Not shocked.

Not at all.

He's showing his true politician colours.

$375 to his son. Wow. Big spender.

I got a sawbuck right here that says that many of the Paulites are posting "OMG OBAMA'S FOLLOWERS ARE SHEEP IN A CULT" messages here now.

Did you even read the article this biased blogger linked to? The man had several millions of dollars, I hardly call a few thousand "crazy rich". Also, his family has done lots of legwork on his campaign. The wristbands were made by his grandson, and his son did speaking engagements on his behalf, as well as other things mentioned in the linked article.

Now I'm not saying it's not beneficial to make the campaign a family event, but he's not really giving an unemployed cousin his campaign funds here.

samimgreen: $375 to his son. Wow. Big spender.

The amounts don't matter so much as the fact that that's about all his campaign is spending on at this point.

RON PAUL

Cagey B [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 12:30:28 PM
He's not making anyone rich (at least that we know about), but he has spent about $170,000 on family from campaign contributions at this point.

This is like kicking a dead dog at this point, but spending campaign funds on family members is almost never a good idea. Between this and the whole "I won't vote for earmarks, but I WILL propose them" thing, not even he can live by his crazy-ass ideaology.

beve [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 12:31:25 PM
He might be your Ron Paul, but he's not my Ron Paul.

I'm kind of hoping Ron Paul stays in the race. He could be this election's Ralph Nader by stealing votes away from McCain.

He's already said flat out that he's not going to run on any 3rd party ticket and the Libertarians have already picked their candidate.

It ain't happening.

So, about $150,000 to his family and their businesses, whom he has been hiring for legitimate campaign work, and most of them for less than $50,000? Out of somewhere around $20,000,000-$30,000,000? I can live with that. It's a better use of campaign funds than most of the others in this race.

/Likely voting for Obama anyway.

Shaggy_C 2008-05-29 01:57:02 PM
At least he didn't loan himself money and charge his campaign interest like Kerry did in 2004. Talk about slimy...

Larofeticus 2008-05-29 01:59:22 PM
Since when is paying someone $27,000 for a year of work making them rich?

Seriously?

LargeCanine 2008-05-29 01:59:29 PM
I am no Ron Paul fan, and I am derisive of Paulites, but this is nothing. He looks to have hired a few family members, which is nothing unusual, nor scandalous. I note that these numbers have a decimal point and two digits for cents as if to make the numbers look bigger. Also, these salaries are not excessive, assuming a full time job.

Power Skeptic 2008-05-29 01:59:58 PM
This has definitely become the "grasping at straws"/"mountains/mole hills" presidential campaign.

Holy crap hasn't anybody noticed that we have three presidential candidates that wouldn't be trusted to run a lemon aid stand in the real world?

Where's your outrage? Reimbursing your son's gas money may sound minor, but I can assure you it's far worse than when Hillary's brother sold White House pardons.

See, when your supporters are either batshiat crazy or liberals, running in a Republican primary where mostly old Republicans vote isn't really your best bet to win.

Larofeticus 2008-05-29 02:08:12 PM
Oh the best part is the $54,000 for Jesse Benton.

Jesse Benton is his campaign manager, and has worked with his congressional staff/re-election committees for years and years.

And he was single when the presidential campaign started; he met Paul's granddaughter while campaigning.

microbob 2008-05-29 02:11:24 PM
To quote "Mike": This is insane, Considering that the payments amounting to under $4,000 were probably reimbursements for gas and travel expenses where they did the same job and got the same reimbursement as anyone else. Wayne Paul is a CPA, and $34,000 is below bargain rate for a CPA working for a campaign. This leaves 3 members working for his family, none of them making close to big $$. I may add that Ron Paul is actually quite well off, with his doctor practice congressional salary and his investments, the man is worth several million. I really doubt the 70,000 spread among the 3 who were related to his campaign for over a years work was even remotely close to normal wages.

The right for him to him to pay family members for working on his campaign is implied through the tenth amendment.

Out of 20 million dollars raised, a whopping 169,000 was given to his family members who worked on his campaign.

I don't know how anyone could call that "making someone rich".

Which is worse- helping your family make money by letting them work on your campaign, or helping politicians like Phil Gramm and Joe Lieberman get even more stinking rich by working on your campaign?

Lawnchair 2008-05-29 02:26:35 PM
I thought that was sort of the whole point of Libertarianism. So, you know, you can afford to send your children to good schools and the children of lesser parents are appropriately punished. That kind of thing.
