Come on, subby. We all know that xenophobia, racism, jingoism, bigotry, and small-minded provincialism are family values.

The property-confiscation idea, however, was deemed too radical by the Oklahoma business community

Screw the citizens, it's the business community that really counts.

Does it outlaw the hiring of illegals, or is this bill just aimed at the common man?

Either way, I'm glad I'm not in Oklahoma.

Is there something in the water out there?

How is any of this in the least bit "conservative"? It's all increased governmental control and interference in citizen's lives.

And the attempt to deny birth certificates to people who have one parent who's an illegal alien? I mean, beyond being blatantly constitutional, what does it mean? Are they trying to deny them actual citizenship somehow, or just literally denying the document itself? Because that would be a dick move to end all dick moves.

Skleenar 2008-05-29 08:54:37 AM
Rep. Randy Terrill, Republican chairman of the Revenue and Taxation Committee, has emerged as a hero of the "protect our borders" crowd by authoring a law, known as HB1804, that makes it a felony even to give an illegal immigrant a ride.

Now that's a proportionate response.

Well, obviously, they took their birth certificates away, so the 2 year olds have gone rogue.

It's worse than I thought.

That even extends to medical care. Which is funny, the bill's sponsor even had this to say.

"Most Oklahomans do not endorse the idea of killing innocent women and children in the name of ideology."

Really? But I guess being Mexican doesn't make you innocent. Because if you start jailing doctors for treating illegal immigrants, you'll start having more innocent people die.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 09:51:26 AM
When that bill died on a procedural vote in the Senate, Terrill enlisted the Washington lobby group ProEnglish, whose specialty is robo-calling, to make constituency calls to state senators.

One senator took umbrage and forwarded his calls to Terrill's office. Furious at this "cowardly act," Terrill crossed the rotunda threatening to "whip his ass."

Well somone's a little full of himself. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better example of "bully."

Worse thing is I can't find anyone to mow my yard now. And I'm not kidding. Our HOA called at least 5 lawn care companies and 4 said they can not cover the work they have now because they can not find employees. And framing, roofing and most manual labor companies are in the same boat.

When we had our house built a family of Mexicans (I have no idea if any were illegals) bricked it in less then 2 days. Hardest working people I have ever seen. The house next door was bricked by whites. Took 2 weeks, and I'm not exaggerating.

palladiate [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 10:05:53 AM
For reference, here is HB1804, HB1811 (the language bill), HJR1046 (rebuking DHS for providing assistance without proof of citizenship), and HB3348, the "son of 1804" bill he had the taste not to provide details for when introducing the bill. He just proposed they write a bill with that bill. It doesn't look to be drafted yet, so no word on how they'd deny birth certificates.

Same when my house and my neighbor's identical house were roofed. One took 7 days, and really wasn't well done. I lay roof better and faster.

The Mexicans? Awesome job, were done in under 2 days.

Here's something interesting from the Oklahoma house, HR1037, declaring:

A Resolution declaring the week of May 7 through 11, 2007, as Christian Heritage Week; and expressing appreciation to Founding Fathers.

And includes many quotes that the Google only returns links to other states' copypasta legislation and some really Sketchy christian warrior blogs. About 6-7 hits in total.

I'm curious about the authenticity of these quotes.

Also, when all of these Christian groups combine to form VolChrist, Defender of the Christian Nation, you know what they're arrayed against is pretty non-Christian. Even if what they're fighting was done in the name of Christianity.

I'm more likely to agree with every major Christian denomination over what's "Christian" before I'd believe a politician over what is "Christian."

Hey, even if the immigrants aren't innocent by virtue of their "lawlessness," the doctors who treat their patients in contravention to a couple of parts of the law* will not be available to treat real innocent people.

Either that, you're your asking doctors to violate their oath. Which sounds like an incredibly Christian thing to do as well.

*Emergency medical service is exempt, but they cannot issue patient ID without checking immigration status, so immigrants can't be legally admitted, nor can be carried by an ambulance.

Actually it's really been helping around here. Crime is down, the er waits are falling under the national average for the first time, and we are seeing more help wanted signs. All and all I wish the federal government would step up and give these people a faster and better way to enter the country legally but until they do the states have to defend themselves from a population that cares little to nothing about the laws of our country. I find it hard to respect a group of people who's first act on our nation's soil is to break our laws.
And yes there are parts of the law that deal with companies that hire illegals. And yes they are being enforced. The best part was that before the law took effect (or is that affect?) the Mexican Community decided to have a strike to show how important all the illegals were to Tulsa. The strike worked, many companies had to closes that day because they did not have enough workers. Also it show ICE exactly were to raid next! And I am happy to report that most of those business are now out of business due in large part from citizens who do not want to do business with companies that break the law.

Undeterred, Terrill proposed another anti-immigrant bill to make English the official language of Oklahoma.

Anti-Immigrant bill? Better watch out your racist anti-immigrants in various countries through out the world... Having an official language is xenophobic!

A significant number of Mexicans, both legal...left to avoid harassment

That's very bad. Legal immigration is a great benefit to this country.

and illegal, have left the state to avoid harassment, while other laborers are living in fear.

I don't particularly care one whit in the world if an illegal immigrant is fleeing the state or living in fear. Go back and come here legally and I'll be the first to do business with you.

We need illegal or semi-legal immigrants here, though... They pay into social security and medicare and will never, ever collect. They've added 15 years of solvency to social security. Hooray underclass!
