God that list is retarded. Way to stretch the definition of hair metal.

I know I'm going to suffer for this, but I have to object to classifying Queensryche as "hair metal." And Aerosmith, though they haven't done anything of quality in 20 years.

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 10:33:32 AM
There is no such thing as hair "metal".

What people call "hair metal" was actually pop music dressed up as Robert Plant and created in a Madison Ave marketing office. It was sold to teenagers.

It's much like the "country" music that is vomiting out of Nashville right now. All smoke a mirrors.

List of the day for April 29.

Guns N' Roses are not hair metal, nor is Aerosmith, the New York Dolls, or Van Halen. And Spinal Tap are not even a real band.

The top ten has only two actual hair metal acts: Def Leppard and the argument can be made for Twisted Sister.

Arguing about whom is the best Hair Metal act is like arguing about whether you'd rather eat a decaying dead donkey's phallus or a shiat sandwich.

I take issue with the use of the word "metal" for 98% of that list.

And no, not even Def Leppard can be considered metal in any way either. It was poppy hard rock with teased hair, leather pants and makeup.

Does Axl rap now too??

THIS. Where is Whitesnake, Poison, White Lion, Warrant, etc?

Note to "author" - before making a list, learn the definition of the topic of your list first.

/I see Twisted Sister more as a shiatty glam band

Loverboy. OK.

Van Halen spawned most of these immitators. That such sh*t could come of original greatness is sad.

I appreciate that he put Kix in there. I'm not sure they got much play outside of the central east coast, but we dug them in high school.

They are in the "Worst Metal Bands" (new window)

I think he has confused the two. The "Worst" hair metal bands were the "best." But the bottom line is...they still sucked.

musicky 2008-05-29 11:41:14 AM
List needs more Steelheart and less bands like Queensryche that weren't even hair metal. And "metal" really is a stupid term for it. It's hard rock, but if there's no connection to classical or folk music I don't see why it should be called "metal". Hell, even Europe was more metal than half these guys.

Awesome. I heartily agree, and was coming in here to say something not even close to this funny. Well played.

Not only is Guns 'n' Roses not hair metal (I prefer the term glam, but we'll work with the author's term), they were one of the first nails in hair metal's coffin (Nirvana was the last).

And Poison is the best hair metal band of all time.

I didn't even know I liked Poison until I saw them open for Kiss in 2004, and then I was shocked to discover I knew all their damned songs.

bahr [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-05-29 12:59:56 PM
Where are White Lion and Dokken?

For that matter, where are the awesome hair-metal bands that did NOT come from the 1980s? I'm talking about Bang Camaro and The Darkness.

Credit to the author for only mislabeling one progressive band as hair-metal. Queensryche should not be on the list, and it's nice to see that Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, etc, are not on the list as well.

Maybe I am missing something, but the performance I saw of Bang Camaro, they were not hair-metal.

They looked like regular college frat guys. There music may have a similiar tone to the hair-metal sound (obnxious guitar solos, breakdowns, etc), they didn't have the look. And we all know half the hair-metal label was the look. (Teased hair, tight leather pants, makeup)

I think they were "Shooz" before they went to LA and changed their name to "Kix". I saw them the night before they left for LA at that club in Pasadena - my parents lived about 2 blocks away. Cheryl Tiegs was there and a bunch of papparazi. I stood immediately behind her for an entire set and stared at her ass the entire time - I had no idea what was going on with the music.

Why does Hanoi Rocks keep showing up on these lists? The article states they are "best known" for having their drummer verhicularly manslaughtered by Vince Neal, but that's the ONLY thing they're known for. Unimpressive then and less so now.

And about half of those bands aren't even hair metal.

Crude 2008-05-29 01:22:08 PM
Immediate FAIL if Motley Crue isn't #1.

Even if it's a derogatory list, the Crue defines all Hair Metal. Period.

Oh, and Guns N' Roses wasn't a Hair Metal band.

Joan Jett was more of a punk? Who IS this idiot?

STRYPERSWINE 2008-05-29 01:58:57 PM
What about Tangier, Bang Tango, Rhinobucket, Wett Cherri, Smashed Gladys, Roxy Blue, Tora Tora, the Sleez Beez, Kingdom Come, Pretty Boy Floyd, Kid Wikkid, Vixen, Cherry St., The Bulletboys, and Dangerous Toys???

btw Hanoi Rocks is on there because of their huge influence. No Michael Monroe, no Axl Rose.

Whodat? 2008-05-29 02:07:12 PM
Neither GNR nor Ozzy are "hair metal" by any definition other than they have long hair.

jicon 2008-05-29 02:11:40 PM
Wow... a list full of pop/rock acts suddenly considered Hair Metal??

Def Leppard have always been a rock/pop act. Heavily influenced by glam rock in the 70s. No makeup as seen with Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, and early GNR... Yeah, they had the hair, like ever other person since Aerosmith/Led Zepplin on a stage. Lead guitarist was a HUGE Jimmy Page fan, the rest idolize Mott the Hoople and Marc Bolan.
Loverboy was the Canadian version of the same band. Only 1/10th as popular, and even used the same producer. Lovin' Every Minute Of It could have been released by either band.

Vixen is on the list. Bulletboys definitely should be in there. But, without Poison, why even have the list? They were the poster boys (girls?) for the genre.

jonathan_L 2008-05-29 02:59:55 PM
What? No W.A.S.P.? They had big hair.

RagingLeonard: created in a Madison Ave marketing offic

*facepalm* no, just no. At least not at the start and not for the most part.

Having said that, some of the bands on the list aren't hair bands at all.

holy fail list batman

Queensryche? Prog metal
Scorpions? Pure metal. Period. Not hair metal, just metal.
Twisted Sister? More glam than anything else. May have paved the way, but they weren't hair metal.
Ozzy? Are f'ing kidding me?
KISS? Aerosmith? WTF?
Def Leppard? Umm, no. They had big hair, but their sound and their vibe was NOT hair metal.
New York Dolls? No more than Twisted Sister
Van Halen? No. Just no.
Guns & Roses? Had WAY too much substance to their music to be hair metal.

gbowles 2008-05-29 10:20:12 PM
no Warrant, Dokken, Damn Yankees? these lists suck

Leetdewd 2008-05-30 12:45:37 AM
How many times must it be said before the unenlightened realize the simple fact that GnR is the most overrated band of all time? There will never be another band that will even come close to their level of suckage.

The slightest hint of Axl's voice makes me want to club a baby to death with a puppy.

crak_rabbit 2008-05-30 01:47:43 AM
Poison, Warrant, Slaughter, Cinderella...hair metal.

Van Halen, Aerosmith, Queensryche, Scorps...not

Whoever wrote this list needs a lesson in rock 101.

unfarkingbelievable 2008-05-30 08:03:41 AM
This is similar to the 25 worst "hair metal" bands list a few weeks ago. Can't they make up their freaking minds?

That said, I always liked a lot of Dokken's songs. I always liked Ratt's sound, very distinctive, nice tune development.

There was this one-album band called Beggars & Thieves, the CD is awesome, excellent sound and song development. Too bad Atlantic dropped them before the second album.

sha_angelico 2008-05-30 09:49:07 AM
Hey, I love Geoff Tate's (Queensryche) voice! He has an awesome range!

Ozzy is NOT hair metal. He is way beyond that, and entirely too talented to be put in the same category as Ratt.

Watching Rick Allen (Def Leppard) play drums using one arm and his feet is rather interesting, actually.

(embarrassment) I had the worst crush on Jon Bon Jovi when I was, like, ten. But who cares. He's still pretty. :)

And if they are going to put in fake parody bands like Spinal Tap, I wanna see GWAR! :) And where's Pantera, or did I miss something?

Patronick313 2008-05-30 01:17:38 PM
Where's Poison?

Or Skid Row? Or Warrant? Slaughter?

This list sucks.
