I'm old enough to remember when "Seperate Ways" was a new release. If I close my eyes, this guy could be Steve Perry. Awesome!

DaWormyPimpsta [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 09:08:27 AM
what, again? Isn't this like their 4th "new" lead singer since Perry left the band?

New dude sucks.

/I require your immediate removal from my freshly trimmed glade.

I still have that cassette from when it first came out.

They should just call the guy their new Steve Perry impersonator.

no one will ever replace steve perry....

I hear this new guy can barely speak a lick of English. I find that both humorous and inspiring.

/Me fail English? That's unposssible

Steve Perry has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. That being said, this new guy is pretty good.

It takes a lot of effort for musicians this skilled to make music this shiatty.

/ admit I like Neil's hendrixy solo on "Lights"

It. Is. Not. Journey.

skylabdown 2008-05-29 11:21:39 AM
That rocked... I haven't ever heard Journey sound that muscular... the rythmn section was on. That lead singer has some chops too.

the "Ellen DeGeneres Show"

Now there is a top musical venue if I ever heard of one.

Seen them several times, with and without Perry. Steve Augeri was great and the post-Perry setlist leans more toward the rockin' numbers than Perry's ballads with Schon in control. They even dust off alot of the Rolie-era stuff which Cain handles quite well. Jeff Scott Soto was god awful but the new guy looks like an adequate Perry clone.

For those of you commenters who don't know the incredible story of where they found this dude, here's the abbreviated version:

Neal Schon watched a bunch of videos on YouTube, including this one:

A classic rock cover band from the Phillipines. The awful-ness of both the band and the recording make Pineda's performance even more remarkable, in my opinion.

It's the the Steve Perry Uncanny Valley.

He definitely sounds like Steve, but his timing is a bit off sometimes, and he cuts stuff off in a weird unnatural way. It's as if he doesn't speak English at all and has no idea what he is is actually saying.

Just copying.

Like a robot.

That sounds exactly like Steve Perry.

I don't like it.

lithappens 2008-05-29 12:27:13 PM
On video, I like the guy. I'll make a better assessment after I see them live later this summer.

I'm not a big fan of Journey and I think Neil Schon is the most overrated guitarist evar.

But the new guy can sing and I like him way better than Perry. Perry's voice was too whiny for me and I really don't think he has the range of this new guy.

Agreed. This guy's chops blow Perry's away. I'm not talking now, I'm talking when Perry was in his prime. Still a little weird hearing a very Steve Perry-like voice coming from that guy. Kind of like the Asian Walken impression. Surreal!

rob.d 2008-05-29 01:57:03 PM
He is from the Philipines, so I'd say there is a pretty good chance he speaks English.

That said, he sounded pretty good, admitting that some Journey tunes make me want to stick a fork in my ear.

The clone-voice thing creeps me out.

Even more than Steve Perry does.

I worked with the guys last night so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. I got to say, the new albumn sounds good. Arnel's vocals are very good. What a shock...he sounds like Steve Perry when he is singing a song Steve Perry wrote and made famous! What are the odds.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-05-29 03:46:43 PM
It's not Steve Perry, regardless of what the guy sounds like.

Go tour with Styx and Foreigner, both of whom also have different lead singers now.

No ticket sale here, though.

sens [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 06:46:17 PM
Dammit, screw Steve Perry, that hack -- it's just not Journey without Randy Jackson!

I thought the new guys voice is slightly higher and thinner than Steve Perry's, but the resemblence is remarkable.

THIS. For some reason I am fascinated by this Arnel guy. He sounds good to me, but even admitting I kind of like this performance makes me feel like I am violating an oath I swore to never listen to crap like Journey.

Oh, and fwiw, that drummer has an amazing voice too. He sang some of their tunes when that Aurgeri guy's voice failed. He sings spot on like Perry and you can see some of it on Youtube.

My thoughts exactly. The engrish is barely detectable but once you hear it you hear it in every song unmistakably. The bugger can wail, though. Way better than any of the previous Perry wannabe's.

Well thats a recent thing. A "Journey" headline that didn't

unclefester325 2008-05-29 08:12:04 PM
like it or not steve perry WAS Journey... they were very forgettable before him, after he pried his way in and started asserting his influence they became a band bigger than most garage bands could ever dream of...

empres77 2008-05-29 10:08:55 PM
Serious. Pitch. Issues.

That being said, Steve Perry was Journey. Anything else is trying too hard.

"We said no more Journey psychouts!"

/probably not obscure

ericbo84 2008-05-29 10:55:13 PM
Sounded good IMO, he's no Steve Perry, but I was too young to ever see Steve Perry Journey, and I missed the Steve Augeri Journey (he even looked like Steve Perry almost). Going to see the new Philipino Journey this September with Heart & Cheap Trick, tickets are only $25.

Welcome to the Machine [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 11:29:27 PM
Not too bad. Steve is the man though, and I have been on a Journey boycott since they shat on him so badly.

Just last week, I converted my old vinyl of Escape to my laptop. I love my new turntable.

/Fark you Neil Schon!
//repeat: this ain't Journey

Impressive for a "tribute" kind of band.

Perry was one of a kind.

I've seen that vid before, and his voice sounds pretty haunting, what with the horrible fuzziness of the audio and all.

I dont get what the big deal is, Judas Priest did this ages go
when they hired cover band singer Ripper Owens.

Rock band Boston had been in search of a new singer after Brad Delp's untimely death, and a friend of Tommy DeCarlo, a Home Depot credit manager in Charlotte NC, urged him to send a note to Boston guitarist Tom Scholz. He did, and as Scholz's wife played Tommy's karoake versions of Boston tunes, Scholz said "I know Brad's voice, and that's Brad." After his wife corrected him, Tommy was flown in for an audition, and will now front the group on its summer tour.
Tommy's never been in any band until now, making this a real Cinderella story. "During rehearsals, it can get downright eerie," Scholz says. "I forget it's not Brad."
