I don't get it. If they sent a film crew so we can watch live why did they have to send the robot? Can't the idiots with cameras just pick up some dirt and bring it back?

seventypercent [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 07:38:56 PM
Not quite yet.

Wow, my very first chance to be filtpwned into saying "boobies". Good thing I'm not one of those kinds of trolls.

Though I will say, as the webmaster and a PR person for The Mars Society, I'll definitely be getting a kick out of these replies...and hopefully a safe landing.

clown-penis.fart 2008-05-25 07:40:28 PM
About 18 minutes to landing...

On a completely unrelated note, my Boobies! on Fark was in this thread regarding the Genesis space probe:

I was there for that and I'm here for this. If this one fails, it's all on me.

I have it on now, and there are NASA dudes doing victory handshakes and high-fives and poses, but everyone seems dang busy and the voice is saying two minutes to something.

Oh~! They put up a spiffy NASA graphic. 11 mins to touchdown. 3:30ish until entry. Neat.

Seven minutes of terror is what I call the night I lost my virginity.

Like the Phoenix I rise
From the ashes of life
I don't need fortune or fame
Just some peace of mind

Like the Phoenix I fly
Leaving the lies behind
Future's golden for me
There is no one who can stop me now

i was 15 when the vikings landed. i remember they at first thought the photos showed a blue sky.

considering how much technology has come in 30 years and we're still nervous about actually landing without crashing, it's stunning we successfully landed two vikings on mars so many years ago.

Watching now! Prove religion wrong!

Go Go Go!

Love it! Watching live is exciting. Fark the news not showing anything!

DD0 [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 07:45:55 PM
Does it move? Or will the lander just be stationary?

From everything I've seen it looks like no movey.

FTA:
"In the ideal scenario, "we evolve out of this cocoon and spread our wings and we turn into this beautiful butterfly on the surface," said Ed Sedivy, program manager at Lockheed Martin Corp."

Unless of course said cocoon hits the ground at several km/s. In which case the metaphorical bug guts will be naught but another smear on the windshield of the martian landscape.

/hope it makes it though, don't get me wrong

It is...but I'm not surprised we're still nervous about landing them safely. After all, hitting a moving target many, many millions of miles away with no human interaction is a hell of an engineering feat.
