That's because you're pronouncing it wrong. They're candy-inns. The second A is silent.

I mean, who doesn't like candy? And an inn made out of candy? Well that's even better.

I can't recall anyone drinking any of these recently. There are too many other, better, similarly priced options. Why would you drink this when all you have to do is go to the corner store and buy a six pack of something else? Say, McAuslan?

I miss living in Montreal, only for the summers. Beer festival rules.

Although now that I am back in BC, I have discovered there are better, locally made (drinking without eco-guilt at importing a beer? Awesome!) Hefeweizen options than in Quebec. But not too many places have McAuslan on tap. A tragedy.

Considering most Canadians are delusional enough to think they "won" the war of 1812, I'm not exactly surprised you are intentionally ignoring your country's own shiatty beer.

Canadians: just as arrogant as Americans but seven levels higher in stupid.

Nah, Canadians are nice people. They'll put out the flames with Budweiser. That's about all it's good for, eh?

To be fair, the only ones stupid enough to drink shiatty Canadian beer are Americans. In no small part because they're the only ones in the world with worse beer.

Noooooooo!

Granville Island brewery is not good! It's driving me nuts that everyone in Vancouver has them on tap and not better beers!

I had their lager yesterday and it wasn't even decent, although it was better than some of the GI beers I've tried.

I'm still figuring out the local brewing scene in BC but so far, I've concluded that Nelson Brewing beers much more drinkable for the more-available microbrews. After Dark (dark style ale) and the Paddywhack IPA were pretty good.

Hang on, I should note that Granville Island brewing is generally about a 5 on a 1-10 scale, while Molson etc. are about a 2 (will get you drunk eventually, but not good for anything else.)

I could take or leave any of their other beers but the GI Maple Cream Ale is heavenly (in the keg or out of a can only, for some reason it loses it's mouthfeel when it's in a bottle.)

Wish I could get it in Calgary, they can't make enough to ship it here.

Chambly makes good toilet bowl cleaner. Shake and spray around the edges.
All beers are so overpriced in Canada to begin with, so why bother.

Haven't yet, and it's on my list. I'll thank you now because who knows when we'll have another Canadian beer thread?

I suggest: Kawartha Lakes raspberry wheat, in Ontario. I'm normally really picky about fruit beers, but that one is really good.

Malbar: You can only buy beer at government run or private monopolies protected by the government in most of Canada. This alone completely destroys any chance of Canada ever having any international beer prestige.

Not the case in Alberta or BC! One sweet day Ontario will follow.

This is actually not true. In most provinces, you do not have to shop exclusively at the liquor stores run by the province (they do a good job normally, too) to get wine and beer. Vodka yeah, wine and beer, no.

In Alberta and Quebec you can get wine and beer in grocery stores, in Quebec even in corner stores, which I suspect get the bulk of beer sales. In BC there are very good specialty wine and beer stores that are privately run. In Ontario there are beer-specific stores as well as the LCBO. I don't know about the rest of the provinces, but I've already covered the bulk of the Canadian population.

Also there's benefits to having giant liquor stores. They have really good websites that tell you, province-wide, what their stock is. So if you're looking for something rare you can find out where you can get it in three clicks... or order it online.

Ok everyone. At least for this thread, can we all put our differences aside?

At no other time in human history have we had so many great brews available to us. The US makes some unbelievably great beer (favorite - Hop Devil) and so does Canada (favorite - St. Ambroise Pale).

Neither country has a monopoly on cretins sucking down tasteless lagers. :)

Both have great brewpubs and microbrews.

So drink to that!

I went to this Beer festival a few times, i'm meh about it.

You got to buy these tickets for $1.00 CND ($1.01 USD / 0.64 € /0.51 £)that are then traded in for samples of the differnt beers. Samples are about 3-5 oz. and cost from 2 to 5 tickets per sample.

When I sample a beer, I want to sample a pint of it. So if I bring a pint glass for them to fill, it could cost me $20 (5 oz. for 5 tickets x 4).

There's no such thing as semen tasting. At least not in the way there's wine tasting and beer tasting.

These threads always devolve into a Springfield vs. Shelbyville vibe.

nightfire: Neither country has a monopoly on cretins sucking down tasteless lagers. :)

Yup, and neither has a monopoly on the elitists who think they somehow have a vastly superior product to anything else on the earth.

When I travel down south and into the east, I love tasting the differences in the regional hops and barleys used in the local microbrews. I'm also OCD when it comes to collecting bottles.... anyone have a Monty Python's Holy Grail they'd care to send me?:)

theFword 2008-05-25 04:35:52 PM
Rules in Quebec for alcohol sales:

Spirits and wines are sold only in government run liquor stores (SAQ).

Beers and some wines (cheaper stuff, I think under $12 bottles) are sold just about anywhere else (gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores, SAQs). These stores can even delivery the beer/wine to your house (the liquor stores don't deliver). Beer can only be sold between 8AM and 11PM, and sold only to adults 18+

Is it true that some states/provinces you can buy cases of beer from bars to bring home? Was at a bar a few weeks ago and some tourists wanted to buy a case of beer at last call to bring back to thier hotel room, and when told that bars can't sell unopened cases to patrons, they were all like back home we do.

Oh, and megabrews everywhere are capable of crafting fine beers, but they become megabrews because they excel at the cost effective creation of "inoffensive" beers (using terms like "crisp" and "clean" .. ugh).

But take Labatt Porter. It's actually quite an interesting beer. And, from the same people who brought you Labatt Ice ... a "dubious acheivement," in the words of Michael Jackson (the beer guy).

Most people want a fizzy drink that will get them drunk. They're all over the world. Look at Heinecken, Stella, Bud, Blue, Sapporo, Fosters... All largely successful beers.

But virtually every country also has at least a handful of excellent breweries that cater to real beer lovers.
