I thought that's where the poetry comes out?

Ray Manzarek was an organ player for one of the most fantastically over-rated bands in the history of the species during one of the most over-rated cultural period in history. Why is this newsworthy?

Worst part was he was the most talented member of the band. And boy, does he know it.

I was under the impression that Robby Krieger wrote and composed most of their hits.

Kreiger was a fantastic and unique guitarist (no-pick; open handed) and Densmore was a great drummer (real keen on then-emerging Latin motifs).

Densmore's bio RIDERS ON THE STORM is a good read into a 1st hand account into the nuts & bolts of the music itself as well as Morrison's insanity.

As long as he plays him I'd watch it.

Jim Morrison wrote the words... he was a poet.

Gotta love those 41st anniversary celebrations! They are always the best!

I personally liked Danny Sugarman's account of working for the Doors: Wonderland Ave.

I agree with rocinante721 for a real bio of the DOORS, read that one. Its not written by someone who would suck morrison's cack, so it's s little less biased .I love how Densmore in that book goes from giving example of Morrison's "genius" but then 2 page later you wonder a what a pure, self-indulging, egocentric arsehole Morrison really was. I think Morrison in the end (no pun) was a great shiat-stirring leader who wrote good enough for rock lyrics, but his poetry is laughable

Also, KUDOS to Densmore for sticking to Morrison's wish and his own belief, and putting up a fight about not whoring The Doors catalog for commercials to the highest bidder

True dat. His "poetry" is only slightly more talented than Henry Rollins'.

Why does Manzarek say pissy little things about Stone's movie? Maybe he didn't like Kyle MacLachlan's performance?

Nah. If you read Morrison without listening to him, it's like reading a poetry book for drunk 1st graders. It's not a slam on his fans because the music was largely enjoyable.

And Manzarek was, by most people's standards, the most talented individual. He provided the keys and the basslines and was quite a musical talent. Saying that one person has more talent than the other in no way implies that the other has no talent at all.

I'm very sorry you are under the impression that people who have criticisms for some things in popular culture must only have them because of self esteem issues. It may say more about yourself.

agree. Rock lyrics are pretty good... but his poetry books look like they were written by Blake when he was 7 years old

Let's see.

I had some cake.
Some ice cream cake.
It was chocolate.
And coconut too.
It wasn't my birthday,
But I said "hey,

meh.

Luckily, one does not need to be a master of any subject in order to appreciate/criticize it. Otherwise, sports arenas would be filled with all-stars instead of drunk, fat armchair referees.

I've always liked Manzarek's answer to a Rolling Stone writer who asked if Morrison actually did whip it out at the famous Miami concert:

"Well, we all know what he did, if he did it. And if he did, how long was it?"

b2theory: Ray Manzarek was an organ player for one of the most fantastically over-rated bands in the history of the species during one of the most over-rated cultural period in history. Why is this newsworthy?

Last week it was John Lennon everyone here was calling a terrible no-talent overrated hack in some weird attempt to make themselves look all cool and independent-thinking-like. I guess this week it's the Doors?

Yeah, simply because they died young some of them have achieved some weird hero status that no one ever deserves, but part of the legend of these people comes from the fact that they were very talented. The Doors were a great band, definitely great in their own time, and they still hold up pretty well today.

Jimi Hendrix is a bit larger than life today, but is it cool to say he was a shiatty guitarist? That Janis Joplin couldn't hold an audience in the palm of her hand? Or that Jim Morrison wasn't unusually charismatic and that the Doors didn't put out a whole slew of pretty great tunes?

I guess so. But whatever, these people were dead before I was born, but I'll still take them over 99.9 per cent of the losers puking out all that whiny emo shiat I hear on my radio every morning, or the bajillion Nickleback soundalikes, or the 1000 different guys who all think screaming in that stupid over-the-top Korn voice is like the most badass thing ever.

"I like any reaction I can get with my music. Just anything to get people to think. I mean if you can get a whole room full of drunk, stoned people to actually wake up and think, you're doing something."

"If my poetry aims to achieve anything, it's to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel."

"Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything; it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through anyone that suits you."

"Some of the worst mistakes of my life have been haircuts."

Ray Manzarek was the most talented member of the Doors. He was so good, he went on to produce Echo and the Bunnymen. You think Jim Morrison had Lips like Sugar? No, they were lips like Jack Daniels. So, he moved on with his life. And now, he should move on with Jim's death. Make the movie, Ray. I'll watch it.

They need to add some Doors tracks to Rock Band...great way to get people into your music.

Look, you can call Jim a drunk, you can say Ray was an egotistical asshole, but take a listen to the LA Woman album or Morrison Hotel, these guys were good and a heck of a lot of their music has stood the test of time. Will anyone remember some of todays bands 20 or 30 years from now, probably a few of them. Kreiger & Densmore were very good for reasons already mentioned in previous comments posted here.
