People can read and write in SC?

Whenever I'm behind an SUV driving somewhat erratically, it's nearly always some biatch on or looking at a cell phone. :(

Whatever you have to say, it can wait ten minutes. Jesus.

AnnoyingKidNextDoor 2008-05-25 10:32:08 AM
Using a cell phone while driving should result in an automatic suspension of your driving license. No exceptions.

Forget drugs and alcohol. Cell phones are the dangerous addiction in this country!

Yeah but like that. They were doing that before texting was even thought of.

Umm... could someone please translate that... i don't understand the "Sc#1" part.

This has already been illegal in the Nanny State for quite some time now. Oh yeah, and you can't talk on the phone either (unless it's hands-free), because they have this ridiculous legal requirement of having to have your hands free to drive. Shows what a bastion of liberty the USA is, unlike the oppressive Big Brother in England.

Wait, what?

Are you kidding me? How many states do you know with SC as an Abbr? And Charleston.net? You don't even have to read the article to figure that one out.

haddie: Never type like that again, please.

I made fun of someone in an online game for using txtspch and got kicked because the jackasses running the server felt I was making fun of foreigners.

The foreigners I know would never use txtspch. There's a yawning chasm of stupidity between simply misspelling words and using txtspch.

bronyaur1 [TotalFark] 2008-05-25 10:42:56 AM
It seems to me that texting is a whole next level of inattention to driving relative to talking on the phone.

/The MOST distracted drivers are moms with kids.

I am sure that you never read the incoming texts or respond to those while driving either, because you can't do that while not looking.

What, no hate for the company trying to sell special software that can translate voice into text to send over your phone to someone else's phone? Just f*cking CALL THEM, that's what phones are for!

Have you ever driven here? You need both hands, the streets are about 1 1/2 lanes wide-for two lane roads.

That being said, I'm against the £90 tickets you get if caught.
Execution by the roadside is much more efficient and solves the problem permanently.

There are already laws that cover driving dangerously, so why do we need another one? Maybe subby just wants an acceptable reason to hate the socioeconomic population most likely to be found texting while driving.

As the uncle of a teenager who would probably have echoed your sentiment please be realistic about this. You do have to look down every once in a while and just the texting takes you mind off of the road whether your looking at the phone or not. My neice Kim's concentration was on texting and she went wide on a curve, overcorrected and hit a field approach ending up at the bottom of a ravine. They figure that her neck snapped on impact so she didn't suffer much. Driving is your job when you are behind the wheel. Concentrate on that job and leave other things for later. I've never had a phone conversation that would compensate for even a minor fender bender.

The company, Vlingo, sells software that it says can translate voice to text on a cell phone, eliminating the need to tap out a message. It hired a firm that tallied 4,820 responses to a "self-administered" online survey.

UUUUHHHH Just call & have a conversation. Yeah, I know, it's a lost art. Revive it!

Great. I'm stuck in this hell hole for the weekend and now I find I'm more likely to get killed by some soccer mom driving her H3 while texting. farkin' great.

Kevin72 2008-05-25 11:08:16 AM
I'm not surprised that the #1 state is an Eastern one. A year ago, when I first started reading FARK, I read about fatalities from texting and driving, and wrote a blog entry about it. The California college-aged kids that replied basically asked "Are they nuts? Of course it's stupid to text and drive".

milk_plus 2008-05-25 11:10:29 AM
What we need is voice activated text messaging. The phone takes what people say, turns it into tard speak, and translates it back to speech on the other phone. This would make texting just about as a normal call while driving.

The phone company can implement this by just treating it like a normal call, running it through a filter to make it sound like a robot, and charging 3x as much for the call.

McKeesport Beer Baron 2008-05-25 11:14:37 AM
And people around here drive bad enough to begin with. I think turn signals are optional equipment on cars sold in this state..And no one understands what lane to stay in when making a turn...And you can drive at 15 here...etc...etc...

Yes some of the high end cars do. But they are expensive phone calls. My father's Acura has one, but he never uses it.

Case in point: Another teenage driver that thinks they "got it under control". What was that? 16-21 drivers have highest accident & death rate...?
