religion is, by definition, occult, for example, and the Bible contains rather copious amounts of sex.

Moving it to the Mental Disorder section was, I agree, a bit over the line, in terms of douchebaggery, and parenting and cuisine was just ridiculous.

/Dunno *where* the hell the idea to move it to 'Humor' came from.

sacrileg 2008-05-30 05:34:14 AM
The question of God or no God will always be with us. Its sad that those who lead a course of blind faith have grown so loud.

Let's talk about the God these people worship for a second. Its a very vain God. Salvation only comes through belief and faith. The good Samaritan cannot reach heaven. These people have forgotten where they came from, and if the devil actually exists, I'd say thats who they're worshiping.

KramericaWallet 2008-05-30 05:39:14 AM
"Patent absurdity"? WTF?

Nothing better to do? Instead of farking up some books, buy one or borrow one from the library and read it. In fact, try reading the damn bible. It's not just for people who believe in God, you know.

However, yes, messing up a bookstore is not cool. They just created work for the poor schlub who works there.

are we so single-mindedly retarded here as to not point out that sam harris is the author of the depicted literary work?

When I talk about those having blind faith becoming too loud, I am also talking about the people who deny any value to faith.

Echoic 2008-05-30 06:03:31 AM
Calm down, it may be childish, but it's still funny.

The only thing more annoying than a militant atheist is the atheist that has to take every damn opportunity to explain that he's not a radical atheist. You all sound extremely insecure, lighten up.

KramericaWallet 2008-05-30 06:14:09 AM
Like many other jokes, it's only funny to people on one side of it. I bet most people who wanted to get a book from that section wouldn't think it was funny. But, obviously, you're the ultimate authority on funny, so if you say it's funny that means everyone who doesn't think so is wrong. There's nothing sadder than hurting someone else just to give yourself and your buddies a laugh.

Knock-knock

Putting it in Humor, Fiction, Erotica, and Parenting? That's funny. Occult and Mental Disorders? That's just being a cockbag. Cuisine is downright puzzling.

thoughtwired 2008-05-30 06:19:47 AM
not even original, and not limited to the non-god partisans:

related:
From NYT 12/24/07:

Anti-consumerist artists slip replica products packaged with political messages onto shelves while religious proselytizers insert pamphlets between the pages of gay-and-lesbian readings at book stores.

Self-published authors sneak their works into the "new releases" section, while personal trainers put their business cards into weight-loss books, and aspiring professional photographers make homemade cards - their Web site address included, of course - and covertly plant them into stationery-store racks.

This happens all over: I've been in bookstores that have had signs posted in the politics sections warning that ejection would happen for anyone caught messing with the shelving. Its common behavior, but its petulant, and i'd like to believe atheists are smart enough to know better.

It's hilarious that if this thread was about a baby dying, this would be a dead baby joke thread, but Fark takes this opportunity to be politically correct over someone moving books in a bookstore. I love it. You're correct, we should mourn this tragedy. Let's head over to the thread where we make jokes about abused women and dead babies after we take a moment to reflect upon this unfortunate event.

The concept may be funny. But actually doing it will only seem funny to people who are not affected negatively by it (as are some other customers and the employee(s)) and who have no sympathy for the people affected by it.

Yeah, right, because jokes about domestic violence are really hilarious! And even more so when they're in relation to actual cases of domestic violence!

this was a bad idea for a prank just a hair below book burning because it put the free circulation of literature out of the nands of the people. oh btw, i don't care for fundies either. it all depends on whose ox is being gored doesn't it?

The Billdozer 2008-05-30 06:33:56 AM
Know what would have been even more funny? If one of these book clerks who had to put everything back in order would have grabbed a nice thick book about non-violent resistance and beat the shiat out of one of the people who did this while people stood around pleading for the guy's life. That, my friends, would have been hysterical!

Nah, it was pretty rude. This isn't hurting the "fundies" at all; it's only pissing off the owner of the bookstore, who probably didn't find it funny to have to track down the books and reorganize them.

What the hell happened to Fark's sense of humour today? The cutie staff chick, who had to clean it up, thought it was funny (^). And the dudes who did it said (^) "We'd just come out of Harold and Kumar 2, and were in an insolent sort of mood." Which makes complete sense to me.

Perhaps it would help if you imaging that one of the players was mentally handicapped. Or imagine that someone was hit in the nards or something.

Not at all. We just don't think its all too funny when idiots try to be cute and cause people to have to do additional work at a thankless job. I would have thought the same thing if a bunch of religious people moved all the "atheist" books around as well.

Go shove your tampon back in your mouth, princess.
