No GPA inflation in Dallas

vudukungfu 2008-05-28 08:13:33 PM
I know a single mom, tats, and graduated HS in 2 years.
She's ultra sexy and smart.
Doesn't need a man or a HS framed certificate of doucheiness to prove her points. (which sit up all round firm and high_)
but a farking five point anything is farked up/

IrateShadow [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 08:21:20 PM
When I have children, I hope that I can beat them that effectively.

eddyatwork [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 08:23:05 PM
I'm officially old, but how in the hell do you get a 5.89?

zorgon 2008-05-28 08:23:48 PM
All honors classes. You get an extra grade point for each.

John Dewey 2008-05-28 08:25:56 PM
All honors classes. You get an extra grade point for each.

That should only give her a 5.0

zorgon 2008-05-28 08:30:06 PM
*counts on fingers*

Damn, you're right.

You got me.

zorgon: *counts on fingers*

Damn, you're right.

Obviously you weren't in honors adding.

Sucking a golf ball through a garden hose?

Damn, you're right.

Every once in awhile I do get one right.

RocketRod [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 10:31:42 PM
Well, fark her for messing up the curve!

Heroic Poser 2008-05-28 10:37:39 PM
TAKE THAT, OVERACHIEVER!

DamnYankees [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 10:38:07 PM
What the hell is a 5.89? That's not even possible. Even an A+ in an honors class would only net a 5.3 in the most generous system.

GreenAdder [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 10:39:45 PM
Are they giving GPAs based on the Metric system now?

dahmers love zombie [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 10:53:46 PM
However they get their GPAs, they're still screwing her out of her scholarship. If you RTFA, they're supposed to give the scholarship to the grad with the highest GPA. But the district defines "highest GPA" as the valedictorian, and then defines valedictorian as someone who took four years to graduate, not less.

So she's got the highest GPA, a perfect ACT, and finished in three years. And gets rewarded by being denied a one-year (!!!) scholarship that she, by any real definition, deserves.

And they spend millions in the same state to get borderline 'tards to read at a 5th grade level before graduating HS, rather than at a 3rd grade level.

Our priorities are farked.

jenniferwillow 2008-05-28 11:01:11 PM
Wait, you can get above a 4.0?

/what a little overachiever...

PC LOAD LETTER [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 11:02:12 PM
Texas won't stand for terrorists taking over our schools like that. Just look at her! And her name rhymes with "Atta" even!

BravadoGT [TotalFark] 2008-05-28 11:19:36 PM
Why do you need to be valedictorian to drive a cab?

/ducks

AP classes gave 6pts if I remember rightly

what a bunch of farktards ...
ooo you cant be #1 was you finished quicker than #2 ??
LOLOLOL

nothing personal
but the correct "ruling" would have been to point out the OBVIOUS flaw in the rule and fix the rule

unless the goal of highschool is for you to be in their POWER for 4years ... not actually to edjumacate you

of course
this was texas ...

daveydave 2008-05-29 12:05:40 AM
5.89? GTFO with that.

Rambino 2008-05-29 12:07:11 AM
Mmmmmmm... 16-year-old college freshman + beer, with no "auntie" in sight...

/has a seat over there

Tusken_Raiders 2008-05-29 12:07:58 AM
In my liberal Massachusetts prep school...

6.0 = AP classes
5.0 = Honors classes
4.0 = everything else

TripSixes 2008-05-29 12:07:59 AM
Their GPA system is a lot like 5 card draw, deuces wild, one eyed jacks wild, suicide king wild, with a joker.

moothemagiccow 2008-05-29 12:08:19 AM
eddyatwork: I'm officially old, but how in the hell do you get a 5.89?

It's called pandering. There are regular classes, advanced classes and honors classes. The dumb kids are in the regular classes, and they get a 4 if they get an A, like normal. The average kids are in the advanced classes, so if they get an A, they get a 5. The smart kids are in the honors classes, and they get an A, they get a 6. There are always useless classes like Speech and Gym where they lump them all in together, and honors students are forced to take a 4.

Yeah, it's stupid.

ZoSo_the_Crowe 2008-05-29 12:08:44 AM
Heh, high school salutatorian here. Valedictorian was daughter of president of the school board... numerous times I witnessed her get C's or D's on finals and still end up with A's in the class...

...anyways, I was *glad* I wasn't Valedictorian, cos I didn't have to give a stupid speech. =D

Still ended up going to USC for free. This girl probably won't have to pay much for college either unless her parents are rich.

ultraholland 2008-05-29 12:08:56 AM
That's not even a farking real GPA.

Ikahoshi 2008-05-29 12:09:01 AM
We wouldn't want to reward exceptional achievement like a perfect grade point average AND finishing early.

That's just showing off.

karma_police 2008-05-29 12:09:24 AM
GPA inflation is so stupid and unnecessary. Colleges adjust for it anyway (at least the university of washington does) so its not like it gives you any real advantage.

That's like saying "oh wow that home run was really good! let's say they got 1.5 home runs but when we tally up the stats itll just count for 1"

what the hell is the point?

puffy999 [TotalFark] 2008-05-29 12:09:52 AM
It's not that difficult to graduate high school very early.
Now, doing it while taking all the tough classes, and having great grades... that's a bit tougher.

forte21xx 2008-05-29 12:10:14 AM
Stupid GPA inflation. I got screwed out of a few internships myself because the highest grade my college gives out is an A, and the highest GPA is a 4.0

ah3133 2008-05-29 12:10:16 AM
that would be awesome if she came back to give a valedictory speech when the rest of the class graduates, but she'll have already been away at college for a year. she'd be all stoned and dressed like a hippie, and make the speech all political.

ummu 2008-05-29 12:11:08 AM
They created a special title just for her. I can't imagine a greater honor, so what the fark is everyone complaining about o.O

Tapakip 2008-05-29 12:11:15 AM
5.6 Was the Max GPA at my HS in Mass. It probably helped applications to colleges when kids got 3.8 and they didn't look closely at the transcript.

She took all AP classes I'm sure. They are harder than Honors, and deserve a higher GPA. She also deserves the scholarship, as the counselor told her she'd be valedictorian.

Then again, this did happen in Texas, which definitely deserves its own tag by now.

Shaggy_C 2008-05-29 12:11:27 AM
Meh, honors + AP classes + being a stuckup smarty pants biatch = a lifetime of regret when you look back on all the fun you missed.

yagottabefarkinkiddinme 2008-05-29 12:11:48 AM
Nice job. I wonder if she will be the one who can think of the cure cancers. It's not how smart you are, it's what you do with it that counts.

Cronbach 2008-05-29 12:12:15 AM
Sounds to me like good ol' fashioned Texas racism.

It's completely farked. She should have gotten the scholarship for being brilliant. I hope she is the doctor for one of the school board members one day... and just lets 'em croak.

mydogboris 2008-05-29 12:12:25 AM
Could it be that she is a minority coont versus a whitey white Texas boy "Tyler Scott Franklin"?

hmmmm....

moothemagiccow 2008-05-29 12:12:48 AM
*Remember that we in Texas are finishing almost last in IQ, high school graduation, standardized test scores, etc despite being the second most populous state in the union. You can figure how Texas votes 60-70% Republican. The schools here are shiat, and the honors programs are simultaneously an out for the hard-working students and an out for the lazy kids. The former get pandered to in their inflated GPA, the latter don't have to work as hard.

PockleCod 2008-05-29 12:13:05 AM
Wow,

My school in Michigan gave honors and AP classes a bump by allowing students in those classes the possibility of obtaining an A+ (4.33) if they earned even higher than an A. And I thought that was idiotic. This is absurd.

crazyeddie 2008-05-29 12:13:15 AM
Here's an idea: Instead of giving out a million points for honors classes, why not keep the 4.0 scale and make the classes HARDER? You can also just drop the non-honors courses so that the highest attainable level is a 3.0.

/grade inflation is horrible.

mccallcl 2008-05-29 12:13:23 AM
Hoy crap, supernerd.

Reminds me of the kids in my honors classes that would cry over a B in public. All hope of a normal life have already been lost. The real world is going to crush that kid like a bug.

slideaway 2008-05-29 12:14:01 AM
5.89?

Highest you could get in my school was a 5.0. That was with all honors classes A's all 4 years. Even if you took college courses whilst in high school you could not get over that 5.0 mark.

Seems to me this school district is an obvious abuser of grade inflation.

Can'tLetYouDoThatStarFox 2008-05-29 12:14:33 AM
As long as we're dealing with fake, inflated GPAs, my GPA was 20.83.

Who cares? Public school is a joke anyway.

moothemagiccow 2008-05-29 12:14:43 AM

Dumb kids can put it on their resume. The universities don't adjust for it, the high schools do. They just lie to the parents and students. Colleges can't be bothered with that shiat.

Sir Vanderhoot 2008-05-29 12:14:43 AM
Back when I was in high school, honors classes were worth an extra .5 on your GPA, and AP classes were an extra 1.0. Of course, the competition at the upper-upper end of my high school was absurd, so at the end of senior year everyone was trying to figure out who was at the top (your report card said your rank out of the class) and none of the usual suspects got it. We were all trying to figure out who was #1, and it turns out that some transfer student got it.

He had transferred in the previous year, and thus could take all AP classes. All of the rest of us, however, had all of the gym classes and such that we had to take freshman and sophomore year, and getting a perfect grade in those classes (4.0) still dragged down your GPA enough that he passed everyone.

/but he didn't give the valedictorian speech, that went to Morgan, who had the finest ass in the goddam school.
//and out of 750+ students, we didn't have anyone get into Harvard that year. Considering my high school and the caliber of the students, that was very unusual.

Or perhaps she'll be wicked successful and cure cancer... one or the other I'm sure.
