major-kong: The ultimate paragraph is one of the better examples of baseless hubris you're likely to see.

That's pretty awesome.

Done right, I actually think this band could be fun. Either actual fun or ironic fun. Besides, who doesn't enjoy the occasional '80s/'90s butt rock circle jerk?

County Fairs all across the rust belt just cleared their entertainment schedule!

Except for the pig races and the monster truck rally, of course.

Wow, I didn't know Joe Satriani was a masturbater. I guess if he ever gives up being one of the most talented guitarists on the planet he could go pro with the masturbation thing.

"We've written eight, nine songs... When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin. It's as good as that. I know that's a mighty bold statement... We could rival Zep!"

Me thinks someone is throwing punches outside his weight class.

But who am I to judge...

The only reason this band would suck is because Hagar is the singer, but even my position on that has softened over the years. He seems to have finally learned that there is in fact more than one way to rock, and he seems like a pretty cool guy.

And hating on Satch is just silly.

DavidKirkBeale 2008-05-29 03:02:32 PM
I did always want to hear music created by the I Can't Drive 55 guy, the drummer who looks eerily like Will Ferrell, Steve Vai's guitar teacher, and the master of the single-note bassline, Michael F'ing Anthony. BRING IT ON!

/i love satch actually, and will listen to this when it comes out
//but michael anthony? seriously?

I think you've cracked Sammy's code. Clearly he's got a few thousand unsold cases of "HSAS" t-shirts he needs to get out of storage before the landlord puts them out for the trash.

MA is probably the most under-rated bassists in Rock. With Van Halen, he got the job done- holding the bottom end down and making the song rock. He didn't need to play a bunch of crazy riffs and stuff, as Eddie and Dave already had that covered.... he did just what he needed to- make the song rock.

karmachameleon 2008-05-29 03:24:34 PM
Way to judge before hearing even a single note, sublamer. Your clueless, lazy namecalling says it all as far as your taste goes.

NuttierThanEver: you're the man. An underknown and underrated classic, full of Neil Schon goodness. At the height of 1980s Journey rock/pop stardom, it was good he had a side band he could truly stretch out in.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime 2008-05-29 03:41:18 PM
Really you think it will suck with Satch. I think that will make it awesome. He is probably one of the most versatile guitarists on the planet, playing with a emotion, technique and mind numbing skill. I could care less about who he plays with if he is involved I will listen to it.

/how about buckethead in the next g3 tour

Sammy Hagar is widely known as one of the nicest people in Rock'n'roll, and he makes pretty good tequila.

jayhawk88 2008-05-29 03:46:31 PM
...we played some cover songs - we're a good cover band now. Him and Joe got together up at his place and they wrote, like, five things together, and we'll see."

Hagar adds, "We've written eight, nine songs... When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin. It's as good as that. I know that's a mighty bold statement... We could rival Zep!"

What are they, some lame college band? Is it going to be awesome for 5 months but fall apart when Joe gets a D on his History midterm?

wheresourfish 2008-05-29 03:47:49 PM
Say what you will about the man, but at least Hagar actually cares about his fans more than his own ego. Anybody who has seen one of his small venue shows can attest to how genuine the guy is with his music.

I don't think subby actually believes this. He (or she) has learned how to get a greenlight. Just come up with an ill-written, inflammatory headline. Winnar!

Perhaps they will make some "new" music and that's better than any friggin reunion. I think it just might be a good idea that instead of all of these old bands reuniting they just re-shuffle the members into "new" bands.

I don't get what people see in Buckethead aka Brian Carrol. He is good but he's no Paul Gilbert or Michael Batio.

Arbitrator 2008-05-29 04:22:21 PM
H31N0US: I don't get what people see in Buckethead aka Brian Carrol.

He's pretty versatile, ranging from ambient (Death Cube K) to regular riffing (his solo albums) to rock (GNR).

I don't think he's totally consistent in his output, but what he can get out of a guitar is more impressive than 99% of players. In the remaining 1% he may be toward the bottom, but that's still an esteemed place to be.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 04:27:24 PM
Satch is one of the best guitar players there is, Smith is one of the best drummers. As nice as having a great guitar player is, you want a solid band, get a real good drummer. Sammy has taken care of that, so things look good.

Joe Satriani didn't teach Steve Vai to play guitar. Frank Zappa did.

stephen74: Joe Satriani didn't teach Steve Vai to play guitar. Frank Zappa did.

No, that's incorrect. He studied with Satch, then went to Berkeley, then got the Zappa gig. He could already play...trust me, Zappa didn't pick anyone he had to teach.

And Subby? Up yours. We can thank the likes of you for the sorry state of rock music. "The feeling, man. WHAT ABOUT THE FEELING?" What about musical ability?

In short, go fu(k yourself.

jiaxiaobo 2008-05-29 04:57:27 PM
Satch taught Kirk Hamster to play. Which doesn't say much for Satch. Surfing, Flying & the Extremist were in my tape decks during high school and college. Sammy's like 60,000 years old, though, now. I can't imagine the vocals will keep up with the band.

creepy jackalope eye 2008-05-29 05:23:30 PM
This sounds like it's gonna be a raging inferno of suck. Who's gonna write the songs? Hagar may be a "nice guy" and all, but his songs are cheesier than Wisconsin. Chad Smith's a powerhouse, but something tells me he's no Leonard Cohen. Michael Anthony? I'm about as big a fan of Van Halen as yr gonna meet, but homeboy's not about to suddenly become some great artist. And guitar histrionics are not my bag, and Joe Satriani may be channeling God thru his fingers when he plays, but an 8 minute guitar solo is not a goddam song. They may well be the best cover band in the world, but I assure you their original stuff is gonna suck turd.

Such obvious trolling doesn't warrant a response.... um so this isn't a response.
/I think subby must be a sex pistols fan, that would account for his bad taste in music and guitar playing
//Smith should ask Frusciante to write songs for them

"Morthus Morgai...the future of rock."

Actually, Vai went to Berklee, the music school in Boston, not Berkley, the hippie college in California. However, Satch did move to the city of Berkley around the same time, and began teaching. In addition to Kirk Hammett, he also taught David Bryson (Counting Crows), Kevin Cadogan (Third Eye Blind), Larry LaLonde (Primus, Possessed), Alex Skolnick (Testament), Rick Hunolt (Exodus), Phil Kettner (Lääz Rockit), Geoff Tyson, and Charlie Hunter. (I knew of some of those, but thanks to Wiki for the complete list.)

And speaking of Vai joining Zappa's band: Link

Dear sammy,
No ballads, no keyboards, don't make a new song that instantly goes to sporting event dj's.
Keep it rockin', you are too old to scare the parents, so you have to do this right.

triage99 2008-05-29 10:15:50 PM
This will only rock if they play someone else's songs. Can anyone name an original piece from ANY of these guys in the last 10 years that wasn't merely an exercise in technique (except for Hagar: loser)?
