Hard for me to judge, that song describes a couple of people I loved & lost all too well.

Rush does not blow. Too much evidence to the contrary. Their longevity in rock music and their consistent popularity, even though they rarely crack the Top 40, speaks for itself.

Oh, sorry I was about to get a little long winded there. What I meant to say is your a right farkin twit carnifex2005!

I love the first verse in Nobody's Hero. Translation:

My friend is gay.
I'm straight, though!
Oh, boy I'm straight! Look how straight I am!
I am aware now that there are gay people, but I am straight.

I like La Villa Strangiato. It's better than anything from Test for Blecho.

subby here.
whoa....dude...why all the negativity?
i can kinda see why some people don't like Geddy's voice [it took me a bit to get used to, especially the 70's stuff], but you can't deny they are three freaking awesome wicked musicians... and their live sound is HUGE for just three musicians**...
Peart's lyrics aren't bad, either...

** it seems like they use a few backing tracks [when playing live] for a few synth parts when Geddy's hands and feet are already busy...lolz
[saw them last night]

Ya know, Alex Lifeson is a very very good guitar player..
His problem is that he plays with Lee and Pert.

I'll never understand why the haters have to take the time from their self important lives to let the rest of us know how they feel about bands they don't like.

We don't care. Neither does the band.

As for the song, it's a dumb video - like most from Rush, yet a great piece of music - like most from Rush.

Can't wait to see them next weekend in the northwest!

And even if you don't like Rush, you have to appreciate the fact that there's only three of them making all that noise.

hmmm. quite true.
although, "welcome back..." has poor soundquality, kinda thin, echoey, distant... as if recorded from a balcony... lolz.
but who can resist a live three record set from ELP?
ELP are great musicians as well.... [ie. Emerson and Palmer]
Lake? not so much... he's a good bassist and guitarist, but not great... he has a wonderful voice, tho... the "choir boy" of prog. rock.

Am i the only Rush fan who thinks that
a)"La Villa..." is too short, even at almost 10 minutes? I wish it could've be like 15 or so...

b) "hemispheres" is their greatest/best 70's album?

c) doesn't like most of "permanent waves"? [besides "freewill" and "Spirit".]... the rest of it is okay.. on the whole...

d) "Caress of Steel" is kinda underrated?

e) "Moving Pictures" is an incredibly good album? perhaps their best, even? or at least one of the top rock albums of the early 80s?

d) that Alex tends to put too many really fast notes/runs in his solos? i like "feeling" and "heart" more than "speed".

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-05-26 11:17:10 AM
e) Peart is the Tony Banks of the drums?

WaltzingMathilda [TotalFark] 2008-05-26 12:25:55 PM
The more drums you have in your kit, the better you are at the drums.

Third_Uncle_Eno: comments about RUSH stuff

Perhaps I'm a 'standard' RUSH fan, but I've always like 2112 ("Tears" is not a good song though, but "Lessons" is one of my favorites).

I LOVE Permanent Waves -- "Different Strings" is one my absolute favorite RUSH songs. And good evidence that Alex can play with great feeling... the outro solo is great -- way too short though).

I agree with about Moving Pictures -- it's quite a good album. Not their best, though. I'd have to go with Permanent Waves --- but I really like most of Power Windows and Hold YOur Fire, perhaps because those were the first RUSH albums I got into.

The only songs I can really get into off Caress of Steel are "Bastille Day" and "I THink I'm goin Bald."

Tony Banks of drums? I'm not all that familiar with older Genesis stuff ... I have the Platinum Collection --- just checked out a few of the older tracks again ... yeah, Banks is a busy-boarder on "the knife". I can see what ur saying ....

Tony Banks of drums?
yup.... sorry.. i shoulda been more specific...
[i kinda meant that Tony never cracks a smile or anything in any live performance i've seen them in on tv/dvd/youtube....so unwavering and stoic same with Neil... i've never seen him smile or anything either... as in: they're both so robotic..lolz]

and / or it could mean that they're both great [technically / classically] at their respective instruments...

I tend to not include sound quality in my opinion of an album. All that aside, ELP are great musicians who have not made a whole lot of great music.

I was simply making the point (general, not to you specifically) that talented musicians do not make good music automatically. There are a TON of very solid technical musicians out there. It's the ones who take that technical skill and try to do something with it.

Rush fit into that mould of talent + trying to accomplish something. Maybe like...say... Henry Cow, but we can't all be geniuses :)

More than anything though, I get pissed when Rush fans think of the band as some pillar of technicality.

Rush is good when they write good songs. They suck when they write bad songs, which is very frequent. LVS is good but sounds better in my head.

Thoughts on one of the most maddeningly inconsistent bands I know (new window)

I used to be impressed by that fact until I found out Dethklok was only two people (in the studio at least). Much bigger noise to people ratio there. Brendon Small has the bone structure and chi flow of a kung-fu heavy metal genius!

/still like Rush though

I love their live versions - what a great video. Check out Working Man and Finding My Way if you like their old stuff (pre-NP). They just got better and better, I liked them all the way through Presto but now I can't really get into their newer stuff. By the way, I'm one of those who think NP is probably the best percussionist ever, at least in the top 3 or 4 especially if you throw in the fantastic songwriting.

gbowles 2008-05-28 10:00:30 PM
Rush is 3 of the best rock musicians of all time. and the only rock band to keep the same lineup throughout a 30+ year career despite lots of drama for the drummer. and their lyrics rule. what more do ya need, haters? name one band that can even touch that (except maybe the melvins)
