Chances are most songs that sound alike are the result of the "shotgun effect".

You get a million people firing a million shotguns off in every direction chances are two or more of them are going to hit the same targets.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of bands in the world writing their own material. Even if not confined to western music theory there are only so many notes and so many chord progressions possible. People tend to write about common life situations. So it's completely possible for two different bands to write songs that have a similar sound and similar topic without the bands plagiarizing one another.

Also, the My Sweet Lord/He's So Fine lawsuit was one of the most idiotic plagiarism lawsuits ever. The judge who found Harrison guilty of "subconsciously plagiarism" needs to be consciously kicked in the balls until he gets a clue.

Okay having heard both songs I'll definitely call shotgun effect on this. It sounds like both are based of a 1st, 5th, Minor 6th, 4th progression which has been used in a lot of songs. I've even written a song called "Pop-up Wedding" using that progression.

If you have a song that sounds like a Miley Cyrus song now is the time to think about quitting music. Or life.

falcon176 2008-05-28 02:56:10 PM
compare the intros of these three songs in chronological order:

Firehouse- Overnight Sensation

In Flames- The Hive

Atreyu- Right Side of the Bed

Thursday- Standing on the Edge of Summer
Soilwork- Departure Plan

The more simple the riff, the more likely they will sound/ be the same.

I'll be more interested when Miley Cyrus is using riffs from Dream Theater.

I would assume s/he is ear trained in music theory. You'd be surprised what you can pick up on when you have solid theory.

I was listening to a System of a Down song where the intro sounded very much like Heart's Barracuda. I cannot imagine SoaD intentionally plagiarized Heart. Related to the post in that coinky-dinks do happen.

I, V7, vi6, IV is a very common doo-wop (i.e. blues) progression. I believe Alfred's Book I teaches you the C, G7, Am, F progression before you reach page 10, even.

Your progression (C, G, Am, F....as the easiest demonstration of that progression) wouldn't make a lot of sense musically unless the G and Am were inflected, at which point it kinda gets away from being called a I, V, vi6, IV.

It's splitting hairs to an almost infinite degree. Music theory can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. I don't think think the band has a case against Cyrus' writers, though. With such a simple song/lick, almost anybody could have come up with that on their own; it doesn't exactly require Beethoven to compose that.

It's as easy as learning how a chord progression sounds, then realising you know a song with that progression. From that point on you will notice any time you hear a song with that progression.

Think Pachabel's "Canon" vs Green day's "Basketcase".

Also, in rock music there are really only 5 or 6 common progressions each for major/minor.

What it tells me is that the whiners complaining about it haven't figured out that there are only about five different songs in all of rock and roll/country/pop.

Any time music is based upon repeating, rhythmic chord progressions, you're going to get stuck working the same material.

The drummer in my band is a snowflake about this. He's always going off on how he don't need no stinking rules. It pisses him off when he brings a new discovery to rehearsal, and I tell him, "Oh, that's in F, and we can play it in any number of different ways..."

/ Theory rocks, whether you know it or not.

Never heard the first one, and was never a huge fan of GnR. But GnR totally kicks that other band into the dirt.

Is there a song that has been covered more times than any other? Two categories, maybe, for traditional (public domain) vs known writer/copyright holder, perhaps?

I like "Ruby". Old bluegrass, but I've heard it fast, slow, crisp, and all electrically distorted. At least half a dozen bands, and I'm not very cool...

BleedPinstripes 2008-05-28 10:27:56 PM
Ok,

1) Scotty Doesn't Know is an entirely under appreciated musical masterpiece. It is a perfect storm of auditory awesomeness. To refer to Lustra as a "loser band" is heresy.

2) While it is possible it is entirely a coincidence, it is far more likely to be a blatant rip off, although very often the person ripping it off doesn't realize they are doing so.

You hear a song a few years back, never paying it any attention. Then one day someone is playing around with a guitar and unintentionally plays the hook, and your brain starts filling in the rest. You think you are composing it, when in fact you are regurgitating the details just poorly enough to not realize it is a song you have heard before.

I'm going to say there is a .0001% chance that song sounds the same if the composer never heard Scotty Doesn't Know.

RugbyJeeves 2008-05-28 11:43:31 PM
She paces and sings her "song" almost match for match with that other... Song.

... Where's the "Let's make a youtube of both songs playing at the same time" that we've come to know and love with Nickleback, lol?
