I have had contact with an owl, so I'm really getting a kick out of... absolutely nothing.

I'm glad the other owl that holds the current record was found freshly dead instead of not so freshly dead. Keeps things much more accurate. I can rest easy tonight.

Hey, my boy wants to be a zookeeper. What kind of education is required?? He's looking at going to A&M for a degree... (he's only 9, so we have time)

Earpj:

Generally, for any kind of serious and financially rewarding position, at least a bachelor's degree is a desired asset. It all really depends on the place of employment and the position. Anything from a degree in general biology to zoology, marine biology, animal care specialization, animal training, etc. is acceptable.

To be perfectly honest, I don't have a degree (though I am currently going to school) and fell into this job out of pure good luck. In a case like mine, if I stay where I am for long enough and just get the hands-on experience for a few years, I can move on to a much larger establishment like the Bronx Zoo or something similar. You would be surprised how many people just learned on the job and stuck with it their whole lives.

I live in New Jersey, and there are no schools with zoology undergrad majors anywhere in the area. University of South Florida and University of Michigan have great programs.

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Otherwise, best of luck to your boy. If he loves animals, there is no better job out there. I love going to work everyday.

Inazuma Cool. Thanks. We have too many pets, really. Mostly b/c of the boy and his 12 yr. old sister (who wants to be a Vet). He loves lizards, but mainly wants to work with the big cats and such. ?? I don't even know if it's possible to specialize in any one area.

/He's also expressed an interest in going to Africa to study them.

It is possible to specialize in a specific area - for instance, a herpetologist is someone who specializes in reptiles. However, to my knowledge there is no special title for someone who works solely with big cats. In most establishments, a keeper never comes into free contact with a big cat. This is not always the case, though, and there are places that specialize in big cats such as Big cat Rescue (new window).

I thought the headline said "tranny owl," and now I want to see some tranny owl pics, dammit. Come on, you know you've got them.

My little brother wanted to be a herpetologist when we were young. He even wanted to go to Australia and work with Steve Irwin. He wrote e to Irwin once and even got a letter back but I think it got lost.

He ended up joining the air force. (His first dream ever was to be a fighter pilot.) I hope once he retires from the air force he will again pursue his dream of being a herpetologist. He has a gift with reptiles.
