One of the best versions of "Hallelujah" married to one of the worst.

I'll leave it to you to figure out which is which.

/John Cale FTW
//the original isn't actually all that good

Pic your version. I am somewhat partial to the Dresden Dolls version.

I also really like Jeff Buckleys.

i just wanted to pop in here to say that I think John Cale's version is the better one...

Cale's version is really that great. Good, but not the definitive version.

Buckley is still tops.

The only thing lamer than covering Hallelujah is covering Landslide...

Every version sounds the same, no one does anything different with it. STOP COVERING IT!!!

Rufus Wainwright?

I heard he sucks.

Buckley's originals were much better and more diverse than his covers.

I think Cale's version is kinda boring, but I've only heard it live I think my favourite is Enrique Morente's flamenco version just because it's like a whole other song. But that's just my opinion ;)

Also Leonard Cohen = Amazing Songwriter but such a terrible performer.

Where did you get those? I remember finding a blog page once with links to all those versions (specifically those), but I can't remember where it was. Make sure to check out Brandi Carlile's version as well as Willie Nelson's too.

The reason I don't care a whole lot for Cohen's recording is the choir. Hallelujah bleeds desperation, disappear, and loneliness; the solo piano/voice of Rufus and Cale and the solo guitar/voice of Buckley do a much better job at portraying that, in my opinion. Spectorian production doesn't do the song justice.

Uncle Leonard's joke, which is the one John Cale got right off... Hallelujah is Heartbreak hotel filtered through three thousand years of Jewish mysticism...

Collecting over the years. Found a torrent once with like 10 of them.

Yeah but was there a smiley face carved in a tree near where Buckley was found?
