Divide by ten and they won't get pirated - these luddites are intentionally baiting large scale piracy, assuming their shiat is even worth the modem time.

um...do these idiots realize that they just dared the world to pirate their new album...?

If they did that on purpose in order to drive up interest - then they're brilliant! If they actually expected people NOT to pirate their stuff....then they're stupid.

There are certain bands that I will go out of my way to pay for content. Mostly because I laud their openness with fans and their stance on file sharing. Trent Reznor is one of those. I may not like every track but I know he understands how to empathize with his base. Same goes for new bands trying to make it. It will either be drm free dl's, concert tix, cds at the show, swag, or a combination of the four but I want the artists to succeed.

Metallica? They'll always be RIAA's biatch. I don't even really like their music anymore for that reason but if I check it out- TPB.

/and uh, yeah. hung like a gerbil there Lars.

I agree with this whole heartedly. Rush, Iron Maiden and maybe a couple of more, these guys however...

I might download the album out of spite and simply delete it after seeding for a couple of weeks. Fark 'em all.

I wish Metallica would pay me $24.99 to listen to their crap these days. Fark you Metallica, you are a shell, if that, of the former greateness you used to be back in the day. Here's a raising of a beer to the FSM that your next tour will end in tragic failure, with the remaining original three capsized under a bus dead. Even Cliff would probably turn his back on you in the afterlife for the shame and asshattery you have brought down on the Metallica name.

Metallica wants you to pay up to $124.99 for the platinum experience and to watch them create their latest studio opus.

While I'm one of the first to tell Metallica to fark off for what they have done to their legacy, this guy is full of shiat.
Here's the page at Mission:Metallica that lets you access the 'fly on the wall' videos for free. You only pay for the album and the upgrades if you want too.

You can download the album for $11.99 or download it and get a physical copy for $19.99. It should cost less, especially since I can't help but think it will be as crappy as their last few albums.

Smitty trusts the article ---> Fark trusts the headline ----> bunch of fuss over nothing. I might get the digital platinum package. $10 off MetClub, which I plan to join for presales for the fall tour. But for $11.99, the digital album should have uncompressed options for people who know how to make their own compressions or want to hear it in FLAC. If I just want 320, well, there's cheaper ways to get it.

I am a former Metallica fan. When their pre-asshattery purchased CD's were stolen from me I didn't bother to replace them. I don't have any Metallica music right now, pirated or legal, nor do I intend to get any.

BTW - The Offspring have the best record when it comes to their music of any big band I know of. They were streaming their entire catalog for free on their website nearly a decade ago KFUK pirate radio is what it was called. Then they released all of their songs free and DRM free for download (Quicktime Format - WTF?). One of their latest songs is available on their site now, I don't know if you can still get the whole back catalog free or not, but it's worth a look. On that note I've bought nearly everyone of their albums at least twice, a couple of them three times due to my truck/house being broken into and gifts. I'm weird, I'll pay for free stuff and go out my way to avoid stuff you have to pay for.

Asty 2008-05-28 03:46:39 AM
Are all newly-released CDs really $20 to buy (physical copy) now?
Someone made mention of that fact in the comments, and I found it a bit excessive.

(Haven't bought a CD since the 90's)

Doubt you can download the old stuff free any more. The label threatened to sue them when they announced they planned to leak Conspiracy of One on Napster.

You have to just wander into Virgin Records and not care about price to pay $20 for a CD these days.

It's a dumb move. Ironically they're kind of saying "our fans don't know how to make digital copies of CDs" because it's being pushed as you're getting the physical CD "AND THE DIGITAL COPY AT MIDNIGHT" (I'll be shocked if there isn't a leaked 320 rip by then). I'd be surprised if the big box stores price it higher than $11.99 for the physical CD on release week.

If there was an option for $20, uncompressed digital download, "platinum experience" (this site, and I'm guessing specifically this "enhanced" experience, is supposed to replace the bonus DVD), and $10 off at MetClub, I might go for it. But I know there will be just as good 320 rips on the torrent sites.

No. I've started buying music again and although I don't buy this mainstream crap, I can happily buy imports and very limited production releases for less than $15. There's a new box set from Gas coming out with 4 cd's and special packaging for $30 or so. Prices are just right, IMHO. Vinyl is fairly well priced as well, and I plan on picking up a turntable soon too.

I'm honestly tired of file sharing and want to own actual copies now. P2P is just gluttony at this point, and it's almost disgusting to see people trading FLAC's with no intention of buying the album.

Wow, lets not release a good album in well over 15 years and then price it way above other similar products. Not a good business decsion. It does not give reason or excuse for someone to steal there work. Would you shoplift the cd from a store? Why is it ok to do on the internet?

/no time for new metallica, where is my master of puppets cd
