It's white, with red stripes. It looks like a big Tylenol.

How the hell do you break a 747 in half on the grou.......wait a sec....Kalitta Air? Those guys would find a way.

The way in which you are doing it, I am pretty sure it's wrong.

I once bought bread from a man from Brussels.

Man, that sucks.

On the bright side, this means no brussel sprouts, right?

Now there's your problem!

Mr Vermeiren, who was coordinating the emergency effort, said the Boeing had come to a halt at the end of a runway, near houses and a cemetery.

He also later said that there were bodies everywhere & that recovery efforts could take months as the plane's impact buried some victims...

I'm trying to figure out what is interesting about this story. It wasn't passenger plane or anything... ???

scottydoesntknow [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-05-25 02:22:49 PM
Very misleading subby...I was expecting to see a video of the takeoff and resulting breakup, not just a video of firefighters spraying a non-existent fire. Pics would have worked fine there.

FTFA: 'Speaking to Belgian radio station VRT, he said the pilot had told rescue authorities of hearing a "large noise" while trying to take off.'

Yeah, I BET he did!

Same here. I imagine the media folks are pretty upset there is no video of that too.

The fact that a plane that is still widely used just "broke in half"? Many of us are concerned that our planes remain in one piece...at least until we get in the air.

That was probably his explosive bowel discharge on missing the takeoff. Maybe the black box recorders can tell us more.

No shiat? That might have been the back half of your plane breaking off...

Odds are they didn't distribute the weight properly, shoved most of it in the back, and put too much stress on the center part of the plane. At least that's my guess from when my pilot friend explained weights in planes.

SenOrtega 2008-05-25 02:31:21 PM
Yeah...I'm pretty sure their not supposed to do that. I mean how the hell do you even begin to do that the 747 can carry the space shuttle on its back.

Était-il peut-être un magicien? (Nouvelle fenêtre).

Boomhauer 2008-05-25 02:32:05 PM
This is exactly what happens when politics instead of safety dictate which runway the pilots are forced to use. Morons build houses near airports that have been there for decades, then biatch about the noise. This is exactly what happened in Brussels, and why the 747 used the shorter runway. Idiots... (the people and the politicians, not the pilots)

I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I have to agree. Same thing happened with the Canadian helicopter crash just recently. It exploded in the middle of the suburbs and, of course, the only photos available were of firemen spraying what little wreckage remained.

I got pulled over one time because my car matched the description of a wanted gang leader. Yeah, apparently gang leaders drive '97 Honda Civic hatchbacks.

I remember it specifically because it was right around Christmas time and he asked me if I had any automatic weapons in the glove box.

/WTF?
//when he let me go I felt like I had gotten away with something

Haha, wrong thread! Don't blame me, volume level 11 is disorienting!

You're not sick, you're human. It's like when there's a wreck on one side of a highway (let's say going northbound), and as usual the southbound side will be slow as hell too. Not because of a wreck, but because people will slow down to see the "carnage" whether or not it's there. Even people who are grossed out by the slightest sight of blood/injuries will turn their head. I'm just upset I was misled into believing that there would be a crazy video.

This company flies out of Willow Run airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan, about 20 minutes away from me.

Speaking of wrong threads, how about this one from the same page as the plane crash. Where's Winston Churchill when he's needed?

Jumbo jet triFAILta in play!

So, who fails harder:
--Crew that wrecks a brand new, first-off-the-production-line aircraft by overriding a safety feature
or
--Crew that wrecks an airframe of a model that's been around for decades, reasons not yet figured out?

strathmeyer 2008-05-25 02:55:17 PM
Ishidan: So, who fails harder:

Indeed, next thing you know crazy people are going to call pilots who land malfunctioning airplanes "heroes".

Bolo Jungle [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 02:56:45 PM
I had to work in Hopewell for a year and that thing was always landing right on top of me as I passed Newark Airport on my way home. I think there may be a couple in their fleet (probably mentioned that in the article - but I have the retention of a GNAT!). They park that beast on the edge of EWR when its not in use. It became a running joke with my girlfriend, as though they waited for me to pass before landing it. Threat Level Fuscia. It always looked like it was about to fall apart - one of the nastiest non-Soviet planes I've ever seen - and now, somehow, I feel entitled to at least a MILD 'I Told You So!'.

Laz Long [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 03:01:14 PM
So the front fell off? That's not very typical.

Ranger677 [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 03:01:43 PM
So are they going to pull all the 747's out of service now until they figure out what caused it? After all, that is what happened with the Concorde.

fredbox 2008-05-25 03:05:12 PM
OH SNAP!

/christ, I gotta do everything around here?

fredbox 2008-05-25 03:07:41 PM
bongmiester: just slightly overloaded

dear god, that's a 100.... how many of those are still airworthy, anwyay?

Friend of mine once worked for UPS in Anchorage, one of their regular visitors was 747-100 serial number 7... named Christine.

She was grounded once a month due to leaky hydraulics... ya rly.

darrent83: So how long till someone gets a photo of it breaking up and makes a fail pic out of it?

Fine.

One less than yesterday.

/in gallows humor mood
//electrician came round to the building yesterday. I told him he picked a good job, if he screws up at least he'll die instantly
///he thought I was a sicko until I explained I spend my day biatching out HAZMAT workers removing lead and asbestos...those are insidious bastards, no immediate effects at all, so sloppy work looks like it's rewarded...until the heavy metal poisoning or cancer sets in 20 years later

syndre 2008-05-25 03:17:34 PM
damn you subby
I was all excited to see a video of a 747 crashing... with people inside of it.

Thanks for nothing

bunner [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 03:29:19 PM
I think that I can say, without fear of retraction, that large vehicles made out of metal, and go very fast, ought to be subjected to intense maintenance schedules.

bunner [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 03:30:43 PM
AND that go very fast.

Dang old typing school, tell ya whut.

zz9 2008-05-25 03:32:59 PM
I dare say the crew are glad it broke up on the ground rather than at thirty thousand feet. You can play with the houses lever* all you want, without ailerons and a rudder you're going down.

*Houses Lever: Push lever forward, houses get bigger. Pull lever back, houses get smaller.

cedarpark 2008-05-25 03:33:37 PM
That makes two 373.5 airplanes, doesn't it?
