Obvious tag on holiday?

I'm amazed they've survived this long. The initial fan backlash over their sh*t-tastic album 'Load' started in 1996. Yet they have somehow managed to hump their way to 2008.

I quit listening in 1996 with 'Load' because it was the most disappointing album I had ever heard. A couple of years ago I heard St.Anger for the first time, and it was so painfully obvious that they were just trying to reach back to their previous success.

There's nothing left in the tank you sh*theads. Quit.

gilgigamesh 2008-05-29 05:52:59 PM
Strangely enough, I think Some Kind of Monster went a long way to reviving their flagging careers. St. Anger chewed dry dog turds, but it didn't really matter. People bought it because that movie was so effing great.

Metallica... Metallica... Nope, doesn't ring a bell. Aren't they dead?

The fan invective in TFA is hilarious - well worth a read.

Rev.K: There's nothing left in the tank you sh*theads

what *is* left, is an industry surrounding them. And if the machine can keep chugging and make a dollar out of 15 cents, then tour managers and roadies and catering people can have jobs. And Metallica does NOT hate america! Oh, but it hates your ears...

Some Kind Of Monster is just about the funniest rock and roll movie apart from Spinal Tap (and the UK Bad News shows).

The only guy who came across as a functional human being was Kirk.

I don't get too worked up about heavy metal but enjoy the fact that there are folks out that there that do.

That said, I am happy to have live a life enriched with the fact that I have woken up in the same house as Battalion of Saints to hear their griping about the clap they had (collectively) contracted the previous fortnight or day. (they weren't sure).

I really think St. Anger is one of the best albums made in the last decade. At least it was intersting. Load and Reload were awesome blues records. Really unique. The thing I can't stand is the high pitched vocals in their first few albums where the guitarist sounds like he hasn't reached puberty. Really, for all the people biatching about this band, their first few albums really sucked.

Valdes 2008-05-29 09:57:35 PM
The hate against Metallica is like the hate generated against another quite unqiue band: Radiohead. Radiohead are bashed for being creative and interesting musicians. The sad fact is none of the people here are probably capable of doing anything remotely creative. Most of you probably can't play "Happy Birthday" on anything more complicated than a kazoo. You're all really good at endless complaining though. Congratulations.

I list our generations as such:
The Greatest Generation
Baby Boomers
Generation X
Generation Yhine

Lumber Jack Off 2008-05-29 10:05:46 PM
I am a huge metal fan and can proudly say that I haven't listened to metallica since early 2000 except once in 03(?) when st anger came out...I listened to one song and that was the end of that.

although metallica did in fact help me get into metal, I have found there are much better bands out there with ten or even 100 times the talent in some cases as you. and besides, you're not even solely responsible for getting me into metal, there were other bands around the same time like Pantera, Dio, Sabbath, etc. you just happen to 'be there'. so in other words, fark you metallica, nobody cares anymore, I certainly don't care or need your music. now for love of FSM, kindly fark off.

Let's see... Music Major

I'm sure Mr. Music Major wouldn't turn down an offer to join Nickleback, would he? Because they suck so much worse as musicians than you do?

Yes, yes I would..

And the only musician in Metallica with any musical talent whatsoever, died on the side of a freeway in Sweden, in 1986.

Without bashing Metallica, I would honestly rate the musical abilities of band members as:
#1 Dave Mustaine
#2 James
#3 Lars (who whines too)
#4 Dead guy / Kirk
#5 Jason

Sorry, but they are/were all great musicians.

Hey Valdes, why don't you leave us real metal fans alone and go back to beating your dog.

Oh, wow, 75 internet comments? The Wired message boards have spoken!

I like how everything ever related to Metallica is full of comments about how nobody listens or cares, yet it still brings out VERY strong emotions in a lot of people.

What they really should do is give like a formal apology for the Napster thing. Just come out and be like, you guys were right, we were wrong. We want to make ammends. Then do like a NIN ghosts thing...here's the first 3 songs for free, pay $10 to get the rest if you want or something.

James Hetfield has admitted that Burton's influence was highly responsible for much of Metallica's early music and image.

A classically trained pianist, Burton used his large knowledge of theory to add to the band's sound, both through his bass work and teaching Hetfield how to theorize and harmonize.

Hetfield said that: "without Cliff, we wouldn't be where we are today."

Kazahmish 2008-05-29 10:44:48 PM

So... in other words... we have Cliff to blame for Metallica?

Kazahmish: So... in other words... we have Cliff to blame for Metallica?

Actually, quite the opposite, look at what they've done without him.
I'm sure a good portion if not all of the Justice album was in the works before Cliff's death, and that was the last decent thing they've touched.

If Cliff were still alive, I doubt he would have been a part of the Black album or anything after.

I get the hatred for Metallica, but I don't understand why people are so spiteful. You want them to fail? Prove them wrong? Ignore the band. This "I'm gonna download it out of spite hurrr" nonsense is just petty.

I'm just going to ignore the album.

\Unless I hear it's good.
\\But then I hang out on a mostly indie forum, musicgourmets...

browntimmy 2008-05-29 11:31:39 PM
Please tell me why people still care about the Napster thing. Yes, it was a bonehead move, but does it honestly matter to you that much? Let it go. Internet drama queens have been having hissy-fits over this for ten years now.

Also, that flash cartoon is to comedy what St. Anger is to music.

Ganymede_Elegy 2008-05-29 11:49:51 PM
Penis.

CZMisfitsFan 2008-05-29 11:54:03 PM
You know what's funny? Radiohead has basically admitted that releasing In Rainbows the way they did was a publicity stunt and they will never do that again. So they'll be charging the same amount that Metallica is now for their album, both physical and digital. And yet no one is jumping all over them because of that.

Also, Metallica's album is 18.95 for a digital download and physical copy. So, roughly nine bucks for each. Just like most every other band charges.

GimpyNip 2008-05-29 11:58:56 PM
browntimmy: Internet drama queens have been having hissy-fits over this for ten years now.

8 years! Does this mean we get two more years of throwing hissy-fits before you stick your nose in our dung again, partner???

My GOD! You mean Valdes was being serious?! That post was right out of 'opposites day'! I laughed my ass off because it was so backwards! Then I read the thread.... :(

"Their first few albums really sucked."

He can't really mean that, can he? I mean, he can, but he can't also be a metal fan.

I have had LEGAL SEX with women who were BORN subsequent to the release of "...And Justice for All." LEGAL!

Hang it up, Metallica. You will never write another Blackened. Heck, you STILL can't play Dyer's Eve in concert and have it sound remotely respectable.

HereComesTheScience 2008-05-30 01:01:45 AM
I honestly don't give a shiat what they did. If I like music, I'll pay for it. Did anyone else actually like Load besides me? I thought it was some great stoner rock.

SynthLord 2008-05-30 01:19:10 AM
It's been one stupid thing after another with this band, and I'm done with them.

I put up with (the black album), Load and ReLoad, figuring they were probably going through a popularity phase and might snap out of it. Being anti-piracy, I put up with Lars's big mouth during the Napster Episode because he was at least on the right side of the issue.

But when they made a documentary where they cried and talked about their feelings and tried to make up with Dave Mustaine, I knew that was the end.

Maybe their new album will be good, but I just don't care. No matter how good the record is, I'll never get over seeing these former weapons-grade shredders whimper on film ...

DD44Dostivei 2008-05-30 01:19:56 AM
I downloaded the Metallica pack for Rock Band today. And yeah, I guess it was worth giving Metallica money

I also downloaded a Monkees song

mr_646 2008-05-30 01:29:50 AM
I stopped listening to Metallica with the release of the Black album, it just didn't sound right to me. Load and Reload I didn't even give 5 mins of consideration before totally tuning out.

However, I seem outside of the "early Metallica fan norm" in that I actually like St. Anger, and I think the new stuff sounds pretty good too.

/just gonna download the torrent of the new Metallica album for free
//still listen to Master of Puppets at least once a week

Where I live, you can have legal sex with a girl who was born the same day as the Black Album came out, as long as you aren't her teacher, pastor, or coach.

DeathByGeekSquad 2008-05-30 03:55:32 AM
I like Metallica, I like other Metal bands. I also recognize that a lot of the vocal metal fans are like any other 'connoisseur', viciously attacking each others bands on a variety of different premises.

Personally I think a large majority of American Metal bands suck ass. I think Tool is retarded, fake, and more of commercial band than Metallica ever was. I think Dream Theater, Hatebreed, and a slew of other bands are overrated. That's just my opinion, and I'm sure there are those that disagree with me. On the flipside, I enjoy Swedish metal bands quite a bit more. However, when I go listing the bands I enjoy, someone out there will view them negatively, as not 'metal enough', because only the blackest, darkest, growliest metal bands are metal to them.

Fine, you don't like Metallica, good for you. Quit farking whining about it, nobody cares about your personal crusade of 'ill show them!!111eleventyone', except likeminded connoisseurs.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-05-30 03:58:27 AM
Valdes: The hate against Metallica is like the hate generated against another quite unqiue band: Radiohead

It's quite different, Metallica has treated it's fans badly. Radiohead? Never has. Also, whereas each Radiohead album is different, Metallica didn't help things by putting out a couple albums that sound pretty alike. Also, what they did was Jason Newsted just sucks.
